Logistics real estate markets: indicators of structural change, linking land use and freight transport
The system of physical distribution that comprises transport and logistics, warehousing and wholesale, is an ideal indicator of structural change. Distribution and logistics have developed dynamically, with respect to new technologies, corporate restructuring, and a changing market environment. Whereas traditional logistics were characterized primarily by the demand of manufacturing customers for the shipment of bulk-commodities, modern production and service systems require frequent deliveries over great distances, with high inventory turnovers instead of storage. As a consequence, the locational profiles of distribution firms have changed as well, both at a large-scale level and within metropolitan regions. Based on recent findings of the European Warehousing Index, the paper points out how the European system of goods movement has changed in terms of regional distribution markets and warehousing location. Secondly, the consequences of locational dynamics within metropolitan regions are considered. The dominance of the truck and the suburbanisation of large distribution centres raise serious concern about logistics management, traffic reduction and locational policy. Referring to selected places such as the Ruhr Area, Hamburg or Berlin-Brandenburg, the paper demonstrates how critical the relationship between cities and goods distribution is becoming, with regard both to the regional economy and the urban environment. Is there a chance for regional, spatially oriented management of supply chains? In the case of the Ruhr Area, it is also questioned whether a certain 'knowledge milieu' (logistics research, applied sciences) may contribute to this goal. The particular benefits of investigating logistics real estate markets are fourfold: - They allow for a precise insight into regionally differentiated developments. - They connect the system of 'flows' with material 'space'. - They demonstrate that structural change is by no means neutral for the environment, regarding specific transport and land use implications of distribution. - They represent the emergence of new players in land use planning and policy (i.e. developers), thus shaping the system of political regulation.

marketing channels, is increasingly being recognised as a vital part of an organisation’s marketing strategy.
In many organisations, the logistics function is currently facing significant challenges. Pressures from
increasing competition and high customer service-level expectations have created a need for more
professional and better-equipped logistics services. Confronted with such competitive pressures, these
organisations are faced with decisions of the make OR buy kind with regard to the logistics processes of supply and distribution. In addition, the emergence of a need to focus on core capabilities has led many organisations to contract out all, or part of, the logistics function to third-party providers.

Analysis and optimization of distribution logistics for Just Water Company
This report details the various factors that affect the operational efficiency of distribution logistics. The research aimed at studying the existing components involved in the distribution logistics of Just Water. Distribution logistics begins at the end of the production line where the finished product is emerged until it reaches the
customers. The literature review explains the key components of distribution logistics in an organisation. This research analyses the existing components of the distribution logistics of Just Water and discusses possible improvements that can be adapted to increase the overall efficiency of the distribution logistics operation.
The background of the research is that Just Water faces difficulty with delivering its products on time during peak seasons. The research tries to unveil the reason for this delay and finds that the demands for extra water-out deliveries are interfering with the normal runs of the trucks, therein delaying their regular schedule. One another cause was found to be the shortage of supplies due to slow or less return logistics. The research suggests a change in the existing drop shipping distribution model and recommends the adaptation of intermediary or multi-stage distribution networks, possibly the ‘Last Mile Delivery’ configuration in order to reduce delivery lead-time, reduce transportation costs and improve customer satisfaction
The changing market for distribution: implications for Exel Logistics
This paper has been written to compliment a previous Working Paper (The Evolution of a
Distribution Brand: The Case of Exel Logistics) and to some extent allows that company’s
development (1989- 1993) to be placed in the context of marketplace and industry changes. I
wish to examine three of the main trends affecting the distribution industry over the same
period. Firstly, the move towards the centralisation of operations by both manufacturers and
retailers, secondly at the debate surrounding contracting-out and in-house distribution
activities and finally, the issues under consideration must be seen in a wider context - that
of distribution and the Single European Market (SEM), which could be said to be the most
important development facing the distribution industry for many years. These trends will be
discussed in some detail and, where appropriate, from Exel Logistics’ perspective in order to
consider how far the company has gone both in dealing with marketplace changes and in

Distribution planning in a weather-dependent scenario with stochastic travel times: a simheuristics approach
In real-life logistics, distribution plans might be affected by weather conditions (rain, snow, and fog), since they might have a significant effect on traveling times and, therefore, on total distribution costs. In this paper, the distribution problem is modeled as a multi-depot vehicle routing problem with stochastic traveling times. These traveling times are not only stochastic in nature but the specific probability distribution used to model them depends on the particular weather conditions on the delivery day. In order to solve the aforementioned problem, a simheuristic approach combining simulation within a biased-randomized heuristic framework is proposed. As the computational experiments will show, our simulation-optimization algorithm is able to provide high-quality solutions to this NP-hard problem in short computing times even for large-scale instances. Marketing and logistic support of Ukrainian regional markets for innovative products distribution
The integrated assessment of marketing support and level of logistics potential of Ukrainian regional markets according to the proposed structure is carried out. The study was carried out by determining the essence of marketing resources and logistics potential of regions that, as a result, reflects their focus on the formation of an effective policy of distribution of innovative products of industrial enterprises. A matrix that reflects the grouping of Ukrainian regions in zones with balanced and unbalanced levels of appraisal indicators is provided
A development of logistics management models for the Space Transportation System
A new analytic queueing approach was described which relates stockage levels, repair level decisions, and the project network schedule of prelaunch operations directly to the probability distribution of the space transportation system launch delay. Finite source population and limited repair capability were additional factors included in this logistics management model developed specifically for STS maintenance requirements. Data presently available to support logistics decisions were based on a comparability study of heavy aircraft components. A two-phase program is recommended by which NASA would implement an integrated data collection system, assemble logistics data from previous STS flights, revise extant logistics planning and resource requirement parameters using Bayes-Lin techniques, and adjust for uncertainty surrounding logistics systems performance parameters. The implementation of these recommendations can be expected to deliver more cost-effective logistics support
End consumer goods movement generation in French medium urban areas
End-consumer movements, defined as the movements made by the consumer transporting the purchased goods, are identified with shopping trips. Whereas the logistics movements (freight distribution and urban part of the supply chain) are well studied in city logistics and urban planning, the end-consumer movements are usually related only to people movements. This paper presents a new modelling approach to characterise the shopping trips within a city logistics point of view, in order to connect these movements with those belonging to urban freight distribution in the supply chain. We present a trip generation model built from the data of recent household trip surveys, more precisely for the urban community of Lyon (France). Chemical industry supply chain optimisation using agent-based modelling
In this paper we present an application of Supply Chain Spread Sheet Simulator (SCSS) in a task dealing with chemical industry supply chain redesign and optimisation. SCSS uses principles of Agent-Based Modelling combining 4 types of agents with 3 algorithms to control their behaviour. Location Algorithm is used to place the logistics objects satisfying the demand of customers, Clarke&Wright's Savings Algorithm is applied to plan the routes and Past Stock Movement Simulation is used to control the stock levels. SCSS is developed in MS Excel using programming language Visual Basic for Applications. Its basic functionality is discussed simulating a real task dealing with the redesign of the distribution system for goods coming from chemical industry in the Czech Republic. We test 6 different structures of the distribution system differing in number of located logistics objects ranging from 1 to 6. Based on the outputs of SCSS recalculated to distribution costs we suggest decreasing the number of located warehouses from 6 to 1 estimating almost 33 % distribution costs savings per year
Sustainable supply chain management in city logistics solutions: an experience's comeback from Cityporto Padua (Italy)
The sustainable logistics and transportation studies constitute a primordial research axis in the enterprises' governance. In the last years, many reflections and developments in logistics research have studied the economic and the environmental questions related to supply chain management, but only few of them consider sustainability in its totality. Moreover, in practice, city logistics systems conception and planning is currently following a sustainable approach.
