Definition and Measurement of the Adaptive IT Capabilities Construct
Information technology (IT) can play a key role as a necessary, but not sufficient, source of value. Contemporary research on the strategic role of IT is more and more taking the increasing dynamic and volatile business environment with its increasing intensity of market competition, demand for shortening time to market and pressure of first mover advantage into account. Following this approach, the strategic value of IT can be regarded as an enabler of organizational change. In order to be able to produce value to firms, especially in turbulent environments, IT has not only to adapt itself to a firm’s continuously changing competitive environment, IT has furthermore to enable the adaptation of firms core competences. This study investigates IT’s ability to enable these adaptations by introducing and validating a concept of adaptive IT capability which measures the extent that IT enables the adaptations of firms core competences. The result of this study is a validated research instrument that can be utilized in future research to investigate its antecedent enabling capabilities (upstream factors) as well its effect on organizations and their performance (downstream factors)
Mobile apps usage and dynamic capabilities: A structural equation model of SMEs in Lagos, Nigeria.

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Significant knowledge exists regarding the application of dynamic capability (DC) frameworks in large firms, but their impact on smaller organisations is yet to be fully researched. This study surveyed 1162 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Lagos in an effort to understand how SMEs in developing country contexts use mobile apps to enhance their businesses through DCs. Through the use of the covariance-based structural equation modelling (SEM) technique, the study explored the fitness of a conceptual formative model for SMEs. The model assembled 7 latent variables namely: mobile app usage, adaptive capability, absorptive capability, innovative capability, opportunity sensing ability, opportunity shaping ability and opportunity seizing ability. Subsequently, 15 hypotheses aimed at testing the relationships between the latent variables were developed and tested. The findings revealed that mobile app usage increases the adaptive, absorptive and innovative capabilities of SMEs. Absorptive capabilities help SMEs to maximise opportunities, while innovative capabilities negatively influence SMEs’ tendency to maximise opportunities. The results failed to establish a direct relationship between mobile app usage and SMEs’ ability to maximise opportunities. The research outcomes indicate that SMEs in Lagos respond to opportunities innovatively but they seldom exhibit innovation in order to create opportunities. The heterogeneous nature of SMEs complicates any clear-cut narrative as to how SMEs in Lagos should employ mobile apps to create and maximise opportunities. However, mobile apps could induce innovation and, as such, impact significantly when developed and applied to the contextual requirements of SMEs. Assessing Importance and Satisfaction Judgments of Intermodal Work Commuters with Electronic Survey Methodology, MTI Report WP 12-01
Recent advances in multivariate methodology provide an opportunity to further the assessment of service offerings in public transportation for work commuting. We offer methodologies that are alternative to direct rating scale and have advantages in the quality and precision of measurement. The alternative of methodology for adaptive conjoint analysis for the measurement of the importance of attributes in service offering is implemented. Rasch scaling methodology is used for the measurement of satisfaction with these attributes. Advantages that these methodologies introduce for assessment of the respective constructs and use of the assessment are discussed. In a first study, the conjoint derived weights were shown to have predictive capabilities in applications to respondent distributions of a fixed total budget to improve overall service offerings. Results with the Rasch model indicate that the attribute measures are reliable and can adequately constitute a composite measure of satisfaction. The Rasch items were also shown to provide a basis to discriminate between privately owned vehicles (POVs) and public transport commuters. Dissatisfaction with uncertainty in travel time and income level of respondents were the best predictors of POV commuting
An All-But-One Entropic Uncertainty Relation, and Application to Password-based Identification
Entropic uncertainty relations are quantitative characterizations of
Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, which make use of an entropy measure to
quantify uncertainty. In quantum cryptography, they are often used as
convenient tools in security proofs. We propose a new entropic uncertainty
relation. It is the first such uncertainty relation that lower bounds the
uncertainty in the measurement outcome for all but one choice for the
measurement from an arbitrarily large (but specifically chosen) set of possible
measurements, and, at the same time, uses the min-entropy as entropy measure,
rather than the Shannon entropy. This makes it especially suited for quantum
cryptography. As application, we propose a new quantum identification scheme in
the bounded quantum storage model. It makes use of our new uncertainty relation
at the core of its security proof. In contrast to the original quantum
identification scheme proposed by Damg{\aa}rd et al., our new scheme also
offers some security in case the bounded quantum storage assumption fails hold.
Specifically, our scheme remains secure against an adversary that has unbounded
storage capabilities but is restricted to non-adaptive single-qubit operations.
The scheme by Damg{\aa}rd et al., on the other hand, completely breaks down

Organizational speed as a dynamic capability: Toward a holistic perspective
Current research on organizational speed has been disjointed, which has left organizational speed as an underdeveloped area of study. In this essay, we expand the view of organizational speed as a multidimensional gestalt-like construct that may influence firm performance and competitive advantage. We offer a capability-based definition of organizational speed and identify and review the building blocks of organizational speed. We propose new avenues and questions for future research based on our perspective
An Adaptive Entanglement Distillation Scheme Using Quantum Low Density Parity Check Codes
Quantum low density parity check (QLDPC) codes are useful primitives for
quantum information processing because they can be encoded and decoded
efficiently. Besides, the error correcting capability of a few QLDPC codes
exceeds the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Here, we report a numerical
performance analysis of an adaptive entanglement distillation scheme using
QLDPC codes. In particular, we find that the expected yield of our adaptive
distillation scheme to combat depolarization errors exceed that of Leung and
Shor whenever the error probability is less than about 0.07 or greater than
about 0.28. This finding illustrates the effectiveness of using QLDPC codes in
