An Improved Algorithm for Eye Corner Detection
In this paper, a modified algorithm for the detection of nasal and temporal
eye corners is presented. The algorithm is a modification of the Santos and
Proenka Method. In the first step, we detect the face and the eyes using
classifiers based on Haar-like features. We then segment out the sclera, from
the detected eye region. From the segmented sclera, we segment out an
approximate eyelid contour. Eye corner candidates are obtained using Harris and
Stephens corner detector. We introduce a post-pruning of the Eye corner
candidates to locate the eye corners, finally. The algorithm has been tested on
Yale, JAFFE databases as well as our created database
Substantial improvements not seen in health behaviors following corner store conversions in two Latino food swamps.
BackgroundThe effectiveness of food retail interventions is largely undetermined, yet substantial investments have been made to improve access to healthy foods in food deserts and swamps via grocery and corner store interventions. This study evaluated the effects of corner store conversions in East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights, California on perceived accessibility of healthy foods, perceptions of corner stores, store patronage, food purchasing, and eating behaviors.MethodsHousehold data (n = 1686) were collected at baseline and 12- to 24-months post-intervention among residents surrounding eight stores, three of which implemented a multi-faceted intervention and five of which were comparisons. Bivariate analyses and logistic and linear regressions were employed to assess differences in time, treatment, and the interaction between time and treatment to determine the effectiveness of this intervention.ResultsImprovements were found in perceived healthy food accessibility and perceptions of corner stores. No changes were found, however, in store patronage, purchasing, or consumption of fruits and vegetables.ConclusionsResults suggest limited effectiveness of food retail interventions on improving health behaviors. Future research should focus on other strategies to reduce community-level obesity
Distinguishing damages from two earthquakes —Archaeoseismology of a Crusader castle (Al-Marqab citadel, Syria)
Damages from two major earthquakes are identified in medieval Al-Marqab citadel (Latin: Margat) in coastal Syria. Built by the Order of St. John (Hospitallers) in the twelfth–thirteenth centuries, the hilltop fortification has masonry walls made with and without mortar, using the opus caementum technology (Roman concrete). V-shaped and U-shaped failures, single-corner and symmetrical corner collapses, and in-plane shifts of ashlar masonry walls are identified and dated by historical and archaeological methods. The azimuth of displacement is NE-SW for the older
damages of the Crusader period (A.D. 1170–1285), possibly related to the A.D. 1202 earthquake. A later, NW-SE displacement occurred during the Muslim period (post-
1285). The 1202 earthquake produced at least VIII intensity on the MSK scale at Al-Marqab, which is higher than previously considered

A Note on Poverty in Kosovo
Kosovo is a war-torn corner of the former Yugoslavia, where a civil war between ethnic Albanians and ethnic Serbs raged during most of the 1990s. NaIrO3 - A pentavalent post-perovskite
Sodium iridium(V) oxide, NaIrO3, was synthesized by a high pressure solid
state method and recovered to ambient conditions. It is found to be
isostructural with CaIrO3, the much-studied structural analogue of the
high-pressure post-perovskite phase of MgSiO3. Among the oxide
post-perovskites, NaIrO3 is the first example with a pentavalent cation. The
structure consists of layers of corner- and edge-sharing IrO6 octahedra
separated by layers of NaO8 bicapped trigonal prisms. NaIrO3 shows no magnetic
ordering and resistivity measurements show non-metallic behavior. The crystal
structure, electrical and magnetic properties are discussed and compared to
