Handwritten Chinese character recognition using spatial Gabor filters and self-organizing feature maps

So far the bottleneck of Chinese recognition, especially handwritten recognition, still lies in the effectiveness of feature-extraction to cater for various distortions and position shifting. In the paper, a novel method is proposed by applying a set of Gabor spatial filters with different directions and spatial frequencies to character images, in an effort to reach the optimum trade-off between feature stability and feature localization. While a classic self-organizing map is used for unsupervised clustering feature codes, a multi-staged LVQ with a fuzzy judgement unit is applied for the final recognition on the feature mapping result.published_or_final_versio

Unsupervised feature extraction using neuro-fuzzy approach

The present article demonstrates a way of formulating a neuro-fuzzy approach for feature extraction under unsupervised training. A fuzzy feature evaluation index for a set of features is newly defined in terms of degree of similarity between two patterns in both the original and transformed feature spaces. A concept of flexible membership function incorporating weighted distance is introduced for computing membership values in the transformed space that is obtained by a set of linear transformation on the original space. A layered network is designed for performing the task of minimization of the evaluation index through unsupervised learning process. This extracts a set of optimum transformed features, by projecting n-dimensional original space directly to n'-dimensional (n'<n) transformed space, along with their relative importance. The extracted features are found to provide better classification performance than the original ones for different real life data with dimensions 3, 4, 9, 18 and 34. The superiority of the method over principal component analysis network, nonlinear discriminant analysis network and Kohonen self-organizing feature map is also established

Neuro-fuzzy feature evaluation with theoretical analysis

    Get PDF
The article provides a fuzzy set theoretic feature evaluation index and a connectionist model for its evaluation along with their theoretical analysis. A concept of weighted membership function is introduced which makes the modeling of the class structures more appropriate. A neuro-fuzzy algorithm is developed for determining the optimum weighting coefficients representing the feature importance. It is shown theoretically that the evaluation index has a fixed upper bound and a varying lower bound, and it monotonically increases with the lower bound. A relation between the evaluation index, interclass distance and weighting coefficients is established. Effectiveness of the algorithms for evaluating features both individually and in a group (considering their independence and dependency) is demonstrated along with comparisons on speech, Iris, medical and mango-leaf data. The results are also validated using scatter diagram and k-NN classifier

Combining additive input noise annealing and pattern transformations for improved handwritten character recognition

Two problems that burden the learning process of Artificial Neural Networks with Back Propagation are the need of building a full and representative learning data set, and the avoidance of stalling in local minima. Both problems seem to be closely related when working with the handwritten digits contained in the MNIST dataset. Using a modest sized ANN, the proposed combination of input data transformations enables the achievement of a test error as low as 0.43%, which is up to standard compared to other more complex neural architectures like Convolutional or Deep Neural Networks. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
