    Imagining race and identity in the reading and writing of Caribbean literature: a decolonial psychological perspective

    Claiming fictional literature as a site of resistance to coloniality, this study has two aims. I consider critically the manifestations of (de)coloniality and decolonising psychological work evident in selected Caribbean literature. I also use my own fictional writing to provide a case study of how decolonial writing might be used to illustrate and explore how other-than-Western epistemology and ontology can offer space to re-imagine psychology and its praxis. Creative Caribbean literature offers rich material to (re)animate psychologically oriented thinking about identity and ‘race’ and the contemporary experiences of racism, colourism, sexism, classism, economic exploitation, and homophobia using a decolonial lens. This study provides a critical decolonial reading of Jamaican Literature as a Subset of Caribbean Literature. I explore whether and how fiction, inspired by a decolonial turn, opens spaces for psychological oriented decolonial work. I underline the tensions in the shifts between coloniality and decoloniality in Jamaican writing including novels, anthologies of short stories, and poetry. The conceptual schemas that underpin my practices of reading, thinking, and writing as both researcher and creative, are simultaneously decolonial theory and decolonial methodology. As such, the theory-methodology for this study is framed as interconnected concepts and ideas derived from Critical Race Theory, Black Feminisms, and Afrocentric and decolonial thought.     Systematic Approaches for Telemedicine and Data Coordination for COVID-19 in Baja California, Mexico

Our model is based on human-centric design factors and cross disciplinary collaborations for scalable data-driven enablement of smartphone, cellular, and video Teleconsul-tation technologies to link hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services for point-of-care assessments of COVID testing, and for subsequent treatment and quar-antine decisions. A multidisciplinary team was rapidly created, in cooperation with different institutions, including: the Autonomous University of Baja California, the Ministry of Health, the Command, Communication and Computer Control Center of the Ministry of the State of Baja California (C4), Colleges of Medicine, and the College of Psychologists. Our objective is to provide information to the public and to evaluate COVID-19 in real time and to track, regional, municipal, and state-wide data in real time that informs supply chains and resource allocation with the anticipation of a surge in COVID-19 cases.     Suffering in Babylon: Ludlul bēl nēmeqi and the scholars, ancient and modern

    Suffering in Babylon comprises a series of studies on Ludlul bēl nēmeqi. Part One examines the modern scholarship surrounding the poem’s textual reconstruction and translation. Ludlul exists today as a composite text, pieced together over the last 180 years from dozens of cuneiform tablets and fragments from various archaeological sites. With these disparate sources, Assyriologists have reconstructed three quarters of the poem’s original text, which is here translated anew with extensive epigraphic and philological notes. Part Two explores the historical contexts of the poem and its reception among first-millennium scribes. Whether the poem’s protagonist is the historical Šubši-mešrê-Šakkan or not, his experiences as described in the poem provide insight into the worldview and concerns of the ancient scholars among whom the poem’s author was counted, likely from the ranks of the exorcists. The protagonist’s experience with divine revelation sheds light on those scholars’ divinatory worldview. The anatomical and pathological vocabulary used to describe his suffering compares well to the vocabulary in exorcism texts. The ritual failures he experiences reflect the poem’s institutional agenda. And the structure and language of his first person account shows intertextual connections with incantation prayers, a genre distinctive to exorcism. The poem’s subsequent incorporation into various scribal curricula and tablet collections demonstrates the poem’s cultural stature among first-millennium scribes, who wrote a commentary on Ludlul and used the text in the creation of others. Part Three offers a comparative study that bridges the ancient and modern scholarly horizons. Drawing on both ancient and modern scholarship, it compares the protagonist’s experience of the alû demon with the clinical condition known today as sleep paralysis. The book’s underlying goal is to illustrate the potential of a multi-perspectival approach to Akkadian literature that acknowledges the contexts of both ancient and modern scholars involved in producing meaningful readings of this ancient literary gem

    The papers by Jack Stenner included in this book document the technical details of an art and science of measurement that creates new entrepreneurial business opportunities. Jack brought theory, instruments, and data together in ways that are applicable not only in the context of a given test of reading or mathematics ability, but which more importantly catalyzed literacy and numeracy capital in new fungible expressions. Though Jack did not reflect in writing on the inferential, constructive processes in which he engaged, much can be learned by reviewing his work with his accomplishments in mind. A Foreword by Stenner's colleague and co-author on multiple works, William P.     Anthropology has neglected the study of music. Music and Digital Media shows how and why this should be redressed. It does so by enabling music to expand the horizons of digital anthropology, demonstrating how the field can build interdisciplinary links to music and sound studies, digital/media studies, and science and technology studies. Music and Digital Media is the first comparative ethnographic study of the impact of digital media on music worldwide. It offers a radical and lucid new theoretical framework for understanding digital media through music, showing that music is today where the promises and problems of the digital assume clamouring audibility. The book contains ten chapters, eight of which present comprehensive original ethnographies; they are bookended by an authoritative introduction and a comparative postlude.     Negotiating Between Shell And Paper: Wampum Belts As Agents Of Religious Diplomacy

    In a dialogue between the material and the textual, can objects speak over texts? This project examines nine devotional wampum belts produced as cross-cultural mediators between Catholic ecclesiastics and Indigenous people in northeastern North America between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Following Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, Abenaki, and Anishinaabe epistemologies, wampum belts have been considered as both symbols of Native American and First Nations sovereignty, and as non-human beings doted with agency and willpower. When Indigenous Christians sent wampum belts to religious communities in France, Belgium, and Italy, these objects embodied diplomatic requests presented to Christian saints worshipped at these sites. Did these wampum belts function as independent diplomatic agents, without the presence of Indigenous interpreters? If so, what were these belts meant to do? I suggest that there may be heretofore unexamined messages, embedded in the material and documentary record, that reveal the agency and potency of these objects. Closer engagements with wampum materiality can offer insights that are missing from earlier historical studies of missionary-Indigenous relations. To discern this, I examined construction techniques that may reveal Indigenous makers’ agency in articulating political demands. I conducted archival research and re-examined historical translations, while consulting with the Indigenous communities in Canada who created these wampum belts, to assess how wampum messaging impacts the consciousness of humans around it. These diverse sources illuminate the transfers of agency that take place during wampum diplomacy, showing the embodied innovations and continuities that allowed these materials to “speak” across space and time. These wampum belts constitute an alternative archive of both Indigenous and missionary strategies. The objects and associated papers show savvy Indigenization of Catholic stories and practices to secure new alliances and territories, at the same time that religious orders recorded different understandings of these relationships in French colonial archives. When these belts and papers have survived side by side in collections, they have continued to mediate various relationships, the most significant being between generations of Indigenous peoples who relate to their ancestors through them
