Robust MMSE Precoding Strategy for Multiuser MIMO Relay Systems with Switched Relaying and Side Information
In this work, we propose a minimum mean squared error (MMSE) robust base station (BS) precoding strategy based on switched relaying (SR) processing and limited transmission of side information for interference suppression in the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. The BS and the MIMO relay station (RS) are both equipped with a codebook of interleaving matrices. For a given channel state information (CSI) the selection function at the BS chooses the optimum interleaving matrix from the codebook based on two optimization criteria to design the robust precoder. Prior to the payload transmission the BS sends the index corresponding to the selected interleaving matrix to the RS, where the best interleaving matrix is selected to build the optimum relay processing matrix. The entries of the codebook are randomly generated unitary matrices. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed techniques is significantly better than prior art in the case of imperfect CSI.
Joint Source and Relay Optimization for Two-Way MIMO Multi-Relay Networks
In this letter, we study two-way nonregenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communications with multiple relay nodes. An iterative algorithm is developed to jointly optimize the source, relay, and receive matrices such that the two-way sum mean-squared error (MSE) of the signal waveform estimation is minimized. Numerical examples demonstrate a better performance of the proposed algorithm compared with existing algorithms for two-way MIMO multi-relay networks
Hybrid Transceiver Optimization for Multi-Hop Communications
Multi-hop communication with the aid of large-scale antenna arrays will play
a vital role in future emergence communication systems. In this paper, we
investigate amplify-and-forward based and multiple-input multiple-output
assisted multi-hop communication, in which all nodes employ hybrid
transceivers. Moreover, channel errors are taken into account in our hybrid
transceiver design. Based on the matrix-monotonic optimization framework, the
optimal structures of the robust hybrid transceivers are derived. By utilizing
these optimal structures, the optimizations of analog transceivers and digital
transceivers can be separated without loss of optimality. This fact greatly
simplifies the joint optimization of analog and digital transceivers. Since the
optimization of analog transceivers under unit-modulus constraints is
non-convex, a projection type algorithm is proposed for analog transceiver
optimization to overcome this difficulty. Based on the derived analog
transceivers, the optimal digital transceivers can then be derived using
matrix-monotonic optimization. Numeral results obtained demonstrate the
performance advantages of the proposed hybrid transceiver designs over other
existing solutions.Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures. This manuscript has been submitted to IEEE

A General Robust Linear Transceiver Design for Multi-Hop Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relaying Systems
In this paper, linear transceiver design for multi-hop amplify-and-forward
(AF) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) relaying systems with Gaussian
distributed channel estimation errors is investigated. Commonly used
transceiver design criteria including weighted mean-square-error (MSE)
minimization, capacity maximization, worst-MSE/MAX-MSE minimization and
weighted sum-rate maximization, are considered and unified into a single
matrix-variate optimization problem. A general robust design algorithm is
proposed to solve the unified problem. Specifically, by exploiting majorization
theory and properties of matrix-variate functions, the optimal structure of the
robust transceiver is derived when either the covariance matrix of channel
estimation errors seen from the transmitter side or the corresponding
covariance matrix seen from the receiver side is proportional to an identity
matrix. Based on the optimal structure, the original transceiver design
problems are reduced to much simpler problems with only scalar variables whose
solutions are readily obtained by iterative water-filling algorithm. A number
of existing transceiver design algorithms are found to be special cases of the
proposed solution. The differences between our work and the existing related
work are also discussed in detail. The performance advantages of the proposed
robust designs are demonstrated by simulation results.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, Accepted by IEEE Transactions on Signal

Layered Capacity-Based Relay-and-Antenna Joint Selection for MIMO-AF-Multiple-Relay Systems in Correlated Channels
A computationally efficient two-stage greedy capacity maximization (GCM) relay-and-antenna joint selection is proposed for a dual-hop nonregenerative amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-relay system with multiple antennas equipped at each node in correlated fading channels. This modified GCM (MGCM) antenna selection strategy selects a subset of antenna pairs from available relays based on the concept of channel capacity maximization subject to an optimal power allocation constraint across the activated antenna pairs. In order to reduce system hardware complexity, antenna selection schemes are performed at the destination node as well. Finally, simulations are conducted to compare the channel capacity of the proposed two-layered antenna selection technique with other existing antenna selection algorithms for half-duplex AF-MIMO multiple-relay systems
A Tutorial on the Optimization of Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relay Systems
The remarkable promise of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channels has motivated an intense research activity to characterize the theoretical and practical issues associated with the design of transmit (source) and receive (destination) processing matrices under different operating conditions. This activity was primarily focused on point-to-point (single-hop) communications but more recently there has been an extensive work on two-hop or multi-hop settings in which single or multiple relays are used to deliver the information from the source to the destination. The aim of this tutorial is to provide an up-to-date overview of the fundamental results and practical implementation issues of designing amplify-and-forward MIMO relay systems
Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding Based Transceiver Design for MIMO Relay Systems With Channel Covariance Information
In this paper, we investigate the performance of the Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoder based nonlinear transceiver design for a nonregenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system assuming that the full channel state information (CSI) of the source-relay link is known, while only the channel covariance information (CCI) of the relay-destination link is available at the relay node. We first derive the structure of the optimal TH precoding matrix and the source precoding matrix that minimize the mean-squared error (MSE) of the signal waveform estimation at the destination. Then we develop an iterative algorithm to optimize the relay precoding matrix. To reduce the computational complexity of the iterative algorithm, we propose a simplified precoding matrices design scheme. Numerical results show that the proposed precoding matrices design schemes have a better bit-error-rate performance than existing algorithms
