A unifying representation for a class of dependent random measures
We present a general construction for dependent random measures based on
thinning Poisson processes on an augmented space. The framework is not
restricted to dependent versions of a specific nonparametric model, but can be
applied to all models that can be represented using completely random measures.
Several existing dependent random measures can be seen as specific cases of
this framework. Interesting properties of the resulting measures are derived
and the efficacy of the framework is demonstrated by constructing a
covariate-dependent latent feature model and topic model that obtain superior
predictive performance
Symbol Emergence in Robotics: A Survey
Humans can learn the use of language through physical interaction with their
environment and semiotic communication with other people. It is very important
to obtain a computational understanding of how humans can form a symbol system
and obtain semiotic skills through their autonomous mental development.
Recently, many studies have been conducted on the construction of robotic
systems and machine-learning methods that can learn the use of language through
embodied multimodal interaction with their environment and other systems.
Understanding human social interactions and developing a robot that can
smoothly communicate with human users in the long term, requires an
understanding of the dynamics of symbol systems and is crucially important. The
embodied cognition and social interaction of participants gradually change a
symbol system in a constructive manner. In this paper, we introduce a field of
research called symbol emergence in robotics (SER). SER is a constructive
approach towards an emergent symbol system. The emergent symbol system is
socially self-organized through both semiotic communications and physical
interactions with autonomous cognitive developmental agents, i.e., humans and
developmental robots. Specifically, we describe some state-of-art research
topics concerning SER, e.g., multimodal categorization, word discovery, and a
double articulation analysis, that enable a robot to obtain words and their
embodied meanings from raw sensory--motor information, including visual
information, haptic information, auditory information, and acoustic speech
signals, in a totally unsupervised manner. Finally, we suggest future

Out of equilibrium dynamics of classical and quantum complex systems
Equilibrium is a rather ideal situation, the exception rather than the rule
in Nature. Whenever the external or internal parameters of a physical system
are varied its subsequent relaxation to equilibrium may be either impossible or
take very long times. From the point of view of fundamental physics no generic
principle such as the ones of thermodynamics allows us to fully understand
their behaviour. The alternative is to treat each case separately. It is
illusionary to attempt to give, at least at this stage, a complete description
of all non-equilibrium situations. Still, one can try to identify and
characterise some concrete but still general features of a class of out of
equilibrium problems - yet to be identified - and search for a unified
description of these. In this report I briefly describe the behaviour and
theory of a set of non-equilibrium systems and I try to highlight common

Learning from medical data streams: an introduction
Clinical practice and research are facing a new challenge created by the rapid growth of health information science and technology, and the complexity and volume of biomedical data. Machine learning from medical data streams is a recent area of research that aims to provide better knowledge extraction and evidence-based clinical decision support in scenarios where data are produced as a continuous flow. This year's edition of AIME, the Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, enabled the sound discussion of this area of research, mainly by the inclusion of a dedicated workshop.
