    Optimized network structure and routing metric in wireless multihop ad hoc communication

    Inspired by the Statistical Physics of complex networks, wireless multihop ad hoc communication networks are considered in abstracted form. Since such engineered networks are able to modify their structure via topology control, we search for optimized network structures, which maximize the end-to-end throughput performance. A modified version of betweenness centrality is introduced and shown to be very relevant for the respective modeling. The calculated optimized network structures lead to a significant increase of the end-to-end throughput. The discussion of the resulting structural properties reveals that it will be almost impossible to construct these optimized topologies in a technologically efficient distributive manner. However, the modified betweenness centrality also allows to propose a new routing metric for the end-to-end communication traffic. This approach leads to an even larger increase of throughput capacity and is easily implementable in a technologically relevant manner.Comment: 25 pages, v2: fixed one small typo in the 'authors' fiel

    Mobility modeling and management for next generation wireless networks

    Mobility modeling and management in wireless networks are the set of tasks performed in order to model motion patterns, predict trajectories, get information on mobiles\u27 whereabouts and to make use of this information in handoff, routing, location management, resource allocation and other functions. In the literature, the speed of mobile is often and misleadingly referred to as the level of mobility, such as high or low mobility. This dissertation presents an information theoretic approach to mobility modeling and management, in which mobility is considered as a measure of uncertainty in mobile\u27s trajectory, that is, the mobility is low if the trajectory of a mobile is highly predictable even if the mobile is moving with high speed. On the other hand, the mobility is high if the trajectory of the mobile is highly erratic. Based on this mobility modeling concept, we classify mobiles into predictable and non-predictable mobility classes and optimize network operations for each mobility class. The dynamic mobility classification technique is applied to various mobility related issues of the next generation wireless networks such as location management, location-based services, and energy efficient routing in multihop cellular networks

    A survey on wireless ad hoc networks

    A wireless ad hoc network is a collection of wireless nodes that can dynamically self-organize into an arbitrary and temporary topology to form a network without necessarily using any pre-existing infrastructure. These characteristics make ad hoc networks well suited for military activities, emergency operations, and disaster recoveries. Nevertheless, as electronic devices are getting smaller, cheaper, and more powerful, the mobile market is rapidly growing and, as a consequence, the need of seamlessly internetworking people and devices becomes mandatory. New wireless technologies enable easy deployment of commercial applications for ad hoc networks. The design of an ad hoc network has to take into account several interesting and difficult problems due to noisy, limited-range, and insecure wireless transmissions added to mobility and energy constraints. This paper presents an overview of issues related to medium access control (MAC), routing, and transport in wireless ad hoc networks and techniques proposed to improve the performance of protocols.     Channel Allocation in An Overlaid Mesh Network

    In spite of recent advancement of Wireless Mesh Technology, a lot of research challenges remained to be solved to extract the full capacity of this modern technology. As 802.11a/b/g standards make available the use of multi radio multi channel in a wireless node, a lot of research activities are going on to efficiently allocate the channel of a Mesh Network to boost its overall performances. In this research, the prospect of dividing the total network area into two non-overlapping channels of a given Mesh Network is investigated and analyzed numerically. It is found that the throughput is doubled as well as the fairness improves considerably if we deploy two channels instead of single channel backbone. An extensive simulation study has been carried out to find the optimum coverage area between two channels.     Computational Intelligence Inspired Data Delivery for Vehicle-to-Roadside Communications

    We propose a vehicle-to-roadside communication protocol based on distributed clustering where a coalitional game approach is used to stimulate the vehicles to join a cluster, and a fuzzy logic algorithm is employed to generate stable clusters by considering multiple metrics of vehicle velocity, moving pattern, and signal qualities between vehicles. A reinforcement learning algorithm with game theory based reward allocation is employed to guide each vehicle to select the route that can maximize the whole network performance. The protocol is integrated with a multi-hop data delivery virtualization scheme that works on the top of the transport layer and provides high performance for multi-hop end-to-end data transmissions. We conduct realistic computer simulations to show the performance advantage of the protocol over other approaches
