Ethynyl terminated ester oligomers and polymers therefrom
A new class of ethynyl-terminated oligomers and the process for preparing same are disclosed. Upon the application of heat, with or without a catalyst, the ethynyl groups react to provide crosslinking and chain extension to increase the polymer use temperature and improve the polymer solvent resistance. These improved polyesters are potentially useful in packaging, magnetic tapes, capacitors, industrial belting, protective coatings, structural adhesives and composite matrices
The bi-composite transition joint
The application of advanced composite materials to high performance structure frequently results in the desire to fabricate a structure from more than one composite system in order to tailor the composite material capabilities to the design requirements. The bi-composite transition provides a means of joining two different composite structural systems without the weight and complexity of mechanical attachments. The monolayer plies or combinations of plies of one composite system are interleaved with and bonded to the plies of the adjacent composite system, thereby providing a direct load transfer between the two composite structures
Development of advanced composite structures
Composite structure programs: the L-1011 Advanced Composite Vertical Fin (ACVF), the L-1011 Advanced Composite Aileron, and a wing study program were reviewed. These programs were structured to provide the technology and confidence for the use of advanced composite materials for primary and secondary structures of future transport aircraft. The current status of the programs is discussed. The results of coupon tests for both material systems are presented as well as the ACVF environmental (moisture and temperature) requirements. The effect of moisture and temperature on the mechanical properties of advanced composite materials is shown. The requirements set forth in the FAA Certification Guidelines for Civil Composite Aircraft Structures are discussed as they relate to the ACVF
Lambda Boo stars with composite spectra
We examine the large sample of lambda Boo candidates collected in Table 1 of
Gerbaldi et al. (2003) to see how many of them show composite spectra. Of the
132 lambda Boo candidates we identify 22 which definitely show composite
spectra and 15 more for which there are good reasons to suspect a composite
spectrum. The percentage of lambda Boo candidates with composite spectra is
therefore > 17 and possibly considerably higher. For such stars the lambda Boo
classification should be reconsidered taking into account the fact that their
spectra are composite. We argue that some of the underabundances reported in
the literature may simply be the result of the failure to consider the
composite nature of the spectra. This leads to the legitimate suspicion that
some, if not all, the lambda Boo candidates are not chemically peculiar at all.
A thorough analysis of even a single one of the lambda Boo candidates with
composite spectra, in which the composite nature of the spectrum is duly
considered, which would demonstrate that the chemical peculiarities persist,
would clear the doubt we presently have that the stars with composite spectra
may not be lambda Boo at all.Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A on June 3rd 200
Structures for Interacting Composite Fermions: Stripes, Bubbles, and Fractional Quantum Hall Effect
Much of the present day qualitative phenomenology of the fractional quantum
Hall effect can be understood by neglecting the interactions between composite
fermions altogether. For example the fractional quantum Hall effect at
corresponds to filled composite-fermion Landau levels,and
the compressible state at to the Fermi sea of composite fermions.
Away from these filling factors, the residual interactions between composite
fermions will determine the nature of the ground state. In this article, a
model is constructed for the residual interaction between composite fermions,
and various possible states are considered in a variational approach. Our study
suggests formation of composite-fermion stripes, bubble crystals, as well as
fractional quantum Hall states for appropriate situations.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
