e-MIS Contents: Multimedia Contents for e-Learning Environments in Minimally Invasive Surgery
This work describes the design and application of multimedia contents for web technologies-based training in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). The chosen strategy allows knowing the deficiencies of the current training methods so new multimedia contents can cover them. This study is concluded with the definition of three different types of multimedia contents accordingly to the development degree and didactic objectives that they present: Didactic resources are basic contents such as videos or documents that can be enhanced with contributions of users. On the other hand, case reports and didactic units have a defined structure. Didactic resources and case reports provide an informal training while didactic units are included in a more regulated training

Teaching geography for a sustainable world: a case study of a secondary school in Spain
Geography has a major responsibility in delivering education for sustainable development (ESD),
especially because the geographical concepts of place and space are key dimensions for the
analysis and pursuit of sustainability. This paper presents the results of a research that investigated
how the teaching of geography in secondary education in Catalonia (Spain) contributes to ESD.
For the development of this research it was explored what is involved in understanding and
resolving issues about sustainable development and how geography teachers might best
conceptualize and teach in this new domain. As a result of this theoretical reflection it has been
defined a proposal or model for reorienting the geography curriculum from the basis of the ESD
paradigm, which is based and structured in four groups of criteria and recommendations as
follows: recommendations for defining competences and learning objectives; criteria for selecting
geographical contents and themes; criteria for selecting geographical areas and for the use of
scale; and finally, recommendations for choosing the most suitable teaching and learning
approach
DIGITAL: multidisciplinary and multidimensional in the classrooms
In this paper our aim is to analyse and present some pedagogical paths that prefigure and guide the teaching-learning devices developed "around" the digital tools. In this context issues related to the implementation with teaching methodologies and teaching techniques acquire a new dimension due to the need of transpose them into online learning environments (technologies to teach to technologies to learn). Computer‐assisted learning as an alternative to didactic lectures: A study of teaching the physics of diagnostic imaging
A computer‐assisted learning (CAL) package entitled Physics of Diagnostic Imaging was developed in 1995 to replace five hours of didactic lectures at the University of Glasgow Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and has been available as an additional learning resource for students in the other five UK veterinary schools for over three years. The package was reviewed by peer experts and the reaction of the students to its use gauged by post‐task questionnaire administration, informal discussions and observation. To assess the effect of integration into the curriculum, analyses of fourth‐year degree examination results over a six‐year period were carried out. Analyses of students’ examination results for pre‐ and post‐CAL delivery of the diagnostic imaging course showed that performance in the CAL‐based course was significantly higher than in other subjects. This confirmed that the courseware can be used to replace didactic lectures as part of a rich learning environment supported by other resources. Initial student resistance to lecture replacement with CAL occurred, but has lessened as the use of the package has become established in the curriculum
A Practical Application Primer on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia for Medical Residents
Introduction:
Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a well-established nonpharmacological intervention that is the gold standard treatment for insomnia. CBT-I has been utilized and empirically validated in many modalities, including group treatment, telemedicine, and primary care. Despite the wealth of evidence on its effectiveness, many medical providers, including those in primary care, where most insomnia complaints are raised, have limited exposure, knowledge, and resources to direct or implement this intervention.
Methods:
Medical educators from an academic medical center developed a module focused on teaching medical residents the techniques of CBT-I. The educational activity was an interactive 90-minute seminar that included a lecture followed by a case presentation illustrating the application of medical knowledge. A postseminar survey was used to evaluate the topic and content of the seminar.
Results:
In a survey of 32 primary care and psychiatry residents and sleep medicine fellows, 97% of respondents indicated that the topic of CBT-I should be included in the seminar series, and 84% indicated that the topic was of interest to them. Qualitative feedback underscored the relevance of this topic to trainees' clinical practice, as well as its underratedness.
Discussion:
The seminar on CBT-I was well received and viewed as a valuable tool in practicing medicine. The slides and vignettes provided enable replication of this workshop in other settings with medical learners who have a cursory knowledge of sleep medicine. The workshop is applicable to other health professionals, including medical students, nurses, social workers, and psychology trainees
The Online Faculty Development and Assessment System
This article evaluates the role of the Online Faculty Development and Assessment System (OFDAS), created at universities in the Canary Islands, Spain, in staff development. The evaluation indicates that the system helped staff in learning to teach curriculum and teaching capacities. The tasks, online resources and opportunities for discussions provided within the learning environment created for the system helped shape their attitudes towards learning curriculum and teaching capacities and enabled them to share their concerns about students’ classroom learning environment assessment
