    Optimization-Based Methodology for the Exploration of Cyber-Physical System Architectures

    In this thesis, we address the design space exploration of cyber-physical system architectures to select correct-by-construction configuration and interconnection of system components taken from pre-defined libraries. We formulate the exploration problem as a mapping problem and use optimization to solve it by searching for a minimum cost architecture that meets system requirements. Using a graph-based representation of a system architecture, we define a set of generic mixed integer linear constraints over graph vertices, edges and paths, and use these constraints to instantiate a variety of design requirements (e.g., interconnection, flow, workload, timing, reliability, routing). We implement a comprehensive toolbox that supports all steps of the proposed methodology. It provides a pattern-based formal language to facilitate requirements specification and a set of scalable algorithms for encoding and solving exploration problems. We prove our concepts on a set of case studies for different cyber-physical system domains, such as electrical power distribution networks, reconfigurable industrial production lines and wireless sensor networks

    This doctoral thesis presents new ideas and formulations on shipboard power system sizing and management. The main motivation behind this work is to fill, at least in part, the current technological and mythological gap between land and marine applications, concerning the sizing and management of power systems. This gap is the result of several changes regarding both the electric and marine applications. Two of these are, for example, the recent increase of electric power installed on board modern vessels and recent development of technologies for land microgrids. In this context, it should be noted that, also the modern ships are comparable to land microgrids, where the generation and loads are close in space and the on board power system may work either islanded or connected to the land grid. Nowadays, microgrids are a hot topic in electric engineering, with a constant development of novel approaches for both their sizing and management. On the other hand, considering the increase in the power installed on board ships, the traditional methods developed in the last century to size and manage these systems have shown increasing limitations and inaccuracies. This results in oversized power generation systems, low performances and high level of air and sea pollution due to ships activities. To overcome these problems and criticalities, this work presents a probabilistic approach to load prediction, which may increase the flexibility of the power system design and allow a significant reduction in the total power installed. Moreover, the traditional method to size the diesel generators, based on satisfying the maximum load, it is revised with the formulation of an optimal problem, which can consider as input either the results of the traditional method to load prediction or those obtained applying the probabilistic one. Finally, due to the recent introduction in land microgrids of energy storage system, which may cover the power fluctuations due to renewable resources, allow a better management of energy and increase the quality of service, an optimum method is developed and described in order to select, size and manage these systems on board ships

    Workshop on Database Programming Languages

    These are the revised proceedings of the Workshop on Database Programming Languages held at Roscoff, Finistère, France in September of 1987. The last few years have seen an enormous activity in the development of new programming languages and new programming environments for databases. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together researchers from both databases and programming languages to discuss recent developments in the two areas in the hope of overcoming some of the obstacles that appear to prevent the construction of a uniform database programming environment. The workshop, which follows a previous workshop held in Appin, Scotland in 1985, was extremely successful. The organizers were delighted with both the quality and volume of the submissions for this meeting, and it was regrettable that more papers could not be accepted. Both the stimulating discussions and the excellent food and scenery of the Brittany coast made the meeting thoroughly enjoyable. There were three main foci for this workshop: the type systems suitable for databases (especially object-oriented and complex-object databases,) the representation and manipulation of persistent structures, and extensions to deductive databases that allow for more general and flexible programming. Many of the papers describe recent results, or work in progress, and are indicative of the latest research trends in database programming languages. The organizers are extremely grateful for the financial support given by CRAI (Italy), Altaïr (France) and AT&T (USA).     Quality of experience and access network traffic management of HTTP adaptive video streaming

    The thesis focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of HTTP adaptive video streaming (HAS) and traffic management in access networks to improve the QoE of HAS. First, the QoE impact of adaptation parameters and time on layer was investigated with subjective crowdsourcing studies. The results were used to compute a QoE-optimal adaptation strategy for given video and network conditions. This allows video service providers to develop and benchmark improved adaptation logics for HAS. Furthermore, the thesis investigated concepts to monitor video QoE on application and network layer, which can be used by network providers in the QoE-aware traffic management cycle. Moreover, an analytic and simulative performance evaluation of QoE-aware traffic management on a bottleneck link was conducted. Finally, the thesis investigated socially-aware traffic management for HAS via Wi-Fi offloading of mobile HAS flows. A model for the distribution of public Wi-Fi hotspots and a platform for socially-aware traffic management on private home routers was presented. A simulative performance evaluation investigated the impact of Wi-Fi offloading on the QoE and energy consumption of mobile HAS.Die Doktorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Quality of Experience (QoE) – der subjektiv empfundenen Dienstgüte – von adaptivem HTTP Videostreaming (HAS) und mit Verkehrsmanagement, das in Zugangsnetzwerken eingesetzt werden kann, um die QoE des adaptiven Videostreamings zu verbessern. Zuerst wurde der Einfluss von Adaptionsparameters und der Zeit pro Qualitätsstufe auf die QoE von adaptivem Videostreaming mittels subjektiver Crowdsourcingstudien untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden benutzt, um die QoE-optimale Adaptionsstrategie für gegebene Videos und Netzwerkbedingungen zu berechnen. Dies ermöglicht Dienstanbietern von Videostreaming verbesserte Adaptionsstrategien für adaptives Videostreaming zu entwerfen und zu benchmarken. Weiterhin untersuchte die Arbeit Konzepte zum Überwachen von QoE von Videostreaming in der Applikation und im Netzwerk, die von Netzwerkbetreibern im Kreislauf des QoE-bewussten Verkehrsmanagements eingesetzt werden können. Außerdem wurde eine analytische und simulative Leistungsbewertung von QoE-bewusstem Verkehrsmanagement auf einer Engpassverbindung durchgeführt. Schließlich untersuchte diese Arbeit sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement für adaptives Videostreaming mittels WLAN Offloading, also dem Auslagern von mobilen Videoflüssen über WLAN Netzwerke. Es wurde ein Modell für die Verteilung von öffentlichen WLAN Zugangspunkte und eine Plattform für sozialbewusstes Verkehrsmanagement auf privaten, häuslichen WLAN Routern vorgestellt. Abschließend untersuchte eine simulative Leistungsbewertung den Einfluss von WLAN Offloading auf die QoE und den Energieverbrauch von mobilem adaptivem Videostreaming
