Spectrum Sharing in Wireless Networks via QoS-Aware Secondary Multicast Beamforming
Secondary spectrum usage has the potential to considerably increase spectrum utilization. In this paper, quality-of-service (QoS)-aware spectrum underlay of a secondary multicast network is considered. A multiantenna secondary access point (AP) is used for multicast (common information) transmission to a number of secondary single-antenna receivers. The idea is that beamforming can be used to steer power towards the secondary receivers while limiting sidelobes that cause interference to primary receivers. Various optimal formulations of beamforming are proposed, motivated by different ldquocohabitationrdquo scenarios, including robust designs that are applicable with inaccurate or limited channel state information at the secondary AP. These formulations are NP-hard computational problems; yet it is shown how convex approximation-based multicast beamforming tools (originally developed without regard to primary interference constraints) can be adapted to work in a spectrum underlay context. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches and provide insights on the tradeoffs between different design criteria
Robust Beamforming for Secrecy Rate in Cooperative Cognitive Radio Multicast Communications
In this paper, we propose a cooperative approach to improve the security of
both primary and secondary systems in cognitive radio multicast communications.
During their access to the frequency spectrum licensed to the primary users,
the secondary unlicensed users assist the primary system in fortifying security
by sending a jamming noise to the eavesdroppers, while simultaneously protect
themselves from eavesdropping. The main objective of this work is to maximize
the secrecy rate of the secondary system, while adhering to all individual
primary users' secrecy rate constraints. In the case of passive eavesdroppers
and imperfect channel state information knowledge at the transceivers, the
utility function of interest is nonconcave and involved constraints are
nonconvex, and thus, the optimal solutions are troublesome. To address this
problem, we propose an iterative algorithm to arrive at a local optimum of the
considered problem. The proposed iterative algorithm is guaranteed to achieve a
Karush-Kuhn-Tucker solution.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, IEEE ICC 201
Phase only transmit beamforming for spectrum sharing microwave systems
This paper deals with the problem of phase-only transmit beamforming in spectrum sharing microwave systems. In contrast to sub-6 GHz schemes, general microwave systems require a large number of antennas due to its huge path loss. As a consequence, digital beamforming needs a large number of computational resources compared to analog beamforming, which only needs a single radio-frequency chain, results the less computational demanding solution. Analog schemes are usually composed by a phase shifter network whose elements transmit at a certain fixed power so that the system designer shall compute the phase values for each element given a set of directions. This approach leads to non-convex quadratic problems where the traditional semidefinite relaxation fails to deliver satisfactory outcomes. In order to solve this, we propose a nonsmooth method that behaves well in several scenarios. Numerical evaluations in different spectrum sharing scenarios, which show the performance of our method, are provided.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Constructive Multiuser Interference in Symbol Level Precoding for the MISO Downlink Channel
This paper investigates the problem of interference among the simultaneous
multiuser transmissions in the downlink of multiple antennas systems. Using
symbol level precoding, a new approach towards the multiuser interference is
discussed along this paper. The concept of exploiting the interference between
the spatial multiuser transmissions by jointly utilizing the data information
(DI) and channel state information (CSI), in order to design symbol-level
precoders, is proposed. In this direction, the interference among the data
streams is transformed under certain conditions to useful signal that can
improve the signal to interference noise ratio (SINR) of the downlink
transmissions. We propose a maximum ratio transmission (MRT) based algorithm
that jointly exploits DI and CSI to glean the benefits from constructive
multiuser interference. Subsequently, a relation between the constructive
interference downlink transmission and physical layer multicasting is
established. In this context, novel constructive interference precoding
techniques that tackle the transmit power minimization (min power) with
individual SINR constraints at each user's receivers is proposed. Furthermore,
fairness through maximizing the weighted minimum SINR (max min SINR) of the
users is addressed by finding the link between the min power and max min SINR
problems. Moreover, heuristic precoding techniques are proposed to tackle the
weighted sum rate problem. Finally, extensive numerical results show that the
proposed schemes outperform other state of the art techniques.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Dynamic Resource Allocation in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Convex Optimization Perspective
This article provides an overview of the state-of-art results on
communication resource allocation over space, time, and frequency for emerging
cognitive radio (CR) wireless networks. Focusing on the
interference-power/interference-temperature (IT) constraint approach for CRs to
protect primary radio transmissions, many new and challenging problems
regarding the design of CR systems are formulated, and some of the
corresponding solutions are shown to be obtainable by restructuring some
classic results known for traditional (non-CR) wireless networks. It is
demonstrated that convex optimization plays an essential role in solving these
problems, in a both rigorous and efficient way. Promising research directions
on interference management for CR and other related multiuser communication
systems are discussed.Comment: to appear in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, special issue on convex

General Rank Multiuser Downlink Beamforming With Shaping Constraints Using Real-valued OSTBC
In this paper we consider optimal multiuser downlink beamforming in the
presence of a massive number of arbitrary quadratic shaping constraints. We
combine beamforming with full-rate high dimensional real-valued orthogonal
space time block coding (OSTBC) to increase the number of beamforming weight
vectors and associated degrees of freedom in the beamformer design. The
original multi-constraint beamforming problem is converted into a convex
optimization problem using semidefinite relaxation (SDR) which can be solved
efficiently. In contrast to conventional (rank-one) beamforming approaches in
which an optimal beamforming solution can be obtained only when the SDR
solution (after rank reduction) exhibits the rank-one property, in our approach
optimality is guaranteed when a rank of eight is not exceeded. We show that our
approach can incorporate up to 79 additional shaping constraints for which an
optimal beamforming solution is guaranteed as compared to a maximum of two
additional constraints that bound the conventional rank-one downlink
beamforming designs. Simulation results demonstrate the flexibility of our
proposed beamformer design
