    Exploration of robotic-wheel technology for enhanced urban mobility and city scale omni-directional personal transportation

However, in my view, mobility is also largely about personal freedom, i.e., the ability to exceed one's physical limitations, in essence, to become "more than human" in physical capabilities. This thesis explores novel designs for omni-directional motion in a mobility scooter, car and bus with the aim of increasing personal mobility and freedom. What links these designs is the use of split active caster wheel robot technology. In the first section, societal and technological impacts of omni-directional motion in the city are examined. The second section of the thesis presents built and rendered prototypes of these three designs.     Locomotion system for ground mobile robots in uneven and unstructured environments

    One of the technology domains with the greatest growth rates nowadays is service robots. The extensive use of ground mobile robots in environments that are unstructured or structured for humans is a promising challenge for the coming years, even though Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) moving on flat and compact grounds are already commercially available and widely utilized to move components and products inside indoor industrial buildings. Agriculture, planetary exploration, military operations, demining, intervention in case of terrorist attacks, surveillance, and reconnaissance in hazardous conditions are important application domains. Due to the fact that it integrates the disciplines of locomotion, vision, cognition, and navigation, the design of a ground mobile robot is extremely interdisciplinary. In terms of mechanics, ground mobile robots, with the exception of those designed for particular surroundings and surfaces (such as slithering or sticky robots), can move on wheels (W), legs (L), tracks (T), or hybrids of these concepts (LW, LT, WT, LWT). In terms of maximum speed, obstacle crossing ability, step/stair climbing ability, slope climbing ability, walking capability on soft terrain, walking capability on uneven terrain, energy efficiency, mechanical complexity, control complexity, and technology readiness, a systematic comparison of these locomotion systems is provided in [1]. Based on the above-mentioned classification, in this thesis, we first introduce a small-scale hybrid locomotion robot for surveillance and inspection, WheTLHLoc, with two tracks, two revolving legs, two active wheels, and two passive omni wheels. The robot can move in several different ways, including using wheels on the flat, compact ground,[1] tracks on soft, yielding terrain, and a combination of tracks, legs, and wheels to navigate obstacles. In particular, static stability and non-slipping characteristics are considered while analyzing the process of climbing steps and stairs. The experimental test on the first prototype has proven the planned climbing maneuver’s efficacy and the WheTLHLoc robot's operational flexibility. Later we present another development of WheTLHLoc and introduce WheTLHLoc 2.0 with newly designed legs, enabling the robot to deal with bigger obstacles. Subsequently, a single-track bio-inspired ground mobile robot's conceptual and embodiment designs are presented. This robot is called SnakeTrack. It is designed for surveillance and inspection activities in unstructured environments with constrained areas. The vertebral column has two end modules and a variable number of vertebrae linked by compliant joints, and the surrounding track is its essential component. Four motors drive the robot: two control the track motion and two regulate the lateral flexion of the vertebral column for steering. The compliant joints enable limited passive torsion and retroflection of the vertebral column, which the robot can use to adapt to uneven terrain and increase traction. Eventually, the new version of SnakeTrack, called 'Porcospino', is introduced with the aim of allowing the robot to move in a wider variety of terrains. The novelty of this thesis lies in the development and presentation of three novel designs of small-scale mobile robots for surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and they employ hybrid locomotion systems that allow them to traverse a variety of terrains, including soft, yielding terrain and high obstacles. This thesis contributes to the field of mobile robotics by introducing new design concepts for hybrid locomotion systems that enable robots to navigate challenging environments. The robots presented in this thesis employ modular designs that allow their lengths to be adapted to suit specific tasks, and they are capable of restoring their correct position after falling over, making them highly adaptable and versatile. Furthermore, this thesis presents a detailed analysis of the robots' capabilities, including their step-climbing and motion planning abilities. In this thesis we also discuss possible refinements for the robots' designs to improve their performance and reliability. Overall, this thesis's contributions lie in the design and development of innovative mobile robots that address the challenges of surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and the analysis and evaluation of these robots' capabilities. The research presented in this thesis provides a foundation for further work in this field, and it may be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the areas of robotics, automation, and inspection. As a general note, the first robot, WheTLHLoc, is a hybrid locomotion robot capable of combining tracked locomotion on soft terrains, wheeled locomotion on flat and compact grounds, and high obstacle crossing capability. The second robot, SnakeTrack, is a small-size mono-track robot with a modular structure composed of a vertebral column and a single peripherical track revolving around it. The third robot, Porcospino, is an evolution of SnakeTrack and includes flexible spines on the track modules for improved traction on uneven but firm terrains, and refinements of the shape of the track guidance system. This thesis provides detailed descriptions of the design and prototyping of these robots and presents analytical and experimental results to verify their capabilities

    MAP - A Mobile Agile Printer Robot for on-site Construction

    In this paper, we present a Mobile Agile Printer (MAP) construction robot; a highly agile, 4-legged, omnidirectional robot capable of 3D printing large structures. To overcome dynamic challenges when operating within an outdoors construction site, MAP incorporates a high-DoF 3D printing system connected to a mobile platform with novel features designed to enable disturbance rejection and live adaption to the robot's pose. In doing so, we demonstrate the benefits of designing construction robots with a focus on agility, a compact working volume and ability to operate within a potentially unlimited workspace. Performance tests were conducted showing smooth omni-directional motion as a key requirement for maintaining low 3D printing trajectory deviations over a large volume. In doing so, we show that MAP has the ability to construct in new ways more sensitive to its environment, context and concurrent on-site operations

    Obstacle Avoidance Based on Stereo Vision Navigation System for Omni-directional Robot

    This paper addresses the problem of obstacle avoidance in mobile robot navigation systems. The navigation system is considered very important because the robot must be able to be controlled from its initial position to its destination without experiencing a collision. The robot must be able to avoid obstacles and arrive at its destination. Several previous studies have focused more on predetermined stationary obstacles. This has resulted in research results being difficult to apply in real environmental conditions, whereas in real conditions, obstacles can be stationary or moving caused by changes in the walking environment. The objective of this study is to address the robot’s navigation behaviors to avoid obstacles. In dealing with complex problems as previously described, a control system is designed using Neuro-Fuzzy so that the robot can avoid obstacles when the robot moves toward the destination. This paper uses ANFIS for obstacle avoidance control. The learning model used is offline learning. Mapping the input and output data is used in the initial step. Then the data is trained to produce a very small error. To support the movement of the robot so that it is more flexible and smoother in avoiding obstacles and can identify objects in real-time, a three wheels omnidirectional robot is used equipped with a stereo vision sensor. The contribution is to advance state of the art in obstacle avoidance for robot navigation systems by exploiting ANFIS with target-and-obstacles detection based on stereo vision sensors. This study tested the proposed control method by using 15 experiments with different obstacle setup positions. These scenarios were chosen to test the ability to avoid moving obstacles that may come from the front, the right, or the left of the robot. The robot moved to the left or right of the obstacles depending on the given Vy speed. After several tests with different obstacle positions, the robot managed to avoid the obstacle when the obstacle distance ranged from 173 – 150 cm with an average speed of Vy 274 mm/s. In the process of avoiding obstacles, the robot still calculates the direction in which the robot is facing the target until the target angle is 0

    thesisIncreased demand for powered wheelchairs and their inherent mobility limitations have prompted the development of omnidirectional wheelchairs. These wheelchairs provide improved mobility in confined spaces, but can be more difficult to control and impact the ability of the user to embody the wheelchair. We hypothesize that control and embodiment of omnidirectional wheelchairs can be improved by providing intuitive control with three degree of freedom (3-DOF) haptic feedback that directly corresponds to the degrees of freedom of an omnidirectional wheelchair. This thesis introduces a novel 3-DOF Haptic Joystick designed for the purpose of controlling omnidirectional wheelchairs. When coupled with range finders, it is able to provide the user with feedback that improves the operator's awareness of the area surrounding the vehicle and assists the driver in obstacle avoidance. The haptic controller design and a stability analysis of the coupled wheelchair joystick systems are presented. Experimental results from the coupled systems validate the ability of the controller to influence the trajectory of the wheelchair and assist in obstacle avoidance

    Review article: locomotion systems for ground mobile robots in unstructured environments

    Abstract. The world market of mobile robotics is expected to increase substantially in the next 20 yr, surpassing the market of industrial robotics in terms of units and sales. Important fields of application are homeland security, surveillance, demining, reconnaissance in dangerous situations, and agriculture. The design of the locomotion systems of mobile robots for unstructured environments is generally complex, particularly when they are required to move on uneven or soft terrains, or to climb obstacles. This paper sets out to analyse the state-of-the-art of locomotion mechanisms for ground mobile robots, focussing on solutions for unstructured environments, in order to help designers to select the optimal solution for specific operating requirements. The three main categories of locomotion systems (wheeled - W, tracked - T and legged - L) and the four hybrid categories that can be derived by combining these main locomotion systems are discussed with reference to maximum speed, obstacle-crossing capability, step/stair climbing capability, slope climbing capability, walking capability on soft terrains, walking capability on uneven terrains, energy efficiency, mechanical complexity, control complexity and technology readiness. The current and future trends of mobile robotics are also outlined

    Motion Control of Holonomic Wheeled Mobile Robot with Modular Actuation

    This thesis proposes a control scheme for a new holonomic wheeled mobile robot. The platform, which is called C3P (Caster 3 wheels Platform), is designed and built by the Automation Lab., University of Heidelberg. The platform has three driven caster wheels, which are used because of their simple construction and easy maintenance. The C3P has modular actuators and sensors configurations. The robot’s actuation scheme produces singularity difficulties for some wheel steering configuration, described as the following: When all wheels yield the same steering angle value, the C3P cannot be actuated in the direction perpendicular to the wheel velocity vector. The C3P has a modular sensing scheme defined by sensing the steering angle and the wheel angular velocity of each caster wheel. This work has four main contributions 1- developing a controller based on an inverse kinematics solution to handle motion commands in the singular configurations; 2- modeling the C3P’s forward dynamics of the C3P for the simulation purpose; 3- developing a motion controller based on an inverse dynamics solution; and 4- comparing the C3P with other standard holonomic WMRs. In order to escape singularity condition, the actuated inverse kinematics solution is developed based on the idea of coupling any two wheel velocities to virtually actuate the steering angular velocity of the third wheel. The solution is termed as the Wheel Coupling Equation (WCE). The C3P velocity controller consists of two parts: a) the WCE regulator to avoid singularities and adjust the steering angles to the desired value, and b) the regular PID controller to maintain the reference robot velocities with respect to the floor frame of coordinates. The solution reaches acceptable performance in the simulation examples and in the practical experiments. However, it generates relatively large displacement errors only during the steering angles adjustment period. The Euler-Lagrangian method is used for obtaining the forward dynamic and the inverse dynamic models. The forward dynamic model consists of two equations of motion: the WTD (Wheel Torque Dynamics) to calculate the wheel angular velocities with respect to the actuated wheels’ torques, and the DSE (Dynamic Steering Estimator) for calculating the steering angles and steering angular velocities corresponding to the angular wheels’ velocities and accelerations. The inverse dynamics solution defines the forces and torques acting on each actuator and joint. The solution is used in the development of the C3P velocity and position controllers. In comparison to the proposed inverse kinematics solution, the inverse dynamics solution yields less displacement errors. Lyapunov stability analysis is carried out to investigate the system stability for different steering angles’ combinations. The steering angles’ values are considered as the disturbances affecting the platform. Finally, a comparison is made between the C3P and three other holonomic wheeled mobile robots configurations. The comparison is based on the simulation results in relation to the following aspects: a) mobility, b) total energy consumed by each robot in a finite interval of time and c) hardware complexity. The C3P platform shows its advantage in the aspects “b” and “c”
