Displacement and the Humanities: Manifestos from the Ancient to the Present

Seeking to provoke a discourse around displacement within and beyond the field of Humanities, it positions historical cases and debates, some reaching into the ancient past, within diverse geo-chronological contexts and current world urgencies. In adopting an innovative dialogic structure, between practitioners on the ground - from architects and urban planners to artists - and academics working across subject areas, the volume is a proposition to: remap priorities for current research agendas; open up disciplines, critically analysing their approaches; address the socio-political responsibilities that we have as scholars and practitioners; and provide an alternative site of discourse for contemporary concerns about displacement. Ultimately, this volume aims to provoke future work and collaborations - hence, manifestos - not only in the historical and literary fields, but wider research concerned with human mobility and the challenges confronting people who are out of place of rights, protection and belonging
Second-Person Surveillance: Politics of User Implication in Digital Documentaries
This dissertation analyzes digital documentaries that utilize second-person address and roleplay to make users feel implicated in contemporary refugee crises, mass incarceration in the U.S., and state and corporate surveillances. Digital documentaries are seemingly more interactive and participatory than linear film and video documentary as they are comprised of a variety of auditory, visual, and written media, utilize networked technologies, and turn the documentary audience into a documentary user. I draw on scholarship from documentary, game, new media, and surveillance studies to analyze how second-person address in digital documentaries is configured through user positioning and direct address within the works themselves, in how organizations and creators frame their productions, and in how users and players respond in reviews, discussion forums, and Letâs Plays. I build on Michael Rothbergâs theorization of the implicated subject to explore how these digital documentaries bring the user into complicated relationality with national and international crises. Visually and experientially implying that users bear responsibility to the subjects and subject matter, these works can, on the one hand, replicate modes of liberal empathy for suffering, distant âothersâ and, on the other, simulate oneâs own surveillant modes of observation or behavior to mirror it back to users and open up oneâs offline thoughts and actions as a site of critique.
This dissertation charts how second-person address shapes and limits the political potentialities of documentary projects and connects them to a lineage of direct address from educational and propaganda films, museum exhibits, and serious games. By centralizing the userâs individual experience, the interventions that second-person digital documentaries can make into social discourse change from public, institution-based education to more privatized forms of sentimental education geared toward personal edification and self-realization. Unless tied to larger initiatives or movements, I argue that digital documentaries reaffirm a neoliberal politics of individual self-regulation and governance instead of public education or collective, social intervention.
Chapter one focuses on 360-degree virtual reality (VR) documentaries that utilize the feeling of presence to position users as if among refugees and as witnesses to refugee experiences in camps outside of Europe and various dwellings in European cities. My analysis of Clouds Over Sidra (Gabo Arora and Chris Milk 2015) and The Displaced (Imraan Ismail and Ben C. Solomon 2015) shows how these VR documentaries utilize observational realism to make believable and immersive their representations of already empathetic refugees. The empathetic refugee is often young, vulnerable, depoliticized and dehistoricized and is a well-known trope in other forms of humanitarian media that continues into VR documentaries. Forced to Flee (Zahra Rasool 2017), I am Rohingya (Zahra Rasool 2017), So Leben FlĂŒchtlinge in Berlin (Berliner Morgenpost 2017), and Limbo: A Virtual Experience of Waiting for Asylum (Shehani Fernando 2017) disrupt easy immersions into realistic-looking VR experiences of stereotyped representations and user identifications and, instead, can reflect back the userâs political inaction and surveillant modes of looking.
Chapter two analyzes web- and social media messenger-based documentaries that position users as outsiders to U.S. mass incarceration. Users are noir-style co-investigators into the crime of the prison-industrial complex in Fremont County, Colorado in Prison Valley: The Prison Industry (David Dufresne and Philippe Brault 2009) and co-riders on a bus transporting prison inmatesâ loved ones for visitations to correctional facilities in Upstate New York in A Temporary Contact (Nirit Peled and Sara Kolster 2017). Both projects construct an experience of carceral constraint for users to reinscribe seeming âoutsideâ places, people, and experiences as within the continuation of the racialized and classed politics of state control through mass incarceration. These projects utilize interfaces that create a tension between replicating an exploitative hierarchy between non-incarcerated users and those subject to mass incarceration while also de-immersing users in these experiences to mirror back the userâs supposed distance from this mode of state regulation.
Chapter three investigates a type of digital game I term dataveillance simulation games, which position users as surveillance agents in ambiguously dystopian nation-states and force users to use their own critical thinking and judgment to construct the criminality of state-sanctioned surveillance targets. Project Perfect Citizen (Bad Cop Studios 2016), Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You (Osmotic Studios 2016), and Papers, Please (Lucas Pope 2013) all create a dual empathy: players empathize with bureaucratic surveillance agents while empathizing with surveillance targets whose emails, text messages, documents, and social media profiles reveal them to be ânormalâ people. I argue that while these games show criminality to be a construct, they also utilize a racialized fear of the loss of oneâs individual privacy to make players feel like they too could be surveillance targets.
Chapter four examines personalized digital documentaries that turn users and their data into the subject matter. Do Not Track (Brett Gaylor 2015), A Week with Wanda (Joe Derry Hall 2019), Stealing Ur Feelings (Noah Levenson 2019), Alfred Premium (JoĂ«l Ronez, Pierre Corbinais, and Ămilie F. Grenier 2019), How They Watch You (Nick Briz 2021), and Fairly Intelligentâą (A.M. Darke 2021) track, monitor, and confront users with their own online behavior to reflect back a corporate surveillance that collects, analyzes, and exploits user data for profit. These digital documentaries utilize emotional fear- and humor-based appeals to persuade users that these technologies are controlling them, shaping their desires and needs, and dehumanizing them through algorithmic surveillance
Deep learning methods applied to digital elevation models: state of the art
Deep Learning (DL) has a wide variety of applications in various
thematic domains, including spatial information. Although with
limitations, it is also starting to be considered in operations
related to Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). This study aims to
review the methods of DL applied in the field of altimetric spatial
information in general, and DEMs in particular. Void Filling (VF),
Super-Resolution (SR), landform classification and hydrography
extraction are just some of the operations where traditional methods
are being replaced by DL methods. Our review concludes
that although these methods have great potential, there are
aspects that need to be improved. More appropriate terrain information
or algorithm parameterisation are some of the challenges

Hydroecological connectivity as a normative framework for aquatic ecosystem regulation: lessons from the USA
Very little has been achieved during the first five decades of development and application of what is now known as environmental law, in terms of slowing the global rate of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. A major factor in this lack of effectiveness has been, perhaps, too narrow a focus on individual elements that exist within ecosystems, rather than on the health of the ecosystems themselves. Additionally, very little attention has been paid to maintenance of the integrity of the many types of connections that exist between the different components of ecosystems, notably aquatic ecosystems. These components are connected not only by water, but also by a variety of ecological connections and pathways Ÿ here termed 'hydroecological connectivity' (HEC). These connections are not only important in terms of providing abiotic and biota corridors between components, but they also act as conduits which can translocate pollutants from one location, over vast distances, throughout a fluvial ecosystem, consequently impacting virtually all areas of human life and nature. This thesis outlines the science underpinning the first connectivity-based water law regulation, the American Clean Water Rule (CWR) and analyzes a set of legal challenges to this Rule. Barring one instance, no substantive merit was found for any of the disputed claims. Furthermore, this thesis identifies the transferability of the Rule to South Africa. It was possible to empirically substantiate the merit of the single instance that lacked appropriate qualification in the CWR. The importance of HEC is elucidated in this work using the example of headwater streams which, in aggregate, comprise 79 per cent of the aggregate length of the mapped rivers in South Africa. Also provisionally evaluated is a brightline distance, lateral to fluvial watercourses, within which water resource components that are likely to be connected to the mainstem will be found. This provides a guideline for HEC-directed administrative decision making. A connectivity-based approach to water resource governance will require limitations on some land uses on portions of land that is likely to be perceived as terrestrial but which, in fact, forms part of an aquatic ecosystem. This requirement raises obvious implications for property ownership and expropriation. Here the principles of the public trust, already legislatively expressed in South African water law, provide an institutional legal framework that renders 'public' any lands which form part and parcel of the integrity an aquatic ecosystem. The public trust doctrine anchored the reform of the post-apartheid water law of South Africa. It was introduced in a transformative and emancipatory approach to the democratisation of the nation's water resources and the restoration of water equity. This work provides the first historico-legal and comprehensive perspective of the genealogy and intentions for, the public trust in South Africa, and distils out the principles which the trust embodies. An example protocol is developed which shows how the trust principles underpin the formulation of guidance for determinations of beneficial water uses. Recommendations are made regarding the operationalization of the currently moribund South African public trust in water and highlights the role of the public trust as an effective and reformatory tool of water law. In summary this work is a translational and transdisciplinary example of aquatic science into environmental law. The complex and challenging concept of HEC is communicated in plain language and then its perceived weak point Ÿ the need to isolate areas of land which form part of the aquatic resource and incorporate these within the trust res Ÿ is construed using the principles of the public trust doctrine. Simultaneously the potential of the public trust to offset obstacles to environmental protection, such as the need for reformed guidance for administrative decision making, has been highlighted. On this model the public trust enfolds an ecosystem-directed HEC approach into a transformative and normative governance package which is integrative, adaptive, multi-disciplinary and proactive
Postmodern Classicism: A Practice-Based Investigation
This thesis establishes a critical framework for a grassroots literary genre, postmodern classicism (pomoclassicism), which was founded by myself and Stephen Spencer II circa 2010. Postmodernism here signifies the intellectual and cultural concerns which were tantamount at the latter half of the twentieth century, and by extension, classical writing simply refers to that which was apparently before the postmodern, in a heuristic sliding scale oriented around canonicity and nostalgia. A portfolio of creative writing accompanies critical efforts at engaging with and describing the foundational assumptions of the western canon, from which much of the creative work is appropriated. My research writing is grounded in a reformulation of the early modern notion of canonical literature (circa 1700): âeternal lifeâ through literary preservation, which is itself the paradoxical material upon which the âcanonâ is founded. This theme is taken up in the oeuvre of Goethe. Goetheâs writing relies on the paradoxical reconciliation of opposites known to the author as âpolarity, â and influences how Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Franz Kafka understand canonical literature itself. Goethe, Nietzsche, and Kafkaâs use of appropriation has influenced my own creative work, which includes redaction writing, erasure, and other forms of narrative appropriation. Kafka will be shown to have taken up the theme of âpolarityâ in his own literary writing, as examined by Benjamin and Deleuze and Guattari. Finally, I will draw upon the critical writing of Sabina Spielrein, whose concepts of simultaneous creation and destruction and erotic fusion are the conceptual core of my own poetic approach, and who provides a Nietzschean critique of the early modern notion of âeternity.
The Politics of Asceticism: An Analysis of the Political Spirituality of the Imperial Stoics
In recent decades a renewed focus on the Hellenistic and Roman philosophies has rehabilitated the practical aspect of ancient philosophy. This aspect of philosophy has continued to be part of the philosophical discipline but it has often been surpassed in importance and appreciation by philosophyâs theoretical discourse. With the increased focus on ancient philosophyâs practical outlook, an interesting question emerges: what does this practical outlook entail regarding how we interpret and analyse the political philosophy and political praxis of the ancient philosophers? In order to examine this question, this dissertation sheds light on Imperial Stoicism and examines this group of philosophersâ political philosophy in view of the concept of âpolitical spirituality.â The often-reiterated interpretation of Imperial Stoicism is that these philosophers were either entirely apolitical or that they, unlike their Hellenistic predecessors, were markedly conservative, reactionary, and generally supported the status quo of society despite an apparent subversive veneer. Both these interpretations are significantly questioned in this dissertation

Sonic heritage: listening to the past
History is so often told through objects, images and photographs, but the potential of sounds to reveal place and space is often neglected. Our research project âSonic Palimpsestâ1 explores the potential of sound to evoke impressions and new understandings of the past, to embrace the sonic as a tool to understand what was, in a way that can complement and add to our predominant visual understandings. Our work includes the expansion of the Oral History archives held at Chatham Dockyard to include womenâs voices and experiences, and the creation of sonic works to engage the public with their heritage. Our research highlights the social and cultural value of oral history and field recordings in the transmission of knowledge to both researchers and the public. Together these recordings document how buildings and spaces within the dockyard were used and experienced by those who worked there. We can begin to understand the social and cultural roles of these buildings within the community, both past and present
The mad manifesto
The âmad manifestoâ project is a multidisciplinary mediated investigation into the circumstances by which mad (mentally ill, neurodivergent) or disabled (disclosed, undisclosed) students faced far more precarious circumstances with inadequate support models while attending North American universities during the pandemic teaching era (2020-2023).
Using a combination of âemergency remote teachingâ archival materials such as national student datasets, universal design for learning (UDL) training models, digital classroom teaching experiments, university budgetary releases, educational technology coursewares, and lived experience expertise, this dissertation carefully retells the story of âaccessibilityâ as it transpired in disabling classroom containers trapped within intentionally underprepared crisis superstructures. Using rhetorical models derived from critical disability studies, mad studies, social work practice, and health humanities, it then suggests radically collaborative UDL teaching practices that may better pre-empt the dynamic needs of dis/abled students whose needs remain direly underserviced.
The manifesto leaves the reader with discrete calls to action that foster more critical performances of intersectionally inclusive UDL classrooms for North American mad students, which it calls âmad-positiveâ facilitation techniques:
1. Seek to untie the bond that regards the digital divide and access as synonyms.
2. UDL practice requires an environment shift that prioritizes change potential.
3. Advocate against the usage of UDL as a for-all keystone of accessibility.
4. Refuse or reduce the use of technologies whose primary mandate is dataveillance.
5. Remind students and allies that university space is a non-neutral affective container.
6. Operationalize the tracking of student suicides on your home campus.
7. Seek out physical & affectual ways that your campus is harming social capital potential.
8. Revise policies and practices that are ability-adjacent imaginings of access.
9. Eliminate sanist and neuroscientific languaging from how you speak about students.
10. Vigilantly interrogate how ânormalâ and âbelongâ are socially constructed.
11. Treat lived experience expertise as a gift, not a resource to mine and to spend.
12. Create non-psychiatric routes of receiving accommodation requests in your classroom.
13. Seek out uncomfortable stories of mad exclusion and consider carceral logicâs role in it.
14. Center madness in inclusive methodologies designed to explicitly resist carceral logics.
15. Create counteraffectual classrooms that anticipate and interrupt kairotic spatial power.
16. Strive to refuse comfort and immediate intelligibility as mandatory classroom presences.
17. Create pathways that empower cozy space understandings of classroom practice.
18. Vector students wherever possible as dynamic ability constellations in assessment
