The Cayley-Menger determinant is irreducible for
We prove that the Cayley-Menger determinant of an -dimensional simplex is
an absolutely irreducible polynomial for We also study the
irreducibility of polynomials associated to related geometric constructions.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Helical buckling of a whirling conducting rod in a uniform magnetic field
We study the effect of a magnetic field on the behaviour of a conducting
elastic rod subject to a novel set of boundary conditions that, in the case of
a transversely isotropic rod, give rise to exact helical post-buckling
solutions. The equations used are the geometrically exact Kirchhoff equations
and both static (buckling) and dynamic (whirling) instability are considered.
Critical loads are obtained explicitly and are given by a surprisingly simple
formula. By solving the linearised equations about the (quasi-)stationary
solutions we also find secondary instabilities described by (Hamiltonian-)Hopf
bifurcations, the usual signature of incipient `breathing' modes. The boundary
conditions can also be used to generate and study helical solutions through
traditional non-magnetic buckling due to compression, twist or whirl.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:0810.366
New determinations of gamma-ray line intensities of the Ep = 550 keV and Ep = 1747 keV resonances of the 13-C(p,gamma)14-N reaction
Gamma-ray angular distributions for the resonances at Ep = 550 keV and 1747
keV of the radiative capture reaction 13-C(p,g)14-N have been measured, using
intense proton beams on isotopically pure 13-C targets. Relative intensities
for the strongest transitions were extracted with an accuracy of typically five
per cent, making these resonances new useful gamma-ray standards for efficiency
calibration in the energy range Egamma = 1.6 to 9 MeV.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, Nuclear Instruments and Methods, Sec. A,

Gauge invariant derivative expansion of the effective action at finite temperature and density and the scalar field in 2+1 dimensions
A method is presented for the computation of the one-loop effective action at
finite temperature and density. The method is based on an expansion in the
number of spatial covariant derivatives. It applies to general background field
configurations with arbitrary internal symmetry group and space-time
dependence. Full invariance under small and large gauge transformations is
preserved without assuming stationary or Abelian fields nor fixing the gauge.
The method is applied to the computation of the effective action of spin zero
particles in 2+1 dimensions at finite temperature and density and in presence
of background gauge fields. The calculation is carried out through second order
in the number of spatial covariant derivatives. Some limiting cases are worked
out.Comment: 34 pages, REVTEX, no figures. Further comments adde
