    Robust 24 Hours ahead Forecast in a Microgrid: A Real Case Study

    Forecasting the power production from renewable energy sources (RESs) has become fundamental in microgrid applications to optimize scheduling and dispatching of the available assets. In this article, a methodology to provide the 24 h ahead Photovoltaic (PV) power forecast based on a Physical Hybrid Artificial Neural Network (PHANN) for microgrids is presented. The goal of this paper is to provide a robust methodology to forecast 24 h in advance the PV power production in a microgrid, addressing the specific criticalities of this environment. The proposed approach has to validate measured data properly, through an effective algorithm and further refine the power forecast when newer data are available. The procedure is fully implemented in a facility of the Multi-Good Microgrid Laboratory (MG(Lab)(2)) of the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, where new Energy Management Systems (EMSs) are studied. Reported results validate the proposed approach as a robust and accurate procedure for microgrid applications

    OPERATIONAL RELIABILITY AND RISK EVALUATION FRAMEWORKS FOR SUSTAINABLE ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS

    Driven by a confluence of multiple environmental, social, technical, and economic factors, traditional electric power systems are undergoing a momentous transition toward sustainable electric power systems. One of the important facets of this transformation is the inclusion of high penetration of variable renewable energy sources, the chief among them being wind power. The new source of uncertainty that stems from imperfect wind power forecasts, coupled with the traditional uncertainties in electric power systems, such as unplanned component outages, introduces new challenges for power system operators. In particular, the short-term or operational reliability of sustainable electric power systems could be at increased risk as limited remedial resources are available to the operators to handle uncertainties and outages during system operation. Furthermore, as sustainable electric power systems and natural gas networks become increasingly coupled, the impacts of outages in one network can quickly propagate into the other, thereby reducing the operational reliability of integrated electric power-gas networks (IEPGNs). In light of the above discussion, a successful transition to sustainable electric power systems necessitates a new set of tools to assist the power system operators to make risk-informed decisions amid multiple sources of uncertainties. Such tools should be able to realistically evaluate the hour- and day-ahead operational reliability and risk indices of sustainable electric power systems in a computationally efficient manner while giving full attention to the uncertainties of wind power and IEGPNs. To this end, the research is conducted on five related topics. First, a simulation-based framework is proposed to evaluate the operational reliability indices of generating systems using the fixed-effort generalized splitting approach. Simulations show improvement in computational performance when compared to the traditional Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS). Second, a hybrid analytical-simulation framework is proposed for the short-term risk assessment of wind-integrated power systems. The area risk method – an analytical technique, is combined with the importance sampling (IS)-based MCS to integrate the proposed reliability models of wind speed and calculate the risk indices with a low computational burden. Case studies validate the efficacy of the proposed framework. Third, the importance sampling-based MCS framework is extended to include the proposed data-driven probabilistic models of wind power to avoid the drawbacks of wind speed models. Fourth, a comprehensive framework for the operational reliability evaluation of IEPGNs is developed. This framework includes new reliability models for natural gas pipelines and natural gas-fired generators with dual fuel capabilities. Simulations show the importance of considering the coupling between the two networks while evaluating operational reliability indices. Finally, a new chance-constrained optimization model to consider the operational reliability constraints while determining the optimal operational schedule for microgrids is proposed.     Management of Islanded Operation of Microgirds

    Distributed generations with continuously growing penetration levels offer potential solutions to energy security and reliability with minimum environmental impacts. Distributed Generations when connected to the area electric power systems provide numerous advantages. However, grid integration of distributed generations presents several technical challenges which has forced the systems planners and operators to account for the repercussions on the distribution feeders which are no longer passive in the presence of distributed generations. Grid integration of distributed generations requires accurate and reliable islanding detection methodology for secure system operation. Two distributed generation islanding detection methodologies are proposed in this dissertation. First, a passive islanding detection technique for grid-connected distributed generations based on parallel decision trees is proposed. The proposed approach relies on capturing the underlying signature of a wide variety of system events on a set of critical system parameters and utilizes multiple optimal decision tress in a parallel network for classification of system events. Second, a hybrid islanding detection method for grid-connected inverter based distributed generations combining decision trees and Sandia frequency shift method is also proposed. The proposed method combines passive and active islanding detection techniques to aggregate their individual advantages and reduce or eliminate their drawbacks. In smart grid paradigm, microgrids are the enabling engine for systematic integration of distributed generations with the utility grid. A systematic approach for controlled islanding of grid-connected microgrids is also proposed in this dissertation. The objective of the proposed approach is to develop an adaptive controlled islanding methodology to be implemented as a preventive control component in emergency control strategy for microgrid operations. An emergency power management strategy for microgrid autonomous operation subsequent to inadvertent islanding events is also proposed in this dissertation. The proposed approach integrates microgrid resources such as energy storage systems, demand response resources, and controllable micro-sources to layout a comprehensive power management strategy for ensuring secure and stable microgrid operation following an unplanned islanding event. In this dissertation, various case studies are presented to validate the proposed methods. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies

    Optimization-Based Energy Management for Multi-energy Maritime Grids

    This open access book discusses the energy management for the multi-energy maritime grid, which is the local energy network installed in harbors, ports, ships, ferries, or vessels. The grid consists of generation, storage, and critical loads. It operates either in grid-connected or in islanding modes, under the constraints of both power system and transportation system. With full electrification, the future maritime grids, such as all-electric ships and seaport microgrids, will become “maritime multi-energy system” with the involvement of multiple energy, i.e., electrical power, fossil fuel, and heating/cooling power. With various practical cases, this book provides a cross-disciplinary view of the green and sustainable shipping via the energy management of maritime grids. In this book, the concepts and definitions of the multi-energy maritime grids are given after a comprehensive literature survey, and then the global and regional energy efficiency policies for the maritime transportation are illustrated.     Resilience-driven planning and operation of networked microgrids featuring decentralisation and flexibility

    High-impact and low-probability extreme events including both man-made events and natural weather events can cause severe damage to power systems. These events are typically rare but featured in long duration and large scale. Many research efforts have been conducted on the resilience enhancement of modern power systems. In recent years, microgrids (MGs) with distributed energy resources (DERs) including both conventional generation resources and renewable energy sources provide a viable solution for the resilience enhancement of such multi-energy systems during extreme events. More specifically, several islanded MGs after extreme events can be connected with each other as a cluster, which has the advantage of significantly reducing load shedding through energy sharing among them. On the other hand, mobile power sources (MPSs) such as mobile energy storage systems (MESSs), electric vehicles (EVs), and mobile emergency generators (MEGs) have been gradually deployed in current energy systems for resilience enhancement due to their significant advantages on mobility and flexibility. Given such a context, a literature review on resilience-driven planning and operation problems featuring MGs is presented in detail, while research limitations are summarised briefly. Then, this thesis investigates how to develop appropriate planning and operation models for the resilience enhancement of networked MGs via different types of DERs (e.g., MGs, ESSs, EVs, MESSs, etc.). This research is conducted in the following application scenarios: 1. This thesis proposes novel operation strategies for hybrid AC/DC MGs and networked MGs towards resilience enhancement. Three modelling approaches including centralised control, hierarchical control, and distributed control have been applied to formulate the proposed operation problems. A detailed non-linear AC OPF algorithm is employed to model each MG capturing all the network and technical constraints relating to stability properties (e.g., voltage limits, active and reactive power flow limits, and power losses), while uncertainties associated with renewable energy sources and load profiles are incorporated into the proposed models via stochastic programming. Impacts of limited generation resources, load distinction intro critical and non-critical, and severe contingencies (e.g., multiple line outages) are appropriately captured to mimic a realistic scenario. 2. This thesis introduces MPSs (e.g., EVs and MESSs) into the suggested networked MGs against the severe contingencies caused by extreme events. Specifically, time-coupled routing and scheduling characteristics of MPSs inside each MG are modelled to reduce load shedding when large damage is caused to each MG during extreme events. Both transportation networks and power networks are considered in the proposed models, while transporting time of MPSs between different transportation nodes is also appropriately captured. 3. This thesis focuses on developing realistic planning models for the optimal sizing problem of networked MGs capturing a trade-off between resilience and cost, while both internal uncertainties and external contingencies are considered in the suggested three-level planning model. Additionally, a resilience-driven planning model is developed to solve the coupled optimal sizing and pre-positioning problem of MESSs in the context of decentralised networked MGs. Internal uncertainties are captured in the model via stochastic programming, while external contingencies are included through the three-level structure. 4. This thesis investigates the application of artificial intelligence techniques to power system operations. Specifically, a model-free multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) approach is proposed for the coordinated routing and scheduling problem of multiple MESSs towards resilience enhancement. The parameterized double deep Q-network method (P-DDQN) is employed to capture a hybrid policy including both discrete and continuous actions. A coupled power-transportation network featuring a linearised AC OPF algorithm is realised as the environment, while uncertainties associated with renewable energy sources, load profiles, line outages, and traffic volumes are incorporated into the proposed data-driven approach through the learning procedure.Open Acces

    Reducing Grid Distortions Utilizing Energy Demand Prediction and Local Storages

Specifically, the integration of storages into the grid architecture serves several purposes, including the handling of the statistical variation of energy supply through increasing usage of renewable energy sources as well as the optimization of the daily energy usage through load scheduling. This article is focusing on the reduction of the grid distortions using non-linear convex optimization. In detail an analytic storage model is used in combination with a load forecasting technique based on socio-economic information of a community of households. It is shown that the proposed load forecasting technique leads to significantly reduced forecasting errors (relative reductions up-to 14.2%), while the proposed storage optimization based on non-linear convex optimizations leads to 12.9% reductions in terms of peak to average values for ideal storages and 9.9% for storages with consideration of losses respectively. Furthermore, it was shown that the largest improvements can be made when storages are utilized for a community of households with a storage size of 4.6-8.2 kWh per household showing the effectiveness of shared storages as well as load forecasting for a community of households.Peer reviewe

    A Review on Application of Artificial Intelligence Techniques in Microgrids

    A microgrid can be formed by the integration of different components such as loads, renewable/conventional units, and energy storage systems in a local area. Microgrids with the advantages of being flexible, environmentally friendly, and self-sufficient can improve the power system performance metrics such as resiliency and reliability. However, design and implementation of microgrids are always faced with different challenges considering the uncertainties associated with loads and renewable energy resources (RERs), sudden load variations, energy management of several energy resources, etc. Therefore, it is required to employ such rapid and accurate methods, as artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, to address these challenges and improve the MG's efficiency, stability, security, and reliability. Utilization of AI helps to develop systems as intelligent as humans to learn, decide, and solve problems. This paper presents a review on different applications of AI-based techniques in microgrids such as energy management, load and generation forecasting, protection, power electronics control, and cyber security. Different AI tasks such as regression and classification in microgrids are discussed using methods including machine learning, artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic, support vector machines, etc. The advantages, limitation, and future trends of AI applications in microgrids are discussed.©2022 IEEE.
