The myth of isolation: Its effect on literary culture and creative writing as a discipline.

    Get PDF
The myth of the writer’s isolation undermines the project of teaching Creative Writing, particularly at PhD level, yet it is an idea that is actively fostered by the structures and often the staff of the institutions that offer creative writing degrees. By abnegating their pedagogic responsibilities, many universities are enforcing a de facto domination of commercial influence, ignoring the wider social functions of Creative Writing practice, and failing to contribute to a literary culture. At a time in which creativity is increasingly focussed on the marketing and sale of ‘product,’ this undermines literary experiment and the non-commercial possibilities for writing. Universities must undermine the pernicious myth of isolation, alter the pedagogical structures which unwittingly foster it, contribute to process centred understandings of Creative Writing, and offer alternative routes to literary recognition and publication

Journeys primarily investigates the interpretation of one form of expression to another; i.e., the visual interpretation of myth through an in terms of the contemporary individual\u27s psychological voyage. The basis for this study comes from the writings of noted scholar Joseph Campbell and others who place myth in the position of the inward, not the outward journey in the quest for human discovery. As Bill Moyers so eloquently states in The Power of Myth. myths are the stories of our search through the ages for truth, for meaning, for significance. We all need to tell our story and to understand our story ... This research project is realized in its final form as a body of creative work for exhibition purposes. It is of significance to note that for artists, the exhibition of creative research parallels the publication of written research in other fields. The project is an outgrowth of my past work and as a logical extension of that work, this investigation demonstrates a relevance to an in a historical context, as well as an exploration of contemporary artistic and intellectual activity

Introspective assertions by artists and scientists about their own idea-generating processes have been influenced by the myth of the creative genius and have contributed, eventually, to the creation of two theoretic positions when looking at the phases of the creative process: one which givesenormous importance to the unconscious, attributing to it complex functions of organisation, combination, and selection; and another which gives great value to conscious processes, as artists or scientists guide their choice throughout the process

Greek Myth on Etruscan Urns from Perusia: the sacrifice of Iphigenia

    Get PDF
The production of cremation urns of Perusia is one of the most important of North Etruria, and many of them were decorated with scenes of myth. The meaning of a myth is strictly related to its social and cultural context. Indeed, the reception of an iconographical theme depends on the specific cultural setting and each society perceives and re-elaborates the same image in different ways. This paper examines the use of the myth of the sacrifice of Iphigenia for the local Etruscan context of the second and first century B.C.E. The representation of that myth enjoyed in Perusia a success that is much greater than in Greek context, revealing the creative approach of the Perusian sculptors and the culture of their patrons

The artistic peculiarities of the transformation of mythological plot about Endymion in the works by Hugh Donald Barclay, Oscar Wilde, Stephen Phillips are investigated. The author reasearches distinguished features of each literary version. Wilde's aestheticism is of peculiar interest. Both Barclay’s and Wilde’s versions create an alternative fate of Endymion in the Victorian society. Phillips’s version is an attempt to revive the ancient Greek original myth in details to acquaint the Victorian readers with the ancient human values. An active creative reconsideration of a mythological material in the context of the national and historical conditions of the Victorian epoch and continuity of the Elizabethan love discourse are considered as basic tendencies of functioning of English poetic endmionada in the XIX-th century

Mythical beasts appear in many forms across multiple cultures throughout human history. Their narratives and visual designs express important beliefs and desires of a given culture. By focusing on the aesthetics and history of the nine-tailed fox, a Chinese mythological, this thesis will explore the constructions and artistic techniques that have given shape to the myth. This thesis will also discuss my thesis project named Classic of Mountains and Seas. The ultimate aim of my creative project has been to develop an animation of new mythical beasts, and this paper situates my creations within the much broader history that has inspired them. As a classic mythical beast, the nine-tailed fox is a popular and culturally significant one in East Asian art and literature. Through out the ages, the nine-tailed fox has been depicted in a large number of artworks across a wide variety of media, including painting, sculpture, fabric, and crafts. Additionally, there is a rich archive of records about the nine-tailed fox, indicating how pervasive this figure has been throughout history. It is precisely because of how its popularity and power have been maintained over such a long period of time that the nine-tailed fox will be regarded as an important reference for my own artistic practice as an animator
