    Tension analysis at the business model level: multiple case studies of organisations in the food waste sector

    Adopting a case study approach, this work project focuses on early-stage hybrid organisations in the food waste sector. The purpose of the present study is to investigate which logics the organisations analysed embody, which business models they adopt and which tensions they experience. Four interviews were conducted, compiling three case studies. This work project advances understanding on which logics characterise early-stage hybrids in the food waste sector demonstrating that:food waste organisations embody business and environmental logics; adopt a business model in which customers are part of the beneficiaries; and experience performing, organising and learning tensions

    Adding DL-Lite TBoxes to Proper Knowledge Bases

    Levesqueā€™s proper knowledge bases (proper KBs) correspond to infinite sets of ground positive and negative facts, with the notable property that for FOL formulas in a certain normal form, which includes conjunctive queries and positive queries possibly extended with a controlled form of negation, entailment reduces to formula evaluation. However proper KBs represent extensional knowledge only. In description logic terms, they correspond to ABoxes. In this paper, we augment them with DL-Lite TBoxes, expressing intensional knowledge (i.e., the ontology of the domain). DL-Lite has the notable property that conjunctive query answering over TBoxes and standard description logic ABoxes is re- ducible to formula evaluation over the ABox only. Here, we investigate whether such a property extends to ABoxes consisting of proper KBs. Specifically, we consider two DL-Lite variants: DL-Literdfs , roughly corresponding to RDFS, and DL-Lite_core , roughly corresponding to OWL 2 QL. We show that when a DL- Lite_rdfs TBox is coupled with a proper KB, the TBox can be compiled away, reducing query answering to evaluation on the proper KB alone. But this reduction is no longer possible when we associate proper KBs with DL-Lite_core TBoxes. Indeed, we show that in the latter case, query answering even for conjunctive queries becomes coNP-hard in data complexity

    The MMT API: A Generic MKM System

    The MMT language has been developed as a scalable representation and interchange language for formal mathematical knowledge. It permits natural representations of the syntax and semantics of virtually all declarative languages while making MMT-based MKM services easy to implement. It is foundationally unconstrained and can be instantiated with specific formal languages. The MMT API implements the MMT language along with multiple backends for persistent storage and frontends for machine and user access. Moreover, it implements a wide variety of MMT-based knowledge management services. The API and all services are generic and can be applied to any language represented in MMT.     Is there a semantic system for abstract words?

    Two views on the semantics of concrete words are that their core mental representations are feature-based or are reconstructions of sensory experience. We argue that neither of these approaches is capable of representing the semantics of abstract words, which involve the representation of possibly hypothetical physical and mental states, the binding of entities within a structure, and the possible use of embedding (or recursion) in such structures. Brain based evidence in the form of dissociations between deficits related to concrete and abstract semantics corroborates the hypothesis. Neuroimaging evidence suggests that left lateral inferior frontal cortex supports those processes responsible for the representation of abstract words
