Context-aware Synthesis for Video Frame Interpolation
Video frame interpolation algorithms typically estimate optical flow or its
variations and then use it to guide the synthesis of an intermediate frame
between two consecutive original frames. To handle challenges like occlusion,
bidirectional flow between the two input frames is often estimated and used to
warp and blend the input frames. However, how to effectively blend the two
warped frames still remains a challenging problem. This paper presents a
context-aware synthesis approach that warps not only the input frames but also
their pixel-wise contextual information and uses them to interpolate a
high-quality intermediate frame. Specifically, we first use a pre-trained
neural network to extract per-pixel contextual information for input frames. We
then employ a state-of-the-art optical flow algorithm to estimate bidirectional
flow between them and pre-warp both input frames and their context maps.
Finally, unlike common approaches that blend the pre-warped frames, our method
feeds them and their context maps to a video frame synthesis neural network to
produce the interpolated frame in a context-aware fashion. Our neural network
is fully convolutional and is trained end to end. Our experiments show that our
method can handle challenging scenarios such as occlusion and large motion and
outperforms representative state-of-the-art approaches.Comment: CVPR 2018, http://graphics.cs.pdx.edu/project/ctxsy
Synthesis of porous silicates
The issues of importance and future concern in the synthesis of porous silicates and porous materials that contain a large fraction of silica, e.g. zeolites and other crystalline molecular sieves, are reviewed. The thermodynamics of zeolite synthesis are discussed, including a detailed thermodynamic analysis of the synthesis of pure-silica ZSM-5. The kinetics of porous silicate synthesis are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the control of porous structure formation through the use of organic structure-directing agents. Ordered mesoporous materials are discussed in the context of distinguishing their features from zeolites in order to describe further the unique properties of each class of material. Finally, several unresolved issues in the understanding of the synthesis process are outlined, the resolutions of which would aid in the synthesis of porous silicates by design
Key Lessons from the Field of Cultural Innovation
The primary purpose of this knowledge synthesis is to provide the Rockefeller Foundation staff with a broader context for considering the findings of an independent evaluation of the Foundation's Cultural Innovation Fund (CIF). The synthesis has been designed to help key audiences understand the state of play, common concepts, challenges, questions, and key lessons from arts organizations who are already engaging innovative strategies and practices
Compositional synthesis of maximally permissive supervisors using supervision equivalence
This paper presents a general framework for efficient synthesis of supervisors for discrete event systems. The approach is based on compositional minimisation, using concepts of process equivalence. In this context, a large number of ways are suggested how a finite-state automaton can be simplified such that the results of supervisor synthesis are preserved. The proposed approach yields a compact representation of a least restrictive supervisor that ensures controllability and nonblocking. The method is demonstrated on a simple manufacturing example to significantly reduce the number of states constructed for supervisor synthesis
Design, Concepts and Applications of Electromagnetic Metasurfaces
The paper overviews our recent work on the synthesis of metasurfaces and
related concepts and applications. The synthesis is based on generalized sheet
transition conditions (GSTCs) with a bianisotropic surface susceptibility
tensor model of the metasurface structure. We first place metasurfaces in a
proper historical context and describe the GSTC technique with some fundamental
susceptibility tensor considerations. Upon this basis, we next provide an
in-depth development of our susceptibility-GSTC synthesis technique. Finally,
we present five recent metasurface concepts and applications, which cover the
topics of birefringent transformations, bianisotropic refraction, light
emission enhancement, remote spatial processing and nonlinear second-harmonic
generation
