Cultural evolution developing its own rules: The rise of conservatism and persuasion
In the human sciences, cultural evolution is often viewed as an autonomous process free of genetic influence. A question that follows is, If culture is not influenced by genes, can it take any path? Employing a simple mathematical model of cultural transmission in which individuals may copy each other's traits, we show that cultural evolution favors individuals who are weakly influenced by others and able to influence others. The model suggests that the cultural evolution of rules of cultural transmission tends to create populations that evolve rapidly toward conservatism, and that bias in cultural transmission may result purely from cultural dynamics. Homophily, Cultural Drift and the Co-Evolution of Cultural Groups
In studies of cultural differentiation, the joint mechanisms of homophily and
influence have been able to explain how distinct cultural groups can form.
While these mechanisms normally lead to cultural convergence, increased levels
of heterogeneity can allow them to produce global diversity. However, this
emergent cultural diversity has proven to be unstable in the face of "cultural
drift"- small errors or innovations that allow cultures to change from within.
We develop a model of cultural differentiation that combines the traditional
mechanisms of homophily and influence with a third mechanism of 2network
homophily", in which network structure co-evolves with cultural interaction. We
show that if social ties are allowed to change with cultural influence, a
complex relationship between heterogeneity and cultural diversity is revealed,
in which increased heterogeneity can reduce cultural group formation while
simultaneously increasing social connectedness. Our results show that in
certain regions of the parameter space these co-evolutionary dynamics can lead
to patterns of cultural diversity that are stable in the presence of cultural

The Influence of Cultural Practice on Population of Pea Leafminer (Liriomyza Huidobrensis) and Its Parasitoids in Potato
Pea leafminer (Liriomyza huidobrensis) is the major pest of potato crop in Indonesia. The use of insecticides to control the pest is ineffective and harmful to the natural enemies. The study aimed to find out a promising cultural practice for leafminer management on potato crop. The study was conducted at a farmer's field in Bali in 2004. Potato plants (Granola variety) were grown in a raised-bed plot of 10 m x 1 m. The treatments evaluated were standard cultural practice (C), C plus reflective plastic mulch (RPM) (CM), farmer's practice (F), vermicompost (V), and V plus RPM (VM). All treatments were arranged in RCBD with five replications. From each plot, 10 plant samples were randomly taken to observe the presence of larvae, mines, and adults. Larvae and adults of leafminer and mines were separately counted from the top, middle, and bottom parts of the plant samples. Parasitoids were collected from the infested leaves of the plant samples. Emerged parasitoids were counted and put into vials with 70% ethyl alcohol and then identified. The results showed that the population of adults, larvae of L. huidobrensis, and mines were less in C, CM, V, and VM treatments compared to farmer's practice (F). However, RPM (CM and VM) treatments significantly reduced population of leafminer and mines. The highest population of adults, larvae, and mines on RPM treatment were less than 1.5, 8.5, and 10 per plant, respectively compared to other treatments which were greater than 3.2 for adults, 12.4 for larvae, and 12.7 for mines. Parasitoid population and parasitism level were more in vermicompost treatments (V and VM) compared to other treatments (C, CM, and F). The results showed that application of pesticides was ineffective against leafminer and reduced parasitoid population; in the other hand RPM was effective to control leafminer although the effect on parasitoids was not clear. Parasitoid species that were found associated with potato crop were Hemiptarsenus varicornis, Neochrysocharis sp., and Opius sp. Combination of RPM with standard practice and vermicompost are prospective for leafminer management in potato crop, however, VM is friendlier to environment regarding sustainable agriculture
Measuring and Optimizing Cultural Markets
Social influence has been shown to create significant unpredictability in
cultural markets, providing one potential explanation why experts routinely
fail at predicting commercial success of cultural products. To counteract the
difficulty of making accurate predictions, "measure and react" strategies have
been advocated but finding a concrete strategy that scales for very large
markets has remained elusive so far. Here we propose a "measure and optimize"
strategy based on an optimization policy that uses product quality, appeal, and
social influence to maximize expected profits in the market at each decision
point. Our computational experiments show that our policy leverages social
influence to produce significant performance benefits for the market, while our
theoretical analysis proves that our policy outperforms in expectation any
policy not displaying social information. Our results contrast with earlier
work which focused on showing the unpredictability and inequalities created by
social influence. Not only do we show for the first time that dynamically
showing consumers positive social information under our policy increases the
expected performance of the seller in cultural markets. We also show that, in
reasonable settings, our policy does not introduce significant unpredictability
and identifies "blockbusters". Overall, these results shed new light on the
nature of social influence and how it can be leveraged for the benefits of the
market
Linking personality to cultural intelligence : an interactive effect of openness and agreeableness
The personality trait of openness is generally believed to influence an individual's cultural intelligence, which is an ability to deal effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. This study examines whether a relationship between the two depends on the individual's degree of agreeableness, a personality trait important for building interpersonal relationships. Data collected from 244 international professionals shows that openness is positively related to three facets of cultural intelligence when agreeableness is high, but not when agreeableness is low. The findings suggest that research on personality and cultural intelligence would benefit from an interactive approach, and that assessment, selection and development of international talents should consider personality traits not in isolation, but in concert

Barong is the one of Balinese art culture which is the result of the past experience and sill life until present day. This culture has developed after experienced a cultural contact or siffusion (acculturation) with other culture, especially past Hinduism Culture. Unequivocal that our great-grandfathers have an ability to develop the foreign influence finely and not just accepts or plagiarizes that foreign culture. In other word the Indonesian peoples since Pre Hinduism Culture had has the ability to develop the foreign influence accordance with original natural environment.
In the cultural interaction which occur in our life, we are now directed toward the better, valued, satisfied and happiness future. Indeed, Culture-supporting community could believe regarding the truth and the viability of this culture could be maintained. In such cultural condition, it is necessary to establish communication regarding a value of the past cultural art and the present, and the future
Museum promotion and cultural salience: the agenda of the Athenian Acropolis museum
This case study examines a process of agenda building in the context of cultural organizations. We chose the Acropolis Museum, as a new, emerging cultural organization in the European periphery which engages in public actions, in the form of symbolic initiatives, in order to set a specific cultural agenda for Greek and international media. We scrutinize seven symbolic initiatives publicized by the museum, as attributes that influence media content. We conclude that development of cultural/educational services, advertising and marketing, visitor/customer relations, partnerships, symbolic actions, special events, and supporting services constitute significant cultural attributes, which strategically become a part of the media agenda, thereby contributing toward the building of a museum agenda
