Identification of good practices in the operation of nuclear power plants

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Nuclear Engineering, February 2005.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 102).This work developed an approach to diagnose problems and identify good practices in the operation of nuclear power plants using the system dynamics technique. The research began with construction of the ORSIM (Nuclear Power Plant Operations and Risk Simulator) model, with its operational component modified from an existing model, and its risk component newly created in this research. A matrix of high-level performance indices was also created to measure plant performance as a function of continuous operation. The research continued with development of an interface program to provide a user-friendly environment, and then culminated with a report of the results obtained from a pilot project, and a demonstration of using ORSIM to investigate EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) good practices. Both problem diagnosis and policy investigations were conducted in the pilot project. It was found that the performance matrix developed in this work was able to measure stability, reliability, and economic performance in a concise and clear manner. With this matrix, ORSIM was able to pinpoint bottlenecks of current operations and to project into the future what would be the implications of various policy changes.(cont.) It was also found that the tracking capability of ORSIM makes it easy to locate the root causes of problems and aids in identifying places where operational improvements might be implemented. In the EPRI good practices investigation, it was demonstrated that ORSIM is a good tool that assists plant managers in evaluating the benefits and risks of applying new practices. The pilot project and EPRI practices study showed that ORSIM is a good tool for plant managers to identify potential problems and to better understand the implications of their policy changes. It therefore can help improve the quality of decision-making and help achieve more stable, reliable, and economic operations of nuclear power plants.by Haibo Chen.Ph.D

Support Efficient, Scalable, and Online Social Spam Detection in System

    Get PDF
The broad success of online social networks (OSNs) has created fertile soil for the emergence and fast spread of social spam. Fake news, malicious URL links, fraudulent advertisements, fake reviews, and biased propaganda are bringing serious consequences for both virtual social networks and human life in the real world. Effectively detecting social spam is a hot topic in both academia and industry. However, traditional social spam detection techniques are limited to centralized processing on top of one specific data source but ignore the social spam correlations of distributed data sources. Moreover, a few research efforts are conducting in integrating the stream system (e.g., Storm, Spark) with the large-scale social spam detection, but they typically ignore the specific details in managing and recovering interim states during the social stream data processing. We observed that social spammers who aim to advertise their products or post victim links are more frequently spreading malicious posts during a very short period of time. They are quite smart to adapt themselves to old models that were trained based on historical records. Therefore, these bring a question: how can we uncover and defend against these online spam activities in an online and scalable manner? In this dissertation, we present there systems that support scalable and online social spam detection from streaming social data: (1) the first part introduces Oases, a scalable system that can support large-scale online social spam detection, (2) the second part introduces a system named SpamHunter, a novel system that supports efficient online scalable spam detection in social networks. The system gives novel insights in guaranteeing the efficiency of the modern stream applications by leveraging the spam correlations at scale, and (3) the third part refers to the state recovery during social spam detection, it introduces a customizable state recovery framework that provides fast and scalable state recovery mechanisms for protecting large distributed states in social spam detection applications

Prognostics and Health Management in Nuclear Power Plants: A Review of Technologies and Applications

    Get PDF
This report reviews the current state of the art of prognostics and health management (PHM) for nuclear power systems and related technology currently applied in field or under development in other technological application areas, as well as key research needs and technical gaps for increased use of PHM in nuclear power systems. The historical approach to monitoring and maintenance in nuclear power plants (NPPs), including the Maintenance Rule for active components and Aging Management Plans for passive components, are reviewed. An outline is given for the technical and economic challenges that make PHM attractive for both legacy plants through Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) and new plant designs. There is a general introduction to PHM systems for monitoring, fault detection and diagnostics, and prognostics in other, non-nuclear fields. The state of the art for health monitoring in nuclear power systems is reviewed. A discussion of related technologies that support the application of PHM systems in NPPs, including digital instrumentation and control systems, wired and wireless sensor technology, and PHM software architectures is provided. Appropriate codes and standards for PHM are discussed, along with a description of the ongoing work in developing additional necessary standards. Finally, an outline of key research needs and opportunities that must be addressed in order to support the application of PHM in legacy and new NPPs is presented
