This thesis summarizes synthetic, catalytic, and mechanistic work towards improved understanding of steric and electronic ligand effects in systems supported by the frequently used RPNR’P (RPNR’P = R’N(CH2CH2PR2)2) pincer ligand. Chapter 1 provides an overview of previous work on the synthetic and catalytic effects of varying the substituents of the RPNR’P ligand or other ancillary ligands. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis and catalytic activity of a series of novel iPrPNMeP iron isonitrile complexes to investigate the role of the π-acid ligand. In chapter 3, an active and productive additive-free formic acid dehydrogenation system is developed and optimized using an iron iPrPNMeP catalyst. Chapter 4 discusses the synthesis of a new N-phenyl ligand iPrPNPhP and its coordination to ruthenium, followed by a detailed catalytic and mechanistic comparison between iPrPNR’P ruthenium complexes which differ only in their N-substitution. In chapter 5, the synthesis and characterization of a series of base metal iPrPNPhP complexes is described

New approach to phenanthridine alkaloids by intramolecular radical cyclization

The phenanthridine core is present in several natural products namely the phenanthridine alkaloids. Their synthesis is important in the pharmaceutical industry, so the development of new synthetic methods is welcomed by them. Radical reactions are involved in the synthesis of several natural products, among them the phenanthridine alkaloids. The use of tributyltin hydride and azobisisobutyronitrile is a common approach for the thermal generation of radicals. Beyond being an effective method, they have associated the toxic effects of the tin. For the past few years, N-heterocyclic carbene-boranes have being used in radical reactions, as radical mediators. Applications in radical reductions and, more recently, in intramolecular cyclizations have been reported. Here we report studies with N-heterocyclic carbene-boranes for the intramolecular cyclization of appropriated substrates for the synthesis of the phenanthridines core. For that, the substrates used include secondary and tertiary amines, an amide, and an ether. Attempts has been made to synthesise a heteroatom free substrate in order to understand the effect of the heteroatoms in the reaction, but without success. Two different N-heterocyclic carbene-boranes were synthesized based on imidazolium salts, the (1,3-dimethylimidazolium-2-yl)trihydroborate and the (3-ethyl-1-methylimidazolium-2-yl)trihydroborate. The reactions yields were below expectations, however the cyclization products were obtained. No reduction products were identified, showing the difficulty of the boranes to react with the substrate. It was identified a complex between a tertiary amide substrate and the borane, which may be the reason for the low yields. In the reaction with the ether it seems that the complex with the NHC-borane is also formed. It was also identified an adduct between the borane and the thiophenol, when this last one was used as co-adjuvant. The formation of that adduct should be the reason why the reactions with thiophenol had a lower yield.Unfortunately, all the attempts to increase the yield were unsuccessful

Sewage sludge heavy metal analysis and agricultural prospects for Fiji

Insoluble residues produced in Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) as by products are known as sewage sludge (SS). Land application of SS, particularly in agricultural lands, is becoming an alternative disposal method in Fiji. However, currently there is no legislative framework governing its use. SS together with its high nutrient and organic matter contents, constitutes some undesired pollutants such as heavy metals, which may limit its extensive use. The focus of this study therefore was to determine the total concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni and Mn in the SS produced at the Kinoya WWTP (Fiji) and in the non-fertile soil amended with the SS at 20, 40, 60, 80% application rates and in the control (100% Soil). The bioavailable heavy metals were also determined as it depicts the true extent of metal contamination. The treatment mixtures were then used to cultivate cabbage plants in which the total heavy metal uptake was investigated. Total Zn (695.6 mg/kg) was present in the highest amounts in the 100% SS (control), followed by Pb (370.9 mg/kg), Mn (35.0 mg/kg), Cu (65.5 mg/kg), Cr (20.5 mg/kg) and finally Cd (13.5 mg/kg) and hence a similar trend was seen in all treatment mixtures. The potential mobility of sludgeborne heavy metals can be classified as Ni > Cu > Cd > Zn > Mn > Cr > Pb. Total metal uptake in plant leaves and stems showed only the bioavailable metals Cu, Cd, Zn and Mn, with maximum uptake occurring in the leaves. Ni, despite being highly mobile was not detected, due to minute concentrations in the SS treatments. Optimum growth occurred in the 20 and 40% SS treatments. However maximum Cu and Mn uptake occurred in the 40% SS treatment thereby making the 20% treatment the most feasible. Furthermore the total and bioavailable metal concentrations observed were within the safe and permitted limits of the EEC and USEPA legislations

Recent Developments in Flavin-Based Catalysis:Enzymatic Sulfoxidation

The synthesis of optically active sulfoxides, compounds due to their unique properties, has been a main target for synthetic organic chemistry. Recent efforts in the field of biocatalysis have allowed the preparation of enantiopure sulfoxides starting from the corresponding sulfides while using relatively mild conditions. In fact, several different types of redox biocatalysts have been found that can catalyze enantio- and/or regioselective sulfoxidations. The most promising group of enzymes able to perform selective sulfoxidations is the flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs). Enzymes containing a flavin cofactor have already been widely studied and used in organic synthesis, especially in reduction and/or oxidation processes. This chapter highlights the recent efforts in the preparation of chiral sulfoxides catalyzed by different types of flavoenzymes, with special attention to the parameters that can improve their catalytic properties. Novel approaches that allow performing selective sulfoxidations in which modified flavin systems are used are also discussed.</p

Main-Group Lewis Acid/Base Pairs : Hydrogen Activation and Hydrogenation Reactions Thereof

    Get PDF
Hydrogen activation and subsequent hydrogenation reactions are commonly catalyzed by transition metal complexes. Lately it has been shown that these reactions can be performed using metal free main-group compounds, so called frustrated Lewis pairs , as catalysts. The literature review of this thesis gives a detailed discussion about these Lewis acids and Lewis bases pairs that, due to constructional strain, cannot quench each other s reactivity through adduct formation. They form reactive pockets that only fit small molecules. These are exposed to simultaneous reactivity of the Lewis acid and the Lewis base when entering the void. This might result in polarization and consequential reaction between the small molecule and the frustrated Lewis pair e.g. the reaction between the diatomic hydrogen molecule and a frustrated Lewis pair results in H-H heterolytic bond cleavage forming a reactive salt that can be used for further reductive reactions. In this work, the first example of oxygen Lewis bases in frustrated Lewis pair induced hydrogen activation is presented. This concept has later been developed, by others, to enable catalytic hydrogenation of carbonyls into alcohols. This is considered a breakthrough in frustrated Lewis pair chemistry. Aiming for asymmetric hydrogenation catalysts, the author focused on chiral frustrated Lewis pairs. Attempts to utilize camphor-backbones, did not result in the expected frustrated species. Yet, this seemingly dead-end revealed an intermediate frustrated state, in an internal acid-base equilibrium, facilitating reactions with hydrogen. Continuing with the concept, the terpene backbone was exchanged for a binaphthyl one. The free frustrated pair was formed, facilitating rapid and reversible reaction with hydrogen. The binaphthyl-derivative could also be used as a catalyst in asymmetric hydrogenations and up to 99% enantiomeric excesses were obtained. This is by far the best result obtained in asymmetric hydrogenations catalyzed by frustrated Lewis pairs. The presented catalyst can easily be modified to suit ones needs or used as such in the synthesis of chiral product, e.g. drugs or natural products.Vedyn aktivointi ja siitä seuraava vedytysreaktio on kemian kannalta erittäin tärkeä reaktio jota yleensä katalysoidaan siirtymämetalliyhdisteitä hyödyntäen. Väitöskirjan kirjallisuuskatsaus käsittelee metallittomia katalyyttivaihtoehtoja, niin sanottuja turhautuneita Lewis pareja . Turhautuneita Lewis pareja on hyödynnetty pienten molekyylien aktivoimiseen vasta kymmenen vuotta. Näiden tulosten pohjalta on kehitetty turhautunut Lewis pari-katalysoitu karbonyyliyhdisteiden vedytys alkoholeiksi. Tätä pidetään läpimurtona metallivapaassa katalyysissa. Myöhemmin työssä on keskitytty asymmetrisiin yhdisteisiin. Ensin on yritetty syntetisoida luonnon enantiopuhtaan terpeenin, kamferin, johdannainen joka sisältää turhautuneen Lewis parin. Yhdiste ei kuitenkaan muodostu kuten ennakoitu, eikä turhautuneisuutta näennäisesti synny. Molekyylin sisäisen tasapainoreaktion kautta muodostuu kuitenkin hetkittäinen piilotettu turhautuneisuus jolloin vedyn aktivointi tapahtuu. Tutkimusta on jatkettu yhdistämällä turhautunut Lewis pari toiseen enantiopuhtaaseen rakenteeseen, binaftyyliin.
