Connecting the dots: information visualization and text analysis of the Searchlight Project newsletters
This report is the product of the Pardee Center’s work on the Searchlight:Visualization and Analysis of Trend Data project sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Part of a larger effort to analyze and disseminate on-the-ground information about important societal trends as reported in a large number of regional newsletters developed in Asia, Africa and the Americas specifically for the Foundation, the Pardee Center developed sophisticated methods to systematically review, categorize, analyze, visualize, and draw conclusions from the information in the newsletters. The Rockefeller Foundatio
Keystones to foster inclusive knowledge societies: access to information and knowledge, freedom of expression, privacy, and ethics on a global internet
The transnational and multi-dimensional nature of Cyberspace and its growing importance presents new frontiers with unparalleled opportunities and challenges for access to information and knowledge, freedom of expression, privacy and ethics.
The Internet Study being undertaken by UNESCO is seeking to provide the necessary clarity to support holistic approaches to addressing this broad range of interrelated issues as well as their short and long-term effects.
The study was built on a year-long multistakeholder consultation process, which involved several rounds of consultation with member states and other actors, as well as almost 200 major responses to an online questionnaire. The Study includes the Options for future actions of UNESCO in the Internet related issues, which has served as a basis for the Outcome Document as adopted by the CONNECTing the Dots Conference on 3 and 4 March 2015.
The Study also affirmed that the same rights that people have offline must be protected online, and good practices are shared between Member States and other stakeholders, in order to address security and privacy concerns on the Internet and in accordance with international human rights obligations. The Study also supports the Internet Universality principles (R.O.A.M) that promote a human rights-based approach, including freedom of expression, privacy, open Internet, accessible to all and characterized by multistakeholder participation

General scores for accessibility and inequality measures in urban areas
In the last decades, the acceleration of urban growth has led to an
unprecedented level of urban interactions and interdependence. This situation
calls for a significant effort among the scientific community to come up with
engaging and meaningful visualizations and accessible scenario simulation
engines. The present paper gives a contribution in this direction by providing
general methods to evaluate accessibility in cities based on public
transportation data. Through the notion of isochrones, the accessibility
quantities proposed measure the performance of transport systems at connecting
places and people in urban systems. Then we introduce scores rank cities
according to their overall accessibility. We highlight significant inequalities
in the distribution of these measures across the population, which are found to
be strikingly similar across various urban environments. Our results are
released through the interactive platform: www.citychrone.org, aimed at
providing the community at large with a useful tool for awareness and
decision-making
Multi-Level Modeling of Quotation Families Morphogenesis
This paper investigates cultural dynamics in social media by examining the
proliferation and diversification of clearly-cut pieces of content: quoted
texts. In line with the pioneering work of Leskovec et al. and Simmons et al.
on memes dynamics we investigate in deep the transformations that quotations
published online undergo during their diffusion. We deliberately put aside the
structure of the social network as well as the dynamical patterns pertaining to
the diffusion process to focus on the way quotations are changed, how often
they are modified and how these changes shape more or less diverse families and
sub-families of quotations. Following a biological metaphor, we try to
understand in which way mutations can transform quotations at different scales
and how mutation rates depend on various properties of the quotations.Comment: Published in the Proceedings of the ASE/IEEE 4th Intl. Conf. on
