INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ PROCEDURAL ENVIRONMENTAL RIGHTS AND TRANSNATIONAL INDIGENOUS ADVOCACY NETWORKS
This thesis analyzes the central question: whether, by engaging with states and extractive multinational corporations (MNCs) within the international system, transnational Indigenous advocacy networks (TIANs) can promote the development and implementation of international legal norms relating to the rights of Indigenous peoples to participate and access information in environmental decision-making. It examines Indigenous peoples’ leadership and contributions to the development of international Indigenous rights norms and their continued roles in advancing the development and realization of their procedural environmental rights.
For context, this thesis examines Indigenous peoples’ collaborations that shaped the development of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, to exemplify Indigenous peoples’ influence in international law. It identifies and responds to some of the shortcomings of Indigenous rights movements and organizations without discounting their efforts and achievements. Thus, by modifying and adapting Keck and Sikkink’s analysis of transnational advocacy networks, this thesis introduces and explores a structure I term TIANs. TIANs will comprise webs of established Indigenous rights organizations operating internationally and seeking to initiate or maintain connections with domestic groups.
Constructivist international relations insights on the norm life cycle inform this thesis’ analysis of the potential roles of TIANs as norm entrepreneurs with the requisite organizational platform. International legal norms on Indigenous peoples’ procedural environmental rights have not been established in specific international rules, and domestic pressure is still being asserted for these rights to be respected. Hence, this thesis argues that these norms are at the first stage of the norm life cycle, and establishes the need for an international law instrument that unequivocally affirms and protects these rights. It analyzes four distinguishing and interrelated potential characteristics of TIANs that respond to the particularities of Indigenous rights advocacy: spheres of operation, shared principled ideas, advocacy strategies, and information strategies. These attributes will make TIANs well-positioned to bridge the gap between international and domestic Indigenous rights advocates, optimize transnational Indigenous alliances, and foster the actualization of international Indigenous environmental rights principles domestically. Essentially, TIANs are suitable to engage with states and MNCs to shape their actions regarding developing and implementing the emerging norms
The continuity and discontinuity of fundamental military concepts in Russian military thought between 1856 and 2010
This dissertation will demonstrate that there is a significant degree of continuity in Russian military thought over the 20th century due to the resilience of fundamental military concepts. To be conceptually fundamental is inextricably linked to historical continuity. The primary objective of this study, then, is to investigate the historical continuity of fundamental military concepts in Russian military thought between 1856 and 2010. In this regard, this dissertation attempts to show that fundamental military concepts ensured continuity rather than change, despite the changing strategic, political, and historical contexts. Ultimately, this research argues that socio-political and strategic ruptures have had a marginal impact on Russian fundamental military concepts. Thus, the present study seeks to provide new insights into 'conceptual continuity' in Russian military thought by using the military history of ideas between the late 19th and early 21st centuries. The study has concluded that fundamental military concepts that arose during the late 19th and early 20th centuries remained unaltered in Russia’s conceptualisation of modern warfare. The withdrawal of being and the discursive creation of the modern subject - an examination of the movement form being to non-being through a consideration of Heideggerean and Arsitotelian notions of being
This work considers what it means to 'be' human and seeks to show that it is in the activity of 'being' human that our individual identity lies, because this is the activity that determines what we are and what we will become. Aristotle asked the fundamental metaphysical question, "is a human being idle by nature?" and concluded, from his realisations concerning the dynamic nature of reality, that he is not. Accordingly, the metaphysical vision of 'beinghuman' that Aristotle articulated, which is considered and applied in this work, in contrast to the static notions of being presented by Heidegger and Christian scholasticism, presents an understanding of man as a potentially dynamic and internally active being, capable of maintaining himself by bein~ attuned to reality and thereby contemplating God. It seems most timely to explore Aristotle's understanding of 'being-human' because much postmodern thought seems to be concerned with locating the 'self, or explicating its disappearance in terms of an emancipation from form, or as the exposure of some form of illusion that has kept us all living the lie of selfhood. However, the 'absent' postmodern self finds a place in Aristotle's metaphysical vision, because not only did Aristotle recognise the significance of actively 'being' human, he also recognised that through deprivation and incapacity some forms of being can go out of existence or become something else. And it appears that our postmodern form of unconscious existence constitutes such an altered form, determined according to a deprivation of actively 'being', i.e., by 'non-being.' The determining movement of 'non-being', which emerges from the ontological gap created by failing to 'be', is considered throughout this work, particularly with regard to developments in language and technology, because it is through our single-minded engagement in external productive activities, which are incidental to 'being-human', that we have avoided the inner contemplative activity that inheres in human 'thinghood'

Re-thinking pathways from ethics to politics with Emmanuel Levinas: how can Levinas' radical re-grounding of ethics contribute to a radical transformation of the political?
The project of this thesis is to provide a novel reading of the work of Emmanuel Levinas to extract theoretical resources that can help address the numerous crises of the contemporary world. Beginning from the premise that the world is in a state of multiple crises and that current political groups and institutions are failing to find adequate responses, I argue that Levinas’ thought provides radically different, and often unsettling, contributions to these discussions. I first review the areas where Levinas discusses the political and identify key dynamics in his work that can hinder its deployment and contribute to unhelpful readings. Following this with an examination of the secondary literature of this topic, I establish important parameters of the future course of the thesis. Recognising the limitations of Levinas, I nevertheless proceed with the main exposition of the thesis, which aims to extract what is of most value in Levinas’ work, aiming to maximise its utility in challenging the political structures which are currently falling short. The project then circles back to the limitations left unresolved earlier and through the intervention of other thinkers seeks to ameliorate these issues. The main conclusions are as follows: first, Levinas’ work on the political should be read as being torn between commitments to both transcendence and freedom, and a somewhat conservative approach to politics. Second, the most helpful approach is to strongly emphasise the radical and antiauthoritarian elements. Third, that the result of this reading leads to an anti-political position, or at least with a vision of politics so alien it is hardly recognised as such. Finally, while Levinas’ work has issues, particularly around race and colonialism, that cannot be simply resolved, it retains the capacity for compatibility with other thinkers who can address them more adequately
Elizabeth sevginin her boyutunu okuyucuya aktarır. Elizabeth Phelps and Anna Sewell wanted to give their readers a new perspective by writing about animals, and they were successful. Anna Sewell's Black Beauty is a novel that recounts the autobiographical journey of a horse, the various forms of violence the human race endured during this journey, and the love he received from the human race directly from Beauty's mouth. Sewell chooses a horse as the protagonist because he is a writer who witnessed animal persecution in the 19th century first hand. In addition, the fact that he was injured as a child and his walking ability diminished drew him closer to horses; by providing horse-drawn transportation, she both sympathised with them and wished to convey this sentiment of empathy to children. Today, animal cruelty is no longer limited to individuals and a few animal owners. The scientific community continues to conduct animal experiments from the past. The novel Trixy, A Novel by Elizabeth Phelps is about an illegal lab for animal experiments and experimental animals. Trixy and Caro, the protagonists, are kidnapped and sold as experimental animals. The owner of Caro, Miriam, sues the laboratory and her lover, who works there and whom she wishes to marry. Elizabeth communicates all facets of love to the reader. What must be true of love? The text intersects between animal love, human love, and doctor and professional love. In this love triangle, the reader learns of the struggle of a woman who sacrificed her passion for animal rights. In both works, the authors could transcend their time and influence the present. Even so, illegal animal experiments continue, and animal torture is prevalent in all societies. Unfortunately, existing laws and institutions are insufficient to prevent this persecution
Giodano Bruno's 'Degli Eroici Furori' and Elizabethan poets in the context of sixteenth-century Italian Petrarch-commentaries
Giordano Bruno spent the years 1583-5 in London, during which time he published three Latin mnemonic treatises and the six Dialoghi Italiani, two of which were dedicated to Sir Philip Sidney : the Spaccio della Bestia Trionfante and the Degli Eroici Furori. The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the influence of the latter - a Petrarchan sonnet sequence with Neoplatonic commentaries - on Elizabethan poetry, in particular on the sonnet-cycles of Sidney and Fulke Greville, and the philosophical poetry of George Chapman. In this I am pursuing lines of research suggested by Dr F.A.Yates in her Study of Love's Labour's Lost (1936) and her essay on the Eroici and Elizabethan sonneteers (J.W.C.I, VI, 1943). My immediate aim was to test Yates' hypothesis that the Eroici Furori was the "supreme experience" for the English Petrarchists of the 1580s, and an influential model for their poetic practice. Ultimately I felt it was fairer to look at the Elizabethan sonnet in the wider context of the long and diverse Italian Petrarchan tradition, and to this end I undertook a prefatory historical sketch of the Italian Petrarch-comentary in the sixteenth-century from Pietro Bembo to Lodovico Castelvetro, including annotated editions of the Canzoniere, and less obvious forms of exegesis such as the lezzioni of Academicians and the "corrections" of spiritualizzamenti. In my comparison of the sonnets of Bruno, Sidney and Greville I assess the congruence or disparity of their uses of mutual mythical or Petrarchan topoi, and their relationship to the diverse typology of Neoplatonic love offered by the Petrarch-commentators. to Yates' assertion :hool of Night" or examining the possible and other poems, I Chapman's patron of Bruno texts and In my study of George Chapman I addressed myself that the poets, as well as the scientists, of the "Sc "Northumberland circle" were influenced by Bruno. In influence of the Eroici on Chapman's Shadow of Night have considered the potential role played in this by Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, whose collection annotations to the Eroici are also examined
THE INFLUENCE OF YOUTH LEADERS’ COMPETENCIES, EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, AND CLIMATE FOR CREATIVITY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE UAE GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS
Nowadays, leadership is an essential asset in youth society. Thus, this study aims to identify the required capabilities to determine their readiness and openness amongst other qualities to be able to identify those youths who are able to take on federal government leadership positions in the upcoming 4th Industrial Revolution which is important for the future economic success of the country. This research utilized the leadership competencies theory to locate the important competencies that are needed to create strong youth leaders. The research has suggested a model and a positivist research philosophy was used to examine the suggested model. A survey was designed to cover the different research constructs and distributed in the UAE governmental organizations at the top level of management to collect their views regarding to the suggested model.
The Structural Equation Model (SEM) and SPSS Software were used to examine the reliabilities and validity of the research constructs. The findings demonstrate change competence and team competence were the strongest drivers of youth leaders’ performance. Furthermore, the findings of this study indicated that ethical competence, across cultural competence, and self-competence have a significant influence on youth leaders’ performance. Contrary to the suggestion of this study, communication competence has no influence on Youth leaders’ performance. The results also indicate that only others’ emotional appraisal has a significant influence on youth leaders\u27 performance. The research results are expected to help the UAE government to create strong youth leaders who will be able to lead the country in the near future. Also, there are a lot of benefits for youth from the development of leadership such as; youth can communicate effectively with others, be responsible and make the right decision, and understand their values profoundly and better
What Caused the Big Bang?
This book critically explores answers to the big question, What produced our universe around fifteen billion years ago in a Big Bang? It critiques contemporary atheistic cosmologies, including Steady State, Oscillationism, Big Fizz, Big Divide, and Big Accident, that affirm the eternity and self-sufficiency of the universe without God. This study defends and revises Process Theology and arguments for God's existence from the universe's life-supporting order and contingent existence
Dance artist practitioners: an integrated model for the learning and teaching of choreography in the tertiary sector
This thesis proposes a new pedagogic approach to the learning and teaching of choreography in the tertiary sector appropriate to the perceived career contexts of the 21st century. The study draws upon personal and historical investigation of the choreographer-dancer relationship in theatre and education domains, identifying consensus practice at particular times and in particular contexts. Highlighting the two distinct genres from which they emanate, the disconnection between professional vocational training and educational approaches to learning and teaching of dance is examined and analysed in detail. Recent and relevant evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that the methods by which choreography is taught, learned and applied need reconsideration. The thesis argues that Peter Brinson's aspiration of the fully educated artist and autonomous thinker is crucial in developing intelligent, dextrous and versatile choreographers able to make, teach, perform, facilitate and apply choreography in diverse contexts. Most dancer/performers work in an essentially short-term and challenging environment where new fonns and languages evolve, and where they are required to take part in a wide range of didactic and democratic creative processes. The thesis defines and illustrates the Didactic-Democratic Continuum Model, a symbiotic teaching and learning methodology that will enable tertiary students to experience, understand, reflect upon and evaluate these processes. Within the dynamic context of artistic and interactive roles of dancer and choreographer, the intelligent application of general principles, rather than formulaic paradigms, is considered key. Further, the application of this model in the development of dance artist practitioners has implications for future teaching and training. The thesis is organised in three sections. Section A focuses on the historical perspective, and provides description and interpretation of the choreographer-dancer relationship in theatre and education domains. Section B, the personal experiential perspective, consists of a frame of reference for the concept of Dance Devising, and a review and observations of selected UK professional practice from 1993, deemed pertinent to the discussion. Section C considers the issues and principles pertaining to the design of the framework, presents the Didactic-Democratic Continuum Model for the learning and teaching of choreography from the perspective of the student, and discusses implications for
the implementation of the model
