This study deals with modeling and performance analysis of footwear manufacturing using arena simulation modeling software. It was investigated that modeling and simulation is a potential tool for modeling and analysis of manufacturing assembly lines like footwear manufacturing because it allows the researcher to experiment with different variables and controls the manufacturing process without affecting the real production system. In this study Arena simulation software is employed to model and measure performance of existing manufacturing systems of footwear. A footwear assembly plant producing a moccasin model shoe in Ethiopia with a total number of 19 major parts to be assembled on two consecutive assembly lines (stitching and lasting) were selected for the model. Furthermore, 39 and 37 activities were identified for stitching and lasting production line respectively. For each activity, 15 numbers of observations have taken using stopwatch. All the collected data are statistically analyzed using arena input analyzer for statistical significance and determination of expressions to be used in simulation modeling. A standard validated simulation model was developed and run for 41 replications. The result shows that the stitching assembly line is operating with a line balance efficiency of 58.7% and lasting assembly line 67.6%. In the course of action, about four major problems were identified and solved with five proposed scenarios of which the best scenario results in improvement of assembly line balance efficiency of 93.5 and 86.3% for stitching and lasting respectively. This Arena Simulation Model has considered the production resources like machineries, employees and processing time; activity precedence relationships; and production methods in developing and testing scenarios. It can be applied to other complex manufacturing industries wishing to analyze and improve the performance of the production systems. Keywords: Modeling Simulation Performance Analysis Footwear Manufacturin

Hang up on stereotypes: Domestic violence and an anti‐abuse helpline campaign

We estimate the effectiveness of a government-led anti-domestic-abuse campaign launched in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic on the number of calls to the Italian domestic violence helpline. In the week after the start of the campaign, we document a sharp increase in the number of calls. By exploiting geographical variation in the exposure to the campaign ads aired on public TV networks, we find that greater exposure is associated with an increase in the number of calls after the launch of the campaign. However, the effectiveness of the media campaign is hindered in areas where gender stereotypes are stronger

PREDICTIVE POLICING: A Machine Learning Approach to Predict and Control Crimes in Metropolitan Cities

Security is the one of the basic need of human’s life and biggest challenge of history that cannot be diminished at least in metropolitan cities like Karachi. It can only be controlled by efficient resources allocation and effective strategies with forthcoming insight of criminal moves. Big data analytics with the support of machine learning algorithms makes it possible to deals with huge amount of data, extract hidden inter-connection, pattern and meaningful information. This paper, proposed the model for the predictive policing system and built test model using k-means and naïve Bayes methodologies for street crime in Karachi region. The model is then run under R and WEKA environment which produced accuracy around 70%

Leaving The Life: Exploring Services for Women Exiting Prostitution

    Get PDF
Women in prostitution (WIP) are significantly more likely to experience mental health issues and trauma than the general population (Farley, 2003; Ling, Wong, Holroyd, & Gray, 2007; Rössler et al. 2010; Roxburgh, Degenhardt, & Copeland, 2008). Previous research addressing the mental health of WIP emphasizes treating trauma to help women exit, both trauma that predated entry into prostitution and trauma experienced during prostitution (Carter & Dalla, 2006; Farley, 2003). Very little research is available on services for WIP, leaving psychotherapists with limited guidance on providing effective mental health treatment. Although programs exist exclusively to assist women leaving prostitution, little is known about what services they offer or if their services are trauma-informed. Because of this dearth, this study consists of exploratory program evaluations of eight agencies that focus primary on serving WIP to understand what services are provided to this population and how services address trauma. Constructive process evaluations are guided by Program Theory (Chen, 2015) and analysis uses Constructivist Grounded Theory to begin to fill research gaps about what services are available to WIP, what services are most helpful, how trauma is addressed in services, and how services could be improved for this vulnerable population of women
