    Under construction: infrastructure and modern fiction

    In this dissertation, I argue that infrastructural development, with its technological promises but widening geographic disparities and social and environmental consequences, informs both the narrative content and aesthetic forms of modernist and contemporary Anglophone fiction. Despite its prevalent material forms—roads, rails, pipes, and wires—infrastructure poses particular formal and narrative problems, often receding into the background as mere setting. To address how literary fiction theorizes the experience of infrastructure requires reading “infrastructurally”: that is, paying attention to the seemingly mundane interactions between characters and their built environments. The writers central to this project—James Joyce, William Faulkner, Karen Tei Yamashita, and Mohsin Hamid—take up the representational challenges posed by infrastructure by bringing transit networks, sanitation systems, and electrical grids and the histories of their development and use into the foreground. These writers call attention to the political dimensions of built environments, revealing the ways infrastructures produce, reinforce, and perpetuate racial and socioeconomic fault lines. They also attempt to formalize the material relations of power inscribed by and within infrastructure; the novel itself becomes an imaginary counterpart to the technologies of infrastructure, a form that shapes and constrains what types of social action and affiliation are possible

    The authors of the scientific monograph have come to the conclusion that the management of socio-economic systems in the terms of global challenges requires the use of mechanisms to ensure security, optimise the use of resource potential, increase competitiveness, and provide state support to economic entities. Basic research focuses on assessment of economic entities in the terms of global challenges, analysis of the financial system, migration flows, logistics and product exports, territorial development. The research results have been implemented in the different decision-making models in the context of global challenges, strategic planning, financial and food security, education management, information technology and innovation. The results of the study can be used in the developing of directions, programmes and strategies for sustainable development of economic entities and regions, increasing the competitiveness of products and services, decision-making at the level of ministries and agencies that regulate the processes of managing socio-economic systems. The results can also be used by students and young scientists in the educational process and conducting scientific research on the management of socio-economic systems in the terms of global challenges

    Acting like a state: visual analysis of Islamic State’s (staged) performances of modern stateness

    The ‘Islamicness’ (or not) of so-called ‘Islamic State’ (IS) has been controversial and come under intense scrutiny. This thesis investigates the under-studied other side of the equation: the ‘stateness of Islamic State’. Specifically, it enquires IS’s ‘performance of modern stateness’ projected in its official videos. Two core questions are addressed: How did IS project ‘performances of modern stateness’ in its official videos? What were the purposes behind those ‘performances’? The definition clause of the 1933 Montevideo Convention on Rights and Duties of States specifies that “[t]he political entity claiming to be a State must have (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) a government; and (d) the capacity to enter into relations with other states.” Following this framework and utilising qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA, the thesis provides detailed examination of IS’s portrayal of its population, territory, governance, and foreign policy in its videos. It establishes that IS had a vision to implement a 7th century ideology, but via 21st century means: its videos are replete with performances of specifically modern stateness. The thesis shows that IS performed like a State in its videos, not with the intention of seeking international recognition, but with the objective of giving local populations the impression that their needs as subjects were being met across the Caliphate while attracting immigrants from all over the world to come and help further the state project. This work contributes to a growing body of research on IS’s visual propaganda and its state-building project through detailed analysis of a large tranche of official IS videos, and will also prove beneficial in future research on de-facto Jihadi states and deradicalisation

    Managing Event-Driven Applications in Heterogeneous Fog Infrastructures

    The steady increase in digitalization propelled by the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to a deluge of generated data at unprecedented pace. Thereby, the promise to realize data-driven decision-making is a major innovation driver in a myriad of industries. Based on the widely used event processing paradigm, event-driven applications allow to analyze data in the form of event streams in order to extract relevant information in a timely manner. Most recently, graphical flow-based approaches in no-code event processing systems have been introduced to significantly lower technological entry barriers. This empowers non-technical citizen technologists to create event-driven applications comprised of multiple interconnected event-driven processing services. Still, today’s event-driven applications are focused on centralized cloud deployments that come with inevitable drawbacks, especially in the context of IoT scenarios that require fast results, are limited by the available bandwidth, or are bound by the regulations in terms of privacy and security. Despite recent advances in the area of fog computing which mitigate these shortcomings by extending the cloud and moving certain processing closer to the event source, these approaches are hardly established in existing systems. Inherent fog computing characteristics, especially the heterogeneity of resources alongside novel application management demands, particularly the aspects of geo-distribution and dynamic adaptation, pose challenges that are currently insufficiently addressed and hinder the transition to a next generation of no-code event processing systems. The contributions of this thesis enable citizen technologists to manage event-driven applications in heterogeneous fog infrastructures along the application life cycle. Therefore, an approach for a holistic application management is proposed which abstracts citizen technologists from underlying technicalities. This allows to evolve present event processing systems and advances the democratization of event-driven application management in fog computing. Individual contributions of this thesis are summarized as follows: 1. A model, manifested in a geo-distributed system architecture, to semantically describe characteristics specific to node resources, event-driven applications and their management to blend application-centric and infrastructure-centric realms. 2. Concepts for geo-distributed deployment and operation of event-driven applications alongside strategies for flexible event stream management. 3. A methodology to support the evolution of event-driven applications including methods to dynamically reconfigure, migrate and offload individual event-driven processing services at run-time. The contributions are introduced, applied and evaluated along two scenarios from the manufacturing and logistics domain

    Automatically exploiting high-level problem structure in local-search

    Constraint Programming is the study of modelling and solving complex combinatorial problems. Systematic-search and local-search are both well-researched approaches to solving constraint problems. Systematic-search exhaustively explores the entire search space and can be used to guarantee optimality, prove infeasibility or enumerate all possible solutions. Conversely, local-search is a heuristic-based approach to solving constraint problems. Often used in industrial applications, local-search is used to discover high-quality solutions quickly, usually sacrificing the ability to cover the entire search space. For this reason, it is preferred in applications where the scale of the problems being solved are beyond what can be feasibly searched using systematic methods. This work investigates methods of using information derived from high-level specifications of problems to augment the performance and scalability of local-search systems. Typically, abstract high-level constraint specifications or models are refined into lowlevel representations suitable for input to a constraint solver, erasing any knowledge of the specifications' high-level structures. We propose that whilst these lower-level models are equivalent in their description of the problems being solved, the original high-level specification, if retained, can be used to augment both the performance and scalability of local-search systems. In doing this, two approaches have been implemented and benchmarked. In the first approach, Structured Neighbourhood Search (SNS), a systematic solver is adapted to support declarative large neighbourhood search, using the high-level types such as sets, sequences and partitions in the original problem specification to automatically construct higher-quality, structured neighbourhoods. Our experiments demonstrate the performance of SNS when applied to structured problems. In the second approach, a novel constraint-based local-search solver is designed to operate on the high-level structures without refining these structures into lower-level representations. The new solver Athanor can directly instantiate and operate on the types in the Essence abstract specification language, supporting arbitrarily nested types such as sets of partitions, multi-sets of sequences and so on. Athanor retains the performance of SNS but boasts a unique benefit; on some classes of problems, the high-level solver is shown to be able to efficiently operate on instances that are too large for low-level solvers to even begin search
