    What is usability in the context of the digital library and how can it be measured?

    This paper reviews how usability has been defined in the context of the digital library, what methods have been applied and their applicability, and proposes an evaluation model and a suite of instruments for evaluating usability for academic digital libraries. The model examines effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction, and learnability. It is found that there exists an interlocking relationship among effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. It also examines how learnability interacts with these three attributes

    Cordylophora caspia is a colonial, athecate hydroid inhabiting both in freshwater and brackish habitats. Its global distribution is in part due to its ability to tolerate a wide range of salinity. It is considered an invasive species and its control is widely studied because of the industrial and ecological problems it causes in many environments. We report for the first time the occurrence of this hydrozoan in Nahuel Rucá Lake (Buenos Aires province, Argentina) with some notes on its internal and external morphology.Fil: Deserti, Maria Irene.     Disertační práce se zabývá lokalizací zdrojů zvuku a akustickým zoomem. Hlavním cílem této práce je navrhnout systém s akustickým zoomem, který přiblíží zvuk jednoho mluvčího mezi skupinou mluvčích, a to i když mluví současně. Tento systém je kompatibilní s technikou prostorového zvuku. Hlavní přínosy disertační práce jsou následující: 1. Návrh metody pro odhad více směrů přicházejícího zvuku. 2. Návrh metody pro akustické zoomování pomocí DirAC. 3. Návrh kombinovaného systému pomocí předchozích kroků, který může být použit v telekonferencích.This doctoral thesis deals with sound source localization and acoustic zooming. The primary goal of this dissertation is to design an acoustic zooming system, which can zoom the sound of one speaker among multiple speakers even when they speak simultaneously. The system is compatible with surround sound techniques. In particular, the main contributions of the doctoral thesis are as follows: 1. Design of a method for multiple sound directions estimations. 2. Proposing a method for acoustic zooming using DirAC. 3. Design a combined system using the previous mentioned steps, which can be used in teleconferencing.

    Strangles: The Molecular Identification and Epidemiology of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi

    A conventional PCR diagnostic test was established to confirm the microbiological isolation of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi (S. equi), the causative agent of strangles. This test was based on the amplification of the seeI gene, which is species-specific for S. equi. Further, a multiplex PCR was developed using species-specific primers; to identify the presence of S. equi and two other streptococci know complicate the diagnosis of strangles in horses, Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (S. zooepidemicus) and Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (S. equisimilis). A total of 18 clinical isolates of S. equi plus the Pinnacle IN vaccine isolate, two isolates of S. zooepidemicus and four isolates of S. equisimilis were obtained via culture and used in the development of the multiplex diagnostic tool. Two multiplex tests were trialed; a conventional multiplex PCR and a real-time multiplex PCR. Both the conventional and real-time multiplex PCR’s were able to distinguish between the streptococci and accurately identified all isolates. However, further testing on 26 field specimens revealed that the real-time multiplex PCR had lower specificity, sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy as compared to the conventional multiplex PCR. This was theorised to be the result of the PEG/KOH solution used in the DNA extraction, possibly interfering with the intercalating dye in the real-time reaction. Based on these preliminary results, the conventional multiplex PCR diagnostic test developed here is recommended for further trials to determine its robustness. The 19 S. equi isolates obtained, including the vaccine, were further subjected to epidemiological studies. These included sequencing of the variable N-terminal region of the antiphagocytic M-protein SeM to determine SeM allele subtypes and a Sau-PCR amplification method, which previously has not been trialled on S. equi isolates. Sau-PCR involves digestion of genomic DNA and subsequent amplification. Two novel strains of S. equi were found within NZ based on the variable region of the seM gene, SeM alleles 99 and 100. SeM allele 100 had a higher pervalance over allele 99 as it was isolated in 6 out of 9 outbreaks and was found to occur on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. SeM allele 99 was only found to occur on the North Island. Further to this study, the Pinnacle IN vaccine strain, SeM 2 was isolated from lymph node abcesses of two horses. It was unclear as to whether this ‘vaccine breakdown’ was just a severe adverse reaction to the vaccine or if the vaccine reverted to a more virulent type. The Sau-PCR was able to differentiate between the field isolates of S. equi and the vaccine strain but was unable to further differentiate between the field isolates and was therefore determined not as valuable for S. equi epidemiological studies

    Spina bifida, specifically myelomeningocele, is a debilitating neural tube defect that affects patients and families throughout the world. Traditional management and treatment methods are described, followed by an explanation of why this is often inadequate in providing care for those in impoverished areas of the world, including many regions of Africa. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy is proposed as a promising alternative to traditional methods for treating hydrocephalus, an often associated condition, and the implementation of this treatment method in Africa is explored. In order to relieve Africa of the burden of spina bifida-related hydrocephalus and improve global management of spina bifida, it is imperative that the paucity of neurosurgeons in Africa be addressed and successful models for training be expanded

    Waveguide physical modeling of vocal tract acoustics: flexible formant bandwidth control from increased model dimensionality

    Digital waveguide physical modeling is often used as an efficient representation of acoustical resonators such as the human vocal tract. Building on the basic one-dimensional (1-D) Kelly-Lochbaum tract model, various speech synthesis techniques demonstrate improvements to the wave scattering mechanisms in order to better approximate wave propagation in the complex vocal system. Some of these techniques are discussed in this paper, with particular reference to an alternative approach in the form of a two-dimensional waveguide mesh model. Emphasis is placed on its ability to produce vowel spectra similar to that which would be present in natural speech, and how it improves upon the 1-D model. Tract area function is accommodated as model width, rather than translated into acoustic impedance, and as such offers extra control as an additional bounding limit to the model. Results show that the two-dimensional (2-D) model introduces approximately linear control over formant bandwidths leading to attainable realistic values across a range of vowels. Similarly, the 2-D model allows for application of theoretical reflection values within the tract, which when applied to the 1-D model result in small formant bandwidths, and, hence, unnatural sounding synthesized vowels
