CIHA as the Subject of Art Theory: The Methodological Discourse in the International Congresses of Art History from Post-War Years to the 2000s
The twofold politics of psychiatry: Ernst Rüdin and the German delegation at the International Congress of Child Psychiatry in Paris, 1937
At the First International Congress of Child Psychiatry held in Paris in 1937, the German delegation was led by Ernst Rüdin, a fervent eugenicist, and president of the Society of German Neurologists and Psychiatrists (GDNP). Rüdin had a twofold political agenda: on the one hand, he acted beyond the medical community in the broader framework of German foreign policy which aimed at the expansion of Germany’s international reputation. On the other hand, he sought to secure the core claims of the GDNP as a professional body. It was his aim to integrate the newly emerging field of child psychiatry firmly into the broader field of psychiatry and neurology. The article reconstructs the politico-legal ramifications within which German physicians acted when attending professional conferences abroad and the broader context of the international congresses in Paris in 1937. Finally, it describes the impact of these contexts on the lectures of the German delegates.
Visitors to the International Penitentiary Congress: A Transnational Platform Dealing with Penitentiary Care
This contribution looks at foreign visitors and organisers of a selection of penitentiary congress sessions between 1880 and 1910. Using lists of members from the congress proceedings, it seeks to assess the relative importance of civil society and governmental visitors at the penitentiary congress sessions, seen as an emerging expert plat- form of private and public stakeholders in social welfare. Several empirical approaches towards a clear division between public and private stakeholders are presented, experimentally using networking-, named entity recognition- and visualisation techniques. The article argues that in the historical context of the penitentiary congress a clear antithetical division of public and private stakeholders is difficult to sustain. Instead it proposes a more dynamic characterisation of the penitentiary congress visitors where, gradually by the turn of the century, elements of the philanthropic and governmental merge into the hybrid type of the all-round penitentiary expert, well connected to governmental circles and well-versed in philanthropic considerations. This contribution looks at foreign visitors and organisers of a selection of penitentiary congress sessions between 1880 and 1910.
