Graph-based classification of multiple observation sets
We consider the problem of classification of an object given multiple
observations that possibly include different transformations. The possible
transformations of the object generally span a low-dimensional manifold in the
original signal space. We propose to take advantage of this manifold structure
for the effective classification of the object represented by the observation
set. In particular, we design a low complexity solution that is able to exploit
the properties of the data manifolds with a graph-based algorithm. Hence, we
formulate the computation of the unknown label matrix as a smoothing process on
the manifold under the constraint that all observations represent an object of
one single class. It results into a discrete optimization problem, which can be
solved by an efficient and low complexity algorithm. We demonstrate the
performance of the proposed graph-based algorithm in the classification of sets
of multiple images. Moreover, we show its high potential in video-based face
recognition, where it outperforms state-of-the-art solutions that fall short of
exploiting the manifold structure of the face image data sets.Comment: New content adde
3D Face Recognition using Significant Point based SULD Descriptor
In this work, we present a new 3D face recognition method based on Speeded-Up
Local Descriptor (SULD) of significant points extracted from the range images
of faces. The proposed model consists of a method for extracting distinctive
invariant features from range images of faces that can be used to perform
reliable matching between different poses of range images of faces. For a given
3D face scan, range images are computed and the potential interest points are
identified by searching at all scales. Based on the stability of the interest
point, significant points are extracted. For each significant point we compute
the SULD descriptor which consists of vector made of values from the convolved
Haar wavelet responses located on concentric circles centred on the significant
point, and where the amount of Gaussian smoothing is proportional to the radii
of the circles. Experimental results show that the newly proposed method
provides higher recognition rate compared to other existing contemporary models
developed for 3D face recognition
A Differential Approach for Gaze Estimation
Non-invasive gaze estimation methods usually regress gaze directions directly
from a single face or eye image. However, due to important variabilities in eye
shapes and inner eye structures amongst individuals, universal models obtain
limited accuracies and their output usually exhibit high variance as well as
biases which are subject dependent. Therefore, increasing accuracy is usually
done through calibration, allowing gaze predictions for a subject to be mapped
to his/her actual gaze. In this paper, we introduce a novel image differential
method for gaze estimation. We propose to directly train a differential
convolutional neural network to predict the gaze differences between two eye
input images of the same subject. Then, given a set of subject specific
calibration images, we can use the inferred differences to predict the gaze
direction of a novel eye sample. The assumption is that by allowing the
comparison between two eye images, annoyance factors (alignment, eyelid
closing, illumination perturbations) which usually plague single image
prediction methods can be much reduced, allowing better prediction altogether.
Experiments on 3 public datasets validate our approach which constantly
outperforms state-of-the-art methods even when using only one calibration
sample or when the latter methods are followed by subject specific gaze
adaptation.Comment: Extension to our paper A differential approach for gaze estimation
