    Concept coupling learning for improving concept lattice-based document retrieval

    © 2017 Elsevier Ltd The semantic information in any document collection is critical for query understanding in information retrieval. Existing concept lattice-based retrieval systems mainly rely on the partial order relation of formal concepts to index documents. However, the methods used by these systems often ignore the explicit semantic information between the formal concepts extracted from the collection. In this paper, a concept coupling relationship analysis model is proposed to learn and aggregate the intra- and inter-concept coupling relationships. The intra-concept coupling relationship employs the common terms of formal concepts to describe the explicit semantics of formal concepts. The inter-concept coupling relationship adopts the partial order relation of formal concepts to capture the implicit dependency of formal concepts. Based on the concept coupling relationship analysis model, we propose a concept lattice-based retrieval framework. This framework represents user queries and documents in a concept space based on fuzzy formal concept analysis, utilizes a concept lattice as a semantic index to organize documents, and ranks documents with respect to the learned concept coupling relationships. Experiments are performed on the text collections acquired from the SMART information retrieval system. Compared with classic concept lattice-based retrieval methods, our proposed method achieves at least 9%, 8% and 15% improvement in terms of average MAP, IAP@11 and P@10 respectively on all the collections

The area came into being in the early 1980s and has since then spawned over 10000 scientific publications and a variety of practically deployed tools. FCA allows one to build from a data table with objects in rows and attributes in columns a taxonomic data structure called concept lattice, which can be used for many purposes, especially for Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval.     First Elements on Knowledge Discovery guided by Domain Knowledge (KDDK)

    International audienceIn this paper, we present research trends carried out in the Orpailleur team at Loria, showing how knowledge discovery and knowledge processing may be combined. The knowledge discovery in databases process (KDD) consists in processing a huge volume of data for extracting significant and reusable knowledge units. From a knowledge representation perspective, the KDD process may take advantage of domain knowledge embedded in ontologies relative to the domain of data, leading to the notion of ''knowledge discovery guided by domain knowledge'' or KDDK. The KDDK process is based on the classification process (and its multiple forms), e.g. for modeling, representing, reasoning, and discovering. Some applications are detailed, showing how KDDK can be instantiated in an application domain. Finally, an architecture of an integrated KDDK system is proposed and discussed

    A Hybrid Model for Document Retrieval Systems.

    A methodology for the design of document retrieval systems is presented. First, a composite index term weighting model is developed based on term frequency statistics, including document frequency, relative frequency within document and relative frequency within collection, which can be adjusted by selecting various coefficients to fit into different indexing environments. Then, a composite retrieval model is proposed to process a user\u27s information request in a weighted Phrase-Oriented Fixed-Level Expression (POFLE), which may apply more than Boolean operators, through two phases. That is, we have a search for documents which are topically relevant to the information request by means of a descriptor matching mechanism, which incorporate a partial matching facility based on a structurally-restricted relationship imposed by indexing model, and is more general than matching functions of the traditional Boolean model and vector space model, and then we have a ranking of these topically relevant documents, by means of two types of heuristic-based selection rules and a knowledge-based evaluation function, in descending order of a preference score which predicts the combined effect of user preference for quality, recency, fitness and reachability of documents

    This document describes the progress and plans of the Artificial Intelligence Research Branch (RIA) at ARC in 1990. Activities span a range from basic scientific research to engineering development and to fielded NASA applications, particularly those applications that are enabled by basic research carried out at RIA. Work is conducted in-house and through collaborative partners in academia and industry. Our major focus is on a limited number of research themes with a dual commitment to technical excellence and proven applicability to NASA short, medium, and long-term problems.
