    Social networks offer vast potential for marketing agencies, as members freely provide private information, for instance on their current situation, opinions, tastes, and feelings. The use of social networks to feed into crime platforms has been acknowledged to build a kind of a virtual neighborhood watch. Current attempts that tried to automatically connect news from social networks with crime platforms have concentrated on documentation of past events, but neglected the opportunity to use Twitter data as a decision support system to detect future crimes. In this work, we attempt to unleash the wisdom of crowds materialized in tweets from Twitter. This requires to look at Tweets that have been sent within a vicinity of each other. Based on the aggregated Tweets traffic we correlate them with crime types. Apparently, crimes such as disturbing the peace or homicide exhibit different Tweet patterns before the crime has been committed. We show that these tweet patterns can strengthen the explanation of criminal activity in urban areas. On top of that, we go beyond pure explanatory approaches and use predictive analytics to provide evidence that Twitter data can improve the prediction of crimes

    Knowledge representation and text mining in biomedical, healthcare, and political domains

    Knowledge representation and text mining can be employed to discover new knowledge and develop services by using the massive amounts of text gathered by modern information systems. The applied methods should take into account the domain-specific nature of knowledge. This thesis explores knowledge representation and text mining in three application domains. Biomolecular events can be described very precisely and concisely with appropriate representation schemes. Protein–protein interactions are commonly modelled in biological databases as binary relationships, whereas the complex relationships used in text mining are rich in information. The experimental results of this thesis show that complex relationships can be reduced to binary relationships and that it is possible to reconstruct complex relationships from mixtures of linguistically similar relationships. This encourages the extraction of complex relationships from the scientific literature even if binary relationships are required by the application at hand. The experimental results on cross-validation schemes for pair-input data help to understand how existing knowledge regarding dependent instances (such those concerning protein–protein pairs) can be leveraged to improve the generalisation performance estimates of learned models. Healthcare documents and news articles contain knowledge that is more difficult to model than biomolecular events and tend to have larger vocabularies than biomedical scientific articles. This thesis describes an ontology that models patient education documents and their content in order to improve the availability and quality of such documents. The experimental results of this thesis also show that the Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation measures are a viable option for the automatic evaluation of textual patient record summarisation methods and that the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve can be used in a large-scale sentiment analysis. The sentiment analysis of Reuters news corpora suggests that the Western mainstream media portrays China negatively in politics-related articles but not in general, which provides new evidence to consider in the debate over the image of China in the Western media

The conference is organized alongside International Design Factory Week 2022, the annual gathering of DFGN members.     Letters from the War of Ecosystems – An Analysis of Independent Software Vendors in Mobile Application Marketplaces

    The recent emergence of a new generation of mobile application marketplaces has changed the business in the mobile ecosystems. The marketplaces have gathered over a million applications by hundreds of thousands of application developers and publishers. Thus, software ecosystems—consisting of developers, consumers and the orchestrator—have emerged as a part of the mobile ecosystem. This dissertation addresses the new challenges faced by mobile application developers in the new ecosystems through empirical methods. By using the theories of two-sided markets and business ecosystems as the basis, the thesis assesses monetization and value creation in the market as well as the impact of electronic Word-of-Mouth (eWOM) and developer multihoming— i. e. contributing for more than one platform—in the ecosystems. The data for the study was collected with web crawling from the three biggest marketplaces: Apple App Store, Google Play and Windows Phone Store. The dissertation consists of six individual articles. The results of the studies show a gap in monetization among the studied applications, while a majority of applications are produced by small or micro-enterprises. The study finds only weak support for the impact of eWOM on the sales of an application in the studied ecosystem. Finally, the study reveals a clear difference in the multi-homing rates between the top application developers and the rest. This has, as discussed in the thesis, an impact on the future market analyses—it seems that the smart device market can sustain several parallel application marketplaces.Muutama vuosi sitten julkistetut uuden sukupolven mobiilisovellusten kauppapaikat ovat muuttaneet mobiiliekosysteemien liiketoimintadynamiikkaa. NĂ€mĂ€ uudet markkinapaikat ovat jo onnistuneet houkuttelemaan yli miljoona sovellusta sadoilta tuhansilta ohjelmistokehittĂ€jiltĂ€. NĂ€mĂ€ kehittĂ€jĂ€t yhdessĂ€ markkinapaikan organisoijan sekĂ€ loppukĂ€yttĂ€jien kanssa ovat muodostaneet ohjelmistoekosysteemin osaksi laajempaa mobiiliekosysteemiĂ€. TĂ€ssĂ€ vĂ€itöskirjassa tarkastellaan mobiilisovellusten kehittĂ€jien uudenlaisilla kauppapaikoilla kohtaamia haasteita empiiristen tutkimusmenetelmien kautta. VĂ€itöskirjassa arvioidaan sovellusten monetisaatiota ja arvonluontia sekĂ€ verkon asiakasarviointien (engl. electronicWord-of-Mouth, eWOM) ja kehittĂ€jien moniliittymisen (engl. multi-homing) — kehittĂ€jĂ€ on sitoutunut useammalle kuin yhdelle ekosysteemille — vaikutuksia ekosysteemissĂ€. Työn teoreettinen tausta rakentuu kaksipuolisten markkinapaikkojen ja liiketoimintaekosysteemien pÀÀlle. Tutkimuksen aineisto on kerĂ€tty kolmelta suurimmalta mobiilisovellusmarkkinapaikalta: Apple App Storesta, Google PlaystĂ€ ja Windows Phone Storesta. TĂ€mĂ€ artikkelivĂ€itöskirja koostuu kuudesta itsenĂ€isestĂ€ tutkimuskĂ€sikirjoituksesta. Artikkelien tulokset osoittavat puutteita monetisaatiossa tutkittujen sovellusten joukossa. MerkittĂ€vĂ€ osa tarkastelluista sovelluksista on pienten yritysten tai yksittĂ€isten kehittĂ€jien julkaisemia. Tutkimuksessa löydettiin vain heikkoa tukea eWOM:in positiiviselle vaikutukselle sovellusten myyntimÀÀrissĂ€. TyössĂ€ myös osoitetaan merkittĂ€vĂ€ ero menestyneimpien sovelluskehittĂ€jien sekĂ€ muiden kehittĂ€jien moniliittymiskĂ€yttĂ€ytymisen vĂ€lillĂ€.     PROCEEDINGS 5th PLATE Conference

    The 5th international PLATE conference (Product Lifetimes and the Environment) addressed product lifetimes in the context of sustainability. The PLATE conference, which has been running since 2015, has successfully been able to establish a solid network of researchers around its core theme. The topic has come to the forefront of current (political, scientific & societal) debates due to its interconnectedness with a number of recent prominent movements, such as the circular economy, eco-design and collaborative consumption. For the 2023 edition of the conference, we encouraged researchers to propose how to extend, widen or critically re-construct thematic sessions for the PLATE conference, and the paper call was constructed based on these proposals. In this 5th PLATE conference, we had 171 paper presentations and 238 participants from 14 different countries. Beside of paper sessions we organized workshops and REPAIR exhibitions
