From SpaceStat to CyberGIS: Twenty Years of Spatial Data Analysis Software
This essay assesses the evolution of the way in which spatial data analytical methods have been incorporated into software tools over the past two decades. It is part retrospective and prospective, going beyond a historical review to outline some ideas about important factors that drove the software development, such as methodological advances, the open source movement and the advent of the internet and cyberinfrastructure. The review highlights activities carried out by the author and his collaborators and uses SpaceStat, GeoDa, PySAL and recent spatial analytical web services developed at the ASU GeoDa Center as illustrative examples. It outlines a vision for a spatial econometrics workbench as an example of the incorporation of spatial analytical functionality in a cyberGIS.
e-Science Infrastructure for the Social Sciences
When the term âe-Scienceâ became popular, it frequently was referred to as âenhanced scienceâ or âelectronic scienceâ. More telling is the definition âe-Science is about global collaboration in key areas of science and the next generation of infrastructure that will enable itâ (Taylor, 2001). The question arises to what extent can the social sciences profit from recent developments in e- Science infrastructure? While computing, storage and network capacities so far were sufficient to accommodate and access social science data bases, new capacities and technologies support new types of research, e.g. linking and analysing transactional or audio-visual data. Increasingly collaborative working by researchers in distributed networks is efficiently supported and new resources are available for e-learning. Whether these new developments become transformative or just helpful will very much depend on whether their full potential is recognized and creatively integrated into new research designs by theoretically innovative scientists. Progress in e-Science was very much linked to the vision of the Grid as âa software infrastructure that enables flexible, secure, coordinated resource sharing among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions and resourcesâ and virtually unlimited computing capacities (Foster et al. 2000). In the Social Sciences there has been considerable progress in using modern IT- technologies for multilingual access to virtual distributed research databases across Europe and beyond (e.g. NESSTAR, CESSDA â Portal), data portals for access to statistical offices and for linking access to data, literature, project, expert and other data bases (e.g. Digital Libraries, VASCODA/SOWIPORT). Whether future developments will need GRID enabling of social science databases or can be further developed using WEB 2.0 support is currently an open question. The challenges here are seamless integration and interoperability of data bases, a requirement that is also stipulated by internationalisation and trans-disciplinary research. This goes along with the need for standards and harmonisation of data and metadata. Progress powered by e- infrastructure is, among others, dependent on regulatory frameworks and human capital well trained in both, data science and research methods. It is also dependent on sufficient critical mass of the institutional infrastructure to efficiently support a dynamic research community that wants to âtake the lead without catching upâ.
Adding eScience Assets to the Data Web
Aggregations of Web resources are increasingly important in scholarship as it
adopts new methods that are data-centric, collaborative, and networked-based.
The same notion of aggregations of resources is common to the mashed-up,
socially networked information environment of Web 2.0. We present a mechanism
to identify and describe aggregations of Web resources that has resulted from
the Open Archives Initiative - Object Reuse and Exchange (OAI-ORE) project. The
OAI-ORE specifications are based on the principles of the Architecture of the
World Wide Web, the Semantic Web, and the Linked Data effort. Therefore, their
incorporation into the cyberinfrastructure that supports eScholarship will

Comments on Greenhow, Robelia, and Hughes: Technologies That Facilitate Generating Knowledge and Possibly Wisdom
Greenhow, Robelia, and Hughes (2009) argue that Web 2.0 media are well suited to enhancing the education research communityâs purpose of generating and sharing knowledge. My response first articulates how a research infrastructure with capabilities for communal bookmarking, photo/video sharing, social networking, wikis, and mashups could enhance both the pace and quality of education scholarship, complementing federal investments in cyberinfrastructure. Then, I argue for a second, more provocative and controversial usage of this research infrastructure: an experimental attempt to generate âwisdom.â An interconnected suite of Web 2.0 tools customized for research would provide three capabilities important for wise advice: (a) a virtual setting in which stakeholders of many different types could dialogue (b) about rich artifacts grounded in practice and policy (c) with a set of social supports to encourage community norms that respect not only theoretical rigor and empirical evidence, but also interpersonal, experiential, and moral/ethical understandings
A Framework for Globally Optimizing Mixed-Integer Signomial Programs
Mixed-integer signomial optimization problems have broad applicability in engineering. Extending the Global Mixed-Integer Quadratic Optimizer, GloMIQO (Misener, Floudas in J. Glob. Optim., 2012. doi:10.1007/s10898-012-9874-7), this manuscript documents a computational framework for deterministically addressing mixed-integer signomial optimization problems to Δ-global optimality. This framework generalizes the GloMIQO strategies of (1) reformulating user input, (2) detecting special mathematical structure, and (3) globally optimizing the mixed-integer nonconvex program. Novel contributions of this paper include: flattening an expression tree towards term-based data structures; introducing additional nonconvex terms to interlink expressions; integrating a dynamic implementation of the reformulation-linearization technique into the branch-and-cut tree; designing term-based underestimators that specialize relaxation strategies according to variable bounds in the current tree node. Computational results are presented along with comparison of the computational framework to several state-of-the-art solvers. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York
Issues for the sharing and re-use of scientific workflows
In this paper, we outline preliminary findings from an ongoing study we have been conducting over the past 18 months of researchersâ use of myExperiment, a Web 2.0-based repository with a focus on social networking around shared research artefacts such as workflows. We present evidence of myExperiment usersâ workflow sharing and re-use practices, motivations, concerns and potential barriers. The paper concludes with. a discussion of the implications of these our findings for community formation, diffusion of innovations, emerging drivers and incentives for research practice, and IT systems design
