Binary Multilevel Convolutional Codes with Unequal Error Protection Capabilities
Binary multilevel convolutional codes (CCs) with unequal error protection (UEP) capabilities are studied. These codes belong to the class of generalized concatenated (GC) codes. Binary CCs are used as outer codes. Binary linear block codes of short length, and selected subcodes in their two-way subcode partition chain, are used as inner codes. Multistage decodings are presented that use Viterbi decoders operating on trellises with similar structure to that of the constituent binary CCs. Simulation results of example binary two-level CC\u27s are also reported
Scalable video/image transmission using rate compatible PUM turbo codes
The robust delivery of video over emerging wireless networks poses many challenges due to the heterogeneity of access networks, the variations in streaming devices, and the expected variations in network conditions caused by interference and coexistence. The proposed approach exploits the joint optimization of a wavelet-based scalable video/image coding framework and a forward error correction method based on PUM turbo codes. The scheme minimizes the reconstructed image/video distortion at the decoder subject to a constraint on the overall transmission bitrate budget. The minimization is achieved by exploiting the rate optimization technique and the statistics of the transmission channel
Minimum Distortion Variance Concatenated Block Codes for Embedded Source Transmission
Some state-of-art multimedia source encoders produce embedded source bit
streams that upon the reliable reception of only a fraction of the total bit
stream, the decoder is able reconstruct the source up to a basic quality.
Reliable reception of later source bits gradually improve the reconstruction
quality. Examples include scalable extensions of H.264/AVC and progressive
image coders such as JPEG2000. To provide an efficient protection for embedded
source bit streams, a concatenated block coding scheme using a minimum mean
distortion criterion was considered in the past. Although, the original design
was shown to achieve better mean distortion characteristics than previous
studies, the proposed coding structure was leading to dramatic quality
fluctuations. In this paper, a modification of the original design is first
presented and then the second order statistics of the distortion is taken into
account in the optimization. More specifically, an extension scheme is proposed
using a minimum distortion variance optimization criterion. This robust system
design is tested for an image transmission scenario. Numerical results show
that the proposed extension achieves significantly lower variance than the
original design, while showing similar mean distortion performance using both
convolutional codes and low density parity check codes.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, In Proc. of International Conference on

Turbo-Detected Unequal Protection MPEG-4 Audio Transceiver Using Convolutional Codes, Trellis Coded Modulation and Space-Time Trellis Coding
A jointly optimised turbo transceiver capable of providing unequal error protection is proposed for employment in an MPEG-4 aided audio transceiver. The transceiver advocated consists of Space-Time Trellis Coding (STTC), Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) and two different-rate Non-Systematic Convolutional codes (NSCs) used for unequal error protection. A benchmarker scheme combining STTC and a single-class protection NSC is used for comparison with the proposed scheme. The audio performance of the both schemes is evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. It was found that the proposed unequal protection turbo-transceiver scheme requires about two dBs lower transmit power than the single-class turbo benchmarker scheme in the context of the MPEG-4 audio transceiver, when aiming for an effective throughput of 2 bits/symbol, while exhibiting a similar decoding complexity
Multilevel Coded Modulation for Unequal Error Protection and Multistage DecodingâPart I: Symmetric Constellations
In this paper, theoretical upper bounds and computer simulation results on the error performance of multilevel block coded modulations for unequal error protection (UEP) and multistage decoding are presented. It is shown that nonstandard signal set partitionings and multistage decoding provide excellent UEP capabilities beyond those achievable with conventional coded modulation. The coding scheme is designed in such a way that the most important information bits have a lower error rate than other information bits. The large effective error coefficients, normally associated with standard mapping by set partitioning, are reduced by considering nonstandard partitionings of the underlying signal set. The bits-to-signal mappings induced by these partitionings allow the use of soft-decision decoding of binary block codes. Moreover, parallel operation of some of the staged decoders is possible, to achieve high data rate transmission, so that there is no error propagation between these decoders. Hybrid partitionings are also considered that trade off increased intraset distances in the last partition levels with larger effective error coefficients in the middle partition levels. The error performance of specific examples of multilevel codes over 8-PSK and 64-QAM signal sets are simulated and compared with theoretical upper bounds on the error performance
Turbo-detected unequal protection audio and speech transceivers using serially concatenated convolutional codes, trellis coded modulation and space-time trellis coding
The MPEG-4 TwinVQ audio codec and the AMR-WB speech codec are investigated in the context of a jointly optimised turbo transceiver capable of providing unequal error protection. The transceiver advocated consists of serially concatenated Space-Time Trellis Coding (STTC), Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) and two different-rate Non-Systematic Convolutional codes (NSCs) used for unequal error protection. A benchmarker scheme combining STTC and a single-class protection NSC is used for comparison with the proposed scheme. The audio and speech performance of both schemes is evaluated, when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. An value of about 2.5 (3.5)~dB is required for near-unimpaired audio (speech) transmission, which is about 3.07 (4.2)~dB from the capacity of the system
An Iterative Detection Aided Unequal Error Protection Wavelet Video Scheme Using Irregular Convolutional Codes
A wavelet-based videophone scheme proposed, where the video bits are Unequal Error Protection (UEP) using Irregular Convolutional Codes (IRCCs). The proposed system uses Adaptive Arithmetic Coding (AAC) for encoding the motion vectors and individual wavelet subband coefficients. The turbo equalized IRCC-aided videophone scheme is capable of attaining a near unimpaired video quality for channel Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) in excess of about 4.5dB over a five-path dispersive AWGN channel
Multilevel Block Coded 8-PSK Modulations Using Unequal Error Protection Codes for the Rayleigh Fading Channel
This paper introduces new block coded 8-PSK modulations with unequal error protection (UEP) capabilities for Rayleigh fading channels. The design of efficient block coded modulations (BCM) over 8-PSK signal sets, for the specific purpose of UEP, over Rayleigh fading channels is considered. UEP is desirable in communications systems where part of the source information is more important, or error sensitive, such as the transmission of coded speech and data broadcasting. The proposed block modulation codes are based on the multilevel construction of Imai and Hirakawa (1977). It is shown that the use of binary linear UEP (LUEP) codes as component codes in one or two of the encoding levels provides, in addition to superior UEP capabilities, a higher error performance, at the expense of a very modest reduction in bandwidth efficiency, with respect to conventional multilevel codes. Computer simulation results show that, over a Rayleigh fading channel, a significant improvement in the coding gain is obtained by the use of binary LUEP codes as constituent codes in the multilevel construction
Turbo-Detected Unequal Protection MPEG-4 Wireless Video Telephony using Multi-Level Coding, Trellis Coded Modulation and Space-Time Trellis Coding
Most multimedia source signals are capable of tolerating lossy, rather than lossless delivery to the human eye, ear and other human sensors. The corresponding lossy and preferably low-delay multimedia source codecs however exhibit unequal error sensitivity, which is not the case for Shannonâs ideal entropy codec. This paper proposes a jointly optimised turbo transceiver design capable of providing unequal error protection for MPEG-4 coding aided wireless video telephony. The transceiver investigated consists of space-time trellis coding (STTC) invoked for the sake of mitigating the effects of fading, in addition to bandwidth efficient trellis coded modulation or bit-interleaved coded modulation, combined with a multi-level coding scheme employing either two different-rate non-systematic convolutional codes (NSCs) or two recursive systematic convolutional codes for yielding a twin-class unequal-protection. A single-class protection based benchmark scheme combining STTC and NSC is used for comparison with the unequal-protection scheme advocated. The video performance of the various schemes is evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. It was found that the proposed scheme requires about 2.8 dBs lower transmit power than the benchmark scheme in the context of the MPEG-4 videophone transceiver at a similar decoding complexity
