The degree to which a country can benefit from its tourism industry depends largely on this competitive position on the international tourist market. Therefore, it is very important for one destination to realise its real competitive position on the tourism market as well as to address its weaknesses comparing them to its major competitors. There are different models for measuring the competitiveness. Among all, we follow the framework of authors Dwyer, Livaic and Mellor (2003), so called Integrated model of destination competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to present the model of destination competitiveness and results of the survey, based on indicators associated with the model. The results showed that Serbia is more competitive in its natural, cultural and created resources than in destination management while, according to the Integrated model, Serbia is less competitive in demand conditions, which refer to the image and awareness of the destination itself

Since the beginning of this decade, which corresponds to the processes of an accelerated political, social and economic opening to the European and global environment, the Republic of Croatia has become aware of the need for deep reforms to enable the creation of permanently sustained success of its national economy. In this context, the creation of conditions for efficiency in existing business entities, and the shaping of new and effective institutions, is becoming the central question for all of the necessary changes. It is also the same from the aspect of success in achieving individual reforms and their synergistic power and value. Besides subjective value judgments and a feeling about the degree of change that has been achieved, objective parameters of success are measured and observed in individual value scales that have become generally accepted regional, European and global standards. Since 1979, one standard has been the ranking of the World Economic Forum (WEF), in which Croatia has been included 2002. Croatia has been included n the rankings of the IMD rankings, which began in 1989, since 2006. At the same time, Croatia’s position has begun to be evaluated in other important rankings that measure the effectiveness of individual countries, such as Doing Business (the World Bank), the Index of Economic Freedom (the Heritage Foundation), the Bertelsmann Transformation Index (Bertelsmann Foundation), the Corruption Perceptions Index (Transparency International), the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (London Business School and Babson College), which are the leading and most recognized in a social and economic context.economic growth, business efficiency, structural reforms, institutional framework, competitiveness, international environment of the European Union.

The paper analyses the effects of the Mercosul commercial block on export intensity of different regions in Brazil. A gravitational model is employed to explain the intensity of exports of different Brazilian regions according to destination countries, differentiating those pertaining to Mercosul. Besides GDP, population and distance, typical of the gravitational model, indicators of regional competitiveness came out as important to explain regional export performance. The results indicate that the commercial block does not improve the export performance of regions, which are explained by the economic variables included in the model

ANÁLISE SUSTENTÁVEL DO MODELO DE CICLO DE VIDA. SITUAÇÃO E PERSPECTIVAS DE IXTAPAN DE LA SAL, MÉXICO

    Get PDF

    Do Remittances Increase Borrowing?

While recent literature has pointed out that migrants’ remittances have a positive impact on savings with financial institutions, findings with respect to access to and the use of loans have been ambiguous. This paper investigates whether the reception of remittances facilitates taking up loans from formal or informal sources among Mexican households and finds positive and statistically significant effects of remittances on borrowing and on the existence of debts. We address methodological concerns of selection bias and reverse causality through household fixed effects and an instrumental strategy that exploits distance to train lines and labor market conditions in the US as exogenous determinants of remittances

Foreign direct investment and international business cycle comovement

This paper investigates the relationship between bilateral FDI positions and cross-country business cycle correlations in the period 1982–2001. We find that countries that have comparatively intensive FDI relations also have more synchronized business cycles during 1995–2001. Before 1995, we also find a positive association between FDI linkages and output comovement, but this may partly reflect the effects of trade relations. Moreover, more intensive FDI links are also associated with a greater vulnerability to lagged output spillovers from abroad, whereas trade links are not. Policy implications of our research are (1) that there is an underlying tendency for business cycles to exhibit greater comovement in the future, and (2) that policy makers need to incorporate the FDI linkage among economies in their models and analytical framework for policy analysis.
