Experimental and numerical polar scans of several anisotropic materials using pulsed and harmonic ultrasonic beams
Ultrasonic non-destructive testing is a well known technique in present days, in which the C-scan is the most wide spread. Though, because of the inherent limitations of most methods to quantitatively characterize (damaged) composite materials, the quest for more sophisticated methods is put forward. This study reports experimentally registered polar scans using an in house developed ultrasonic test setup for some typical composite materials. Both pulsed and harmonic ultrasonic beams are considered, which impinge onto the immersed anisotropic layer under investigation. Numerical computations are shown and compared with the experimental results. The experimental polar scan of a carbon fabric/PPS laminate with an artificially added delamination shows a drastic change in the observed patterns, compared to the one of the undamaged carbon fabric/PPS laminate. Combined with the sensitivity to the local stiffness tensor, a polar scan can become a great tool to quantitatively evaluate (damaged) composite materials

Characterization of Mode 1 and Mode 2 delamination growth and thresholds in graphite/peek composites
Composite materials often fail by delamination. The onset and growth of delamination in AS4/PEEK, a tough thermoplastic matrix composite, was characterized for mode 1 and mode 2 loadings, using the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) and the End Notched Flexure (ENF) test specimens. Delamination growth per fatigue cycle, da/dN, was related to strain energy release rate, G, by means of a power law. However, the exponents of these power laws were too large for them to be adequately used as a life prediction tool. A small error in the estimated applied loads could lead to large errors in the delamination growth rates. Hence strain energy release rate thresholds, G sub th, below which no delamination would occur were also measured. Mode 1 and 2 threshold G values for no delamination growth were found by monitoring the number of cycles to delamination onset in the DCB and ENF specimens. The maximum applied G for which no delamination growth had occurred until at least 1,000,000 cycles was considered the threshold strain energy release rate. Comments are given on how testing effects, facial interference or delamination front damage, may invalidate the experimental determination of the constants in the expression
Effects of stitching on delamination of satin weave carbon-epoxy laminates under mode I, mode II and mixed-mode I/II loadings
The objective of the present study is to characterize the effect of modified chain stitching on the delamination growth under mixed-mode I/II loading conditions. Delamination toughness under mode I is experimentally determined, for unstitched and stitched laminates, by using untabbed and tabbed double cantilever beam (TDCB) tests. The effect of the reinforcing tabs on mode I toughness is investigated. Stitching improves the energy release rate (ERR) up to 4 times in mode I. Mode II delamination toughness is evaluated in end-notched flexure (ENF) tests. Different geometries of stitched specimens are tested. Crack propagation occurs without any failure of stitching yarns. The final crack length attains the mid-span or it stops before and the specimen breaks in bending. The ERR is initially low and gradually increases with crack length to very high values. The mixedmode delamination behaviour is investigated using a mixed-mode bending (MMB) test. For unstitched specimens, a simple mixed-mode criterion is identified. For stitched specimens, stitching yarns do not break during 25% of mode I ratio tests and the ERR increase is relatively small compared to unstitched values. For 70% and 50% of mode I ratios, failures of yarns are observed during crack propagation and tests are able to capture correctly the effect of the stitching: it clearly improves the ERR for these two mixed modes, as much as threefold
The influence of toughening-particles in CFRPs on low velocity impact damage resistance performance
The role of particle-toughening for increasing impact damage resistance in carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites was investigated. Five carbon fibre reinforced systems consisting of four particle-toughened matrices and one system containing no toughening particles were subjected to low velocity impacts ranging from 25 J to 50 J to establish the impact damage resistance of each material system. Synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SRCT) enabled a novel approach for damage assessment and quantification. Toughening mechanisms were detected in the particle-toughened systems consisting of particle–resin debonding, crack-deflection and crack-bridging. Quantification of the bridging behaviour, increase in crack path length and roughness was undertaken. Out of the three toughening mechanisms measured, particle systems exhibited a larger extent of bridging suggesting a significant contribution of this toughening mechanism compared to the system with no particle
Meso-scale modelling of 3D woven composite T-joints with weave variations
A meso-scale modelling framework is proposed to simulate the 3D woven fibre architectures and the mechanical performance of the composite T-joints, subjected to quasi-static tensile pull-off loading. The proposed method starts with building the realistic reinforcement geometries of the 3D woven T-joints at the mesoscale, of which the modelling strategy is applicable for other types of geometries with weave variations at the T-joint junction. Damage modelling incorporates both interface and constituent material damage, in conjunction with a continuum damage mechanics approach to account for the progressive failure behaviour. With a voxel based cohesive zone model, the proposed method is able to model mode I delamination based on the voxel mesh technique, which has advantages in meshing. Predicted results are in good agreement with experimental data beyond initial failure, in terms of load-displacement responses, failure events, damage initiation and propagation. The significant effect of fibre architecture variations on mechanical behaviour is successfully predicted through this modelling method without any further correlation of input parameters in damage model. This predictive method will facilitate the design and optimisation of 3D woven T-joint preforms
A study of composite material damage induced by laser shock waves
A laser shock wave technique has been used to study the damage tolerance of T800/M21 CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) composite material with different lay_ups. Different levels of damage have been created according to various laser irradiation conditions. Several characterization methods such as Optical Microscopy, X-ray Radiography, or Interferometric Confocal Microscopy have been used to quantify these defects. The nature of the defects induced by the shock wave propagation has been studied. The sensitivity of the composite material damage to the shock conditions has been shown and quantified. Moreover, the experimental results gathered with each technique have been compared to each other and it leads to a better understanding of the CFRP behavior under high dynamic loading. These original results have enabled the definition of a specific damage criterion for CFRP under dynamic loading

A local defect resonance for linear and nonlinear ultrasonic thermography
An efficient wave-defect interaction is the key to a high thermal response of flaws in ultrasonic thermography. To selectively enhance defect vibrations a concept of local defect resonance is developed and applied to ultrasonic activation of defects. The frequency match between the defect resonance frequency and the probing ultrasonic wave results in a substantial rise of a local defect temperature. The defect resonance is accompanied by depletion of the excitation frequency vibration due to nonlinear frequency conversion to higher harmonics. The local generation of higher frequency components provides a high thermal defect response in such an acoustically nonlinear thermography mode
