Discrimination in Mortgage Lending: Evidence from a Correspondence Experiment
We design and implement an experimental test for differential response by mortgage loan originators (MLOs) to requests for information about loans. Our e-mail correspondence experiment is designed to analyze differential treatment by client race and credit score. Our results show net discrimination by 1.8% of MLOs through non-response. We also find that MLOs offer more details about loans and are more likely to send follow up correspondence to whites. The effect of being African American on MLO response is equivalent to the effect of having a credit score that is 71 points lower
A Potential Function Derivation of a Constitutive Equation for Inelastic Material Response
Physical and thermodynamic concepts are used to develop a potential function for application to high temperature polycrystalline material response. Inherent in the formulation is a differential relationship between the potential function and constitutive equation in terms of the state variables. Integration of the differential relationship produces a state variable evolution equation that requires specification of the initial value of the state variable and its time derivative. It is shown that the initial loading rate, which is directly related to the initial hardening rate, can significantly influence subsequent material response. This effect is consistent with observed material behavior on the macroscopic and microscopic levels, and may explain the wide scatter in response often found in creep testing
Differential Tissue Response to Growth Hormone in Mice
Growth hormone (GH) has been shown to act directly on multiple tissues throughout the body. Historically, it was believed that GH acted directly in the liver and only indirectly in other tissues via insulin‐like growth hormone 1 (IGF‐1). Despite extensive work to describe GH action in individual tissues, a comparative analysis of acute GH signaling in key metabolic tissues has not been performed. Herein, we address this knowledge gap. Acute tissue response to human recombinant GH was assessed in mice by measuring signaling via phospho‐STAT5 immunoblotting. STAT5 activation is an easily and reliably detected early marker of GH receptor engagement. We found differential tissue sensitivities; liver and kidney were equally GH‐sensitive and more sensitive than white adipose tissue, heart, and muscle (gastrocnemius). Gastrocnemius had the greatest maximal response compared to heart, liver, white adipose tissue, and whole kidney. Differences in maximum responsiveness were positively correlated with tissue STAT5 abundance, while differences in sensitivity were not explained by differences in GH receptor levels. Thus, GH sensitivity and responsiveness of distinct metabolic tissues differ and may impact physiology and disease
Negative high-frequency differential conductivity in semiconductor superlattices
We examine the high-frequency differential conductivity response properties
of semiconductor superlattices having various miniband dispersion laws. Our
analysis shows that the anharmonicity of Bloch oscillations (beyond
tight-binding approximation) leads to the occurrence of negative high-frequency
differential conductivity at frequency multiples of the Bloch frequency. This
effect can arise even in regions of positive static differential conductivity.

All-optical differential current detection technique for unit protection applications
In this paper we demonstrate a novel, all-optical differential current protection scheme. By monitoring the optical power reflected from two matched hybrid fiber Bragg grating current sensors and using a simple optoelectronic threshold detector, an immediate response to an increase in differential current is achieved. A preliminary laboratory embodiment is constructed in order to characterize the performance of the scheme. The proposed technique does not require a complex sensor interrogation scheme, usually characterized by a limited sampling frequency, and thus will be capable of facilitating inexpensive and fast-acting differential protection over long distances
Does monetary policy have differential state-level effects? an empirical evaluation
The paper examines whether monetary policy has similar effects across major states in the Indian polity. Impulse response functions from an estimated Structural Vector Auto Regression (SVAR) reveal two sets of states: a core of states that respond to monetary policy in a significant fashion vis-à-vis others whose response is less significant.
