Gaps and requirements for applying automatic architectural design to building renovation
The renovation of existing buildings provides an opportunity to change the layout to meet the needs of facilities and accomplish sustainability in the built environment at high utilisation rates and low cost. However, building renovation design is complex, and completing architectural design schemes manually needs more efficiency and overall robustness. With the use of computational optimisation, automatic architectural design (AAD) can efficiently assist in building renovation through decision-making based on performance evaluation. This paper comprehensively analyses AAD's current research status and provides a state-of-the-art overview of applying AAD technology to building renovation. Besides, gaps and requirements of using AAD for building renovation are explored from quantitative and qualitative aspects, providing ideas for future research. The research shows that there is still much work to be done to apply AAD to building renovation, including quickly obtaining input data, expanding optimisation topics, selecting design methods, and improving workflow and efficiency
Achieving manufacturing excellence through the integration of enterprise systems and simulation
This paper discusses the significance of the enterprise systems and simulation integration in improving shop floorâs short-term production planning capability. The ultimate objectives are to identify the integration protocols, optimisation parameters and critical design artefacts, thereby identifying key âingredientsâ that help in setting out a future research agenda in pursuit of optimum decision-making at the shop floor level. While the integration of enterprise systems and simulation gains a widespread agreement within the existing work, the optimality, scalability and flexibility of the schedules remained unanswered. Furthermore, there seems to be no commonality or pattern as to how many core modules are required to enable such a flexible and scalable integration. Nevertheless, the objective of such integration remains clear, i.e. to achieve an optimum total production time, lead time, cycle time, production release rates and cost. The issues presently faced by existing enterprise systems (ES), if properly addressed, can contribute to the achievement of manufacturing excellence and can help identify the building blocks for the software architectural platform enabling the integration
Fixed-Layout Assembly (FLA) systems are used to assemble large and bulky products. These products are often unique and require customer-specific engineering and customization. FLA systems are frequently prone to disturbances and plan deviations throughout operations: delayed deliveries, incompatibility or failures of equipment, and unplanned absences of operators. Planners therefore need a simple and efficient tool to quickly forecast the impact of changes on the whole assembly system. A solution concept has been presented by the authors in a previous publication (Billiet and Stark, 2022). The authors presented a method to automatically generate a simulation model by using data concerning the products, orders and shifts from the ERP system. This paper describes the implementation of the previously presented solution concept by applying it to a FLA for the production of Large Motors and Converters (LMC) in Berlin
Designing an Open Virtual Factory of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises for Industrial Engineering Education
Curriculum of Industrial Engineering program must accomplish
the requirement that graduates have the ability to design,
develop, implement, and improve integrated system that include
people, materials, equipment and energy. However, it is not easy
to implement a curriculum that fosters such competencies. One of
the strategies to achieve that is using an innovative learning
media, so that the problem-based learning (PBL) can be
accustomed. In this paper, we design a web-based enterprise
resources planning. It is aimed to capture the real problem of
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in bottled drinking
water industries. The integrated system can be illustrated as ERP
application that designed by using free open source software
(FOSS). This research aimed to utilize the application to improve
teaching methods in IE education. The result of the research can
be used to improve the competencies of IE students, especially the
abilities to identify, formulate, and solve the activities of the
business process improvement in SMEs.

Digital Supply Chain Twins in Urban Logistics System â Conception of an Integrative Platform
Current trends in urban areas pose several challenges to city logistics stakeholders while also offering opportunities for optimization. With its analytics, modelling and simulation capabilities, the Digital Supply Chain Twin (DSCT) technology provides a possibility to optimize urban logistics processes. However, a number of barriers have limited the implementation of holistic DSCTs so far. An integrative, collaborative platform could decrease these barriers. By applying design science research methodology and expert interviews, this paper develops an architecture for a high-level cross-institutional platform for the generation of DSCTs. This framework includes a modular design of the platform through eight functional modules. The platform can facilitate the implementation of DSCTs for urban stakeholders and thus optimize urban logistics processes
Current trends on ICT technologies for enterprise information sÂČystems
The proposed paper discusses the current trends on ICT technologies for Enterprise Information Systems. The paper starts by defining four big challenges of the next generation of information systems: (1) Data Value Chain Management; (2) Context Awareness; (3) Interaction and Visualization; and (4) Human Learning. The major contributions towards the next generation of information systems are elaborated based on the work and experience of the authors and their teams. This includes: (1) Ontology based solutions for semantic interoperability; (2) Context aware infrastructures; (3) Product Avatar based interactions; and (4) Human learning. Finally the current state of research is discussed highlighting the impact of these solutions on the economic and social landscape
