    Energy-efficient wireless communication

    In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications. In this way the applications can adapt the data streams, and the network protocols can adapt the communication parameters

    We refine existing performance studies of the WiMAX sleep mode operation to take into account uplink as well as downlink traffic. This as opposed to previous studies which neglected the influence of uplink traffic. We obtain numerically efficient procedures to compute both delay and energy efficiency characteristics. A test scenario with an Individual Subscriber Internet traffic model in both directions shows that even a small amount of uplink traffic has a profound effect on the system performance

    E2MaC: an energy efficient MAC protocol for multimedia traffic

    Energy efficiency is an important issue for mobile computers since they must rely on their batteries. We present a novel MAC protocol that achieves a good energy efficiency of wireless interface of the mobile and provides support for diverse traffic types and QoS. The scheduler of the base station is responsible to provide the required QoS to connections on the wireless link and to minimise the amount of energy spend by the mobile. The main principles of the E2MaC protocol are to avoid unsuccessful actions, minimise the number of transitions, and synchronise the mobile and the base-station. We will show that considerable amounts of energy can be saved using these principles. In the protocol the actions of the mobile are minimised. The base-station with plenty of energy performs actions in courtesy of the mobile. We have paid much attention in reducing the cost of a mobile for just being connected. The protocol is able to provide near-optimal energy efficiency (i.e. energy is only spent for the actual transfer) for a mobile within the constraints of the QoS of all connections in a cell, and only requires a small overhead

    Power optimization is a critical challenge in multimedia services over cellular communication systems. Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) has been developed for higher bandwidth access for accommodating today’s heavy data applications to provide better performance. Idle mode permits cellularstations to manipulate power and sources with the aid of limiting its activity for discrete periods and this eliminates the lively requirement for handover and other ordinary operations. Also, provides a periodical method for the cell station for pending downlink traffic directed to the cellularstation and as a result gets rid network handover traffic from basically inactive cellular stations. Discontinuous Reception (DRX) has been carried out to decrease the power intake of the consumer device, and transmission of big quantity of data. At data transfer, mobile device and the network phases negotiation occur. During other times, the device turns its receiver off and enters a low power state. Thereby similarly assisting numerous services and big quantities of information transmissions. This study prepossession of a massive quantity of data. Also proposes the two-power optimization modes idle mode and DRX mode parameters to achieve maximum possible power saving with the higher quality of multimedia services. Furthermore, the effectiveness of using DRX short cycles and DRX long cycles on multimedia services and the overall performance. Using OPNET Simulator 17.5, it concluded that DRX mechanism is preferred to operate compared with the Idle mechanism, also resulted that the DRX long cycles are a very good choice for all multimedia services and the overall network performance

    There is a considerable interest nowadays in making wireless telecommunication more energy-efficient. The sleep-mode mechanism in WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) is one of such energy saving measures. Recently, Samsung proposed some modifications on the sleep-mode mechanism, scheduled to appear in the forthcoming IEEE 802.16m standard, aimed at minimizing the signaling overhead. In this work, we present a performance analysis of this proposal and clarify the differences with the standard mechanism included in IEEE 802.16e. We also propose some special algorithms aimed at reducing the computational complexity of the analysis
