Soviet Space Stations as Analogs, Second Edition
The available literature that discusses the various aspects of the Soviet Salyut 6 and Salyut 7 space staions are examined as related to human productivity. The methodology for this analog was a search of unclassified literature. Additional information was obtained in interviews with the cosmonauts and some Soviet space personnel. Topics include: general layout and design of the spacecraft system; cosmonauts role in maintenance and repair; general layout and design of the Mir complex; effects of the environment on personnel; information and computer systems; organization systems; personality systems; and physical conditin of the cosmonaut
Adaptive Optimal Control of MapReduce Performance, Availability and Costs
International audienceMapReduce is a popular programming model for distributed data processing and Big Data applications running on clouds. Extensive research has been conducted either to improve the dependability or to increase performance of MapReduce, ranging from adaptive and on-demand fault-tolerance solutions, adaptive task scheduling techniques to optimized job execution mechanisms. This paper investigates an optimization-based solution to control MapReduce systems in order to provide guarantees in terms of both performance and availability while reducing utilization costs. We follow a control theoretical approach for MapReduce cluster scaling and admission control. Moreover, we aim to be robust to changes in MapRe-duce and in it's environment by adapting the controller online to those changes. This paper highlights the major challenges of combining system adaptation and optimal control to take the best of both approaches. An overview of link-level measurement techniques for wide-area wireless networks
By building wireless link-level measurement tools we hope to improvement the design, deployment and management of wide-area wireless community networks. This paper identifies existing link-level measurement techniques and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each in the context of measuring and monitoring such networks. Finally, we make a case for the need for more sophisticated techniques and tools which will assist both day-to-day network operations as well as wireless network research

compute continuum spanning from cloud to edge to devices, with varying capacity, architecture etc. Second, some computations need to be made predictable (real-time response), thus supporting both data-in-motion processing and larger-scale data-at-rest processing. Fault-Tolerance by Graceful Degradation for Car Platoons
The key advantage of autonomous car platoons are their short inter-vehicle distances that increase traffic flow and reduce fuel consumption. However, this is challenging for operational and functional safety. If a failure occurs, the affected vehicles cannot suddenly stop driving but instead should continue their operation with reduced performance until a safe state can be reached or, in the case of temporal failures, full functionality can be guaranteed again. To achieve this degradation, platoon members have to be able to compensate sensor and communication failures and have to adjust their inter-vehicle distances to ensure safety. In this work, we describe a systematic design of degradation cascades for sensor and communication failures in autonomous car platoons using the example of an autonomous model car. We describe our systematic design method, the resulting degradation modes, and formulate contracts for each degradation level. We model and test our resulting degradation controller in Simulink/Stateflow
How to Choose the Relevant MAC Protocol for Wireless Smart Parking Urban Networks?
Parking sensor network is rapidly deploying around the world and is regarded
as one of the first implemented urban services in smart cities. To provide the
best network performance, the MAC protocol shall be adaptive enough in order to
satisfy the traffic intensity and variation of parking sensors. In this paper,
we study the heavy-tailed parking and vacant time models from SmartSantander,
and then we apply the traffic model in the simulation with four different kinds
of MAC protocols, that is, contention-based, schedule-based and two hybrid
versions of them. The result shows that the packet interarrival time is no
longer heavy-tailed while collecting a group of parking sensors, and then
choosing an appropriate MAC protocol highly depends on the network
configuration. Also, the information delay is bounded by traffic and MAC

MIRIAM: A Multimodal Chat-Based Interface for Autonomous Systems
We present MIRIAM (Multimodal Intelligent inteRactIon for Autonomous
systeMs), a multimodal interface to support situation awareness of autonomous
vehicles through chat-based interaction. The user is able to chat about the
vehicle's plan, objectives, previous activities and mission progress. The
system is mixed initiative in that it pro-actively sends messages about key
events, such as fault warnings. We will demonstrate MIRIAM using SeeByte's
