In-situ crack and keyhole pore detection in laser directed energy deposition through acoustic signal and deep learning
Cracks and keyhole pores are detrimental defects in alloys produced by laser
directed energy deposition (LDED). Laser-material interaction sound may hold
information about underlying complex physical events such as crack propagation
and pores formation. However, due to the noisy environment and intricate signal
content, acoustic-based monitoring in LDED has received little attention. This
paper proposes a novel acoustic-based in-situ defect detection strategy in
LDED. The key contribution of this study is to develop an in-situ acoustic
signal denoising, feature extraction, and sound classification pipeline that
incorporates convolutional neural networks (CNN) for online defect prediction.
Microscope images are used to identify locations of the cracks and keyhole
pores within a part. The defect locations are spatiotemporally registered with
acoustic signal. Various acoustic features corresponding to defect-free
regions, cracks, and keyhole pores are extracted and analysed in time-domain,
frequency-domain, and time-frequency representations. The CNN model is trained
to predict defect occurrences using the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients
(MFCCs) of the lasermaterial interaction sound. The CNN model is compared to
various classic machine learning models trained on the denoised acoustic
dataset and raw acoustic dataset. The validation results shows that the CNN
model trained on the denoised dataset outperforms others with the highest
overall accuracy (89%), keyhole pore prediction accuracy (93%), and AUC-ROC
score (98%). Furthermore, the trained CNN model can be deployed into an
in-house developed software platform for online quality monitoring. The
proposed strategy is the first study to use acoustic signals with deep learning

The Vietnam War was unique among American wars. To pinpoint its uniqueness, it was necessary to look for a non-American voice that would enable me to articulate its distinctiveness and explore the American character as observed by an Asian. Takeshi Kaiko proved to be most helpful. From his novel, Into a Black Sun, I was able to establish a working pair of 'bookends' from which to approach the poetry of Walter McDonald, Bruce Weigl, Basil T. Paquet and Steve Mason. Chapter One is devoted to those seemingly mismatched 'bookends,' Walt Whitman and General William C. Westmoreland, and their respective anthropocentric and technocentric visions of progress and the peculiarly American concept of the "open road" as they manifest themselves in Vietnam. In Chapter, Two, I analyze the war poems of Walter McDonald. As a pilot, writing primarily about flying, his poetry manifests General Westmoreland's technocentric vision of the 'road' as determined by and manifest through technology. Chapter Three focuses on the poems of Bruce Weigl. The poems analyzed portray the literal and metaphorical descent from the technocentric, 'numbed' distance of aerial warfare to the world of ground warfare, and the initiation of a 'fucking new guy,' who discovers the contours of the self's interior through a set of experiences that lead from from aerial insertion into the jungle to the degradation of burning human
feces. Chapter Four, devoted to the thirteen poems of Basil T. Paquet, focuses on the continuation of the descent begun in Chapter Two. In his capacity as a medic, Paquet's entire body of poems details his quotidian tasks which entail tending the maimed, the mortally wounded and the dead. The final chapter deals with Steve Mason's JohnnY's Song, and his depiction of the plight of Vietnam veterans back in "The World" who are still trapped inside the interior landscape of their individual "ghettoes" of the soul created by their war-time experiences
MUFFLE: Multi-Modal Fake News Influence Estimator on Twitter
To alleviate the impact of fake news on our society, predicting the popularity of fake news posts on social media is a crucial problem worthy of study. However, most related studies on fake news emphasize detection only. In this paper, we focus on the issue of fake news influence prediction, i.e., inferring how popular a fake news post might become on social platforms. To achieve our goal, we propose a comprehensive framework, MUFFLE, which captures multi-modal dynamics by encoding the representation of news-related social networks, user characteristics, and content in text. The attention mechanism developed in the model can provide explainability for social or psychological analysis. To examine the effectiveness of MUFFLE, we conducted extensive experiments on real-world datasets. The experimental results show that our proposed method outperforms both state-of-the-art methods of popularity prediction and machine-based baselines in top-k NDCG and hit rate. Through the experiments, we also analyze the feature importance for predicting fake news influence via the explainability provided by MUFFLE

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to compare foraging sea turtle density and distribution of sea turtles in two contrasting habitats in the Chagos Archipelago
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) facilitate observation of elusive species or remote locations, and are increasingly used to survey marine habitats. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a conservation tool used to protect marine species, and regular population assessments can establish if MPAs are effectively facilitating the recovery of endangered species. Sea turtles in the Western Indian Ocean have been historically exploited through trade and by-catch causing a reduction in numbers. Here, UAVs were utilised to assess the population density and distribution of green (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) turtles between ocean and lagoon environments in the Chagos Archipelago. Analysis protocols were developed to process UAV imagery, including carapace-measurement techniques, and certainty-classing turtle observations (Definite, Probable or Possible). Along 20 km of coastline, 5.13 km2 was surveyed across 11 days between July 2019 – February 2021 resulting in a high-certainty estimate of 381 turtles and a low-certainty estimate of 660. Species and life-stage identification implicate Chagos as developmental habitat for immature hawksbill turtles: 78.47% (n = 299/381) of identified definite turtles were immature, of which 66.55% (n = 199/299) were hawksbill. Diego Garcia Ocean Site 1, West sites and Turtle Cove were significant turtle hotspots (high-certainty results: 257.19 individuals/km2, 146.15 individuals/km2, and 135.08 individuals/km2, respectively), while Marina sites were least-dense (0 - 4.87 individuals/km2). Results for low-certainty data were comparable: 325.27 individuals/km2 in Diego Garcia Site 1, followed by 309.27 and 292.67 individuals/km2 in Turtle Cove. Population density decreased significantly with increasing distance from the shore, and decreased with increasing distance from Turtle Cove. Green turtles were smaller (50.33 ± 17.65 cm straight-carapace length, SCL) than hawksbill turtles (53.16 ± 11.17 cm SCL). This study highlights the Chagos Archipelago as developmental habitat for immature turtles, and demonstrates the applicability of UAVs for in-situ population monitoring to infer conservation status of marine megafauna

Epoxy is a widely used polymer because of its ease of processing, high adhesiveness, and high chemical resistance. Epoxy-based composites are commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. The epoxy type, function, curing agent, and curing process are discussed in this chapter. Epoxy is used as either a filler or polymer matrix in composite applications. As a filler, the epoxy modification on the fiber is discussed. As a polymer matrix, the epoxy is reinforced by natural and synthetic fibers. The manufacturing process and the fabricated epoxy-based composites’ performance (e.g., mechanical and thermal properties) are investigated. The advantages and disadvantages of epoxy’s function are discussed and summarized. Epoxy modification is an effective approach to improve the composites’ performance
On the Mechanism of Building Core Competencies: a Study of Chinese Multinational Port Enterprises
This study aims to explore how Chinese multinational port enterprises (MNPEs) build
their core competencies. Core competencies are firms’special capabilities and sources
to gain sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in marketplace, and the concept led
to extensive research and debates. However, few studies include inquiries about the
mechanisms of building core competencies in the context of Chinese MNPEs.
Accordingly, answers were sought to three research questions:
1. What are the core competencies of the Chinese MNPEs?
2. What are the mechanisms that the Chinese MNPEs use to build their core
competencies?
3. What are the paths that the Chinese MNPEs pursue to build their resources bases?
The study adopted a multiple-case study design, focusing on building mechanism of
core competencies with RBV. It selected purposively five Chinese leading MNPEs
and three industry associations as Case Companies.
The study revealed three main findings. First, it identified three generic core
competencies possessed by Case Companies, i.e., innovation in business models and
operations, utilisation of technologies, and acquisition of strategic resources. Second,
it developed the conceptual framework of the Mechanism of Building Core
Competencies (MBCC), which is a process of change of collective learning in
effective and efficient utilization of resources of a firm in response to critical events.
Third, it proposed three paths to build core competencies, i.e., enhancing collective
learning, selecting sustainable processes, and building resource base.
The study contributes to the knowledge of core competencies and RBV in three ways:
(1) presenting three generic core competencies of the Chinese MNPEs, (2) proposing
a new conceptual framework to explain how Chinese MNPEs build their core
competencies, (3) suggesting a solid anchor point (MBCC) to explain the links among
resources, core competencies, and SCA. The findings set benchmarks for Chinese
logistics industry and provide guidelines to build core competencies
Exploring environmental concerns on digital platforms through big data: the effect of online consumers’ environmental discourse on online review ratings
By deploying big data analytical techniques to retrieve and analyze a large volume of more than 2.7 million reviews, this work sheds light on how environmental concerns expressed by tourists on digital platforms, in the guise of online reviews, influence their satisfaction with tourism and hospitality services. More specifically, we conduct a multi-platform study of Tripadvisor.com and Booking.com online reviews (ORs) pertaining to hotel services across eight leading tourism destination cities in America and Europe over the period 2017–2018. By adopting multivariate regression analyses, we show that OR ratings are positively influenced by both the presence and depth of environmental discourse on these platforms. Theoretical and managerial contributions, and implications for digital platforms, big data analytics (BDA), electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) and environmental research within the tourism and hospitality domain are examined, with a view to capturing, empirically, the effect of environmental discourse presence and depth on customer satisfaction proxied through online ratings
