    Cooperative Control with Adaptive Graph Laplacians for Spacecraft Formation Flying

    This paper investigates exact nonlinear dynamics and cooperative control for spacecraft formation flying with Earth oblateness (J2 perturbation) and atmospheric drag effects. The nonlinear dynamics for chief and deputy motions are derived by using Gauss' variational equation and the Euler-Lagrangian formulation, respectively. The proposed cooperative control employs adaptive time-varying Laplacian gains. The tracking and diffusive coupling gains are adapted by the synchronization/tracking errors and distance-based connectivity, thereby defining a time-varying network topology. Moreover, the proposed method relaxes the network structure requirement and permits an unbalanced graph. Nonlinear stability is proven by contraction analysis and incremental input-to-state stability. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Phase Synchronization Control of Robotic Networks on Periodic Ellipses with Adaptive Network Topologies

    This paper presents a novel formation control method for a large number of robots or vehicles described by Euler-Lagrange (EL) systems moving in elliptical orbits. A new coordinate transformation method for phase synchronization of networked EL systems in elliptical trajectories is introduced to define desired formation patterns. The proposed phase synchronization controller synchronizes the motions of agents, thereby yielding a smaller synchronization error than an uncoupled control law in the presence of bounded disturbances. A complex time-varying and switching network topology, constructed by the adaptive graph Laplacian matrix, relaxes the standard requirement of consensus stability, even permitting stabilization on an arbitrary unbalanced graph. The proofs of stability are constructed by robust contraction analysis, a relatively new nonlinear stability tool. An example of reconfiguring swarms of spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit shows the effectiveness of the proposed phase synchronization controller for a large number of complex EL systems moving in elliptical orbits

    Consensus-Based Attitude Maneuver of Multi-spacecraft with Exclusion Constraints

    Some space missions involve cooperative multi-vehicle teams, for such purposes as interferometry and optimal sensor coverage, for example, NASA Terrestrial Planet Finder Mission. Cooperative navigation introduces extra constraints of exclusion zones between the spacecraft to protect them from damaging each other. This is in addition to external exclusion constraints introduced by damaging or blinding celestial objects. This work presents a quaternion-based attitude consensus protocol, using the communication topology of the team of spacecraft. The resulting distributed Laplacians of their communication graph are applied by semidefinite programming (SDP), to synthesize a series of time-varying optimal stochastic matrices. The matrices are used to generate various cooperative attitude maneuvers from the initial attitudes of the spacecraft. Exclusion constraints are satisfied by quaternion-based quadratically constrained attitude control (Q-CAC), where both static and dynamic exclusion zones are identified every time step, expressed as time-varying linear matrix inequalities (LMI) and solved by semidefinite programming

    On Development of 100-Gram-Class Spacecraft for Swarm Applications

    A novel space system architecture is proposed, which would enable 100-g-class spacecraft to be flown as swarms (100 s-1000 s) in low Earth orbit. Swarms of Silicon Wafer Integrated Femtosatellites (SWIFT) present a paradigm-shifting approach to distributed spacecraft development, missions, and applications. Potential applications of SWIFT swarms include sparse aperture arrays and distributed sensor networks. New swarm array configurations are introduced and shown to achieve the effective sparse aperture driven from optical performance metrics. A system cost analysis based on this comparison justifies deploying a large number of femtosatellites for sparse aperture applications. Moreover, this paper discusses promising guidance, control, and navigation methods for swarms of femtosatellites equipped with modest sensing and control capabilities

    Multi-Spacecraft Attitude Path Planning Using Consensus with LMI-Based Exclusion Constraints

    Space missions involving multi-vehicle teams require the cooperative navigation and attitude slewing of the spacecraft or satellites, for such purposes as interferometry and optimal sensor coverage. This introduces extra constraints of exclusion zones between the spacecraft, in addition to the default exclusion constraints already introduced by damaging or blinding celestial objects.
