Ensuring Query Compatibility with Evolving XML Schemas
During the life cycle of an XML application, both schemas and queries may
change from one version to another. Schema evolutions may affect query results
and potentially the validity of produced data. Nowadays, a challenge is to
assess and accommodate the impact of theses changes in rapidly evolving XML
applications.
This article proposes a logical framework and tool for verifying
forward/backward compatibility issues involving schemas and queries. First, it
allows analyzing relations between schemas. Second, it allows XML designers to
identify queries that must be reformulated in order to produce the expected
results across successive schema versions. Third, it allows examining more
precisely the impact of schema changes over queries, therefore facilitating
their reformulation
Representing and Utilizing DDI in Relational Databases
This document is primarily intended for implementers of DDI-based metadata stores who are considering different technical options for housing and managing their metadata. The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata specification is expressed in the form of XML schema. With version 3, the DDI specification has become quite complex, including 21 namespaces and 846 elements. Organizations employing DDI, or considering doing so, may want to 1. store and manage the metadata elements in relational databases, for reasons of integration with existing systems, familiarity with the concepts of relational databases (such as Structured Query Language), systems performance, and/or other reasons; 2. select only the subset of the available DDI metadata elements that is of utility to their work, and have the flexibility of capturing metadata they need that would not fit into the DDI model. This paper discusses advantages and disadvantages of the relational database approach to managing DDI. It also describes methods for modeling DDI in relational databases and for formally defining subsets of DDI to employ in this environment.
Interoperability Between ELearning Systems
Online assessments are an integral part of eLearning systems that enhance both distance and continuous education. Although over two-hundred and fifty eLearning applications exist, most educational institutions are trapped with a particular vendor primarily due to lack of in test-question sharing features. This paper highlights the evolution of eLearning systems whilst detailing the two most prominent objective test question standards, namely, QML and QTI. An analysis conducted amongst software houses which are involved in the development of eLearning systems confirms the fact that most applications make use of proprietary formats and clearly shows a lack of import and export options amongst other features
IVOA Recommendation: Simple Cone Search Version 1.03
This specification defines a simple query protocol for retrieving records
from a catalog of astronomical sources. The query describes sky position and an
angular distance, defining a cone on the sky. The response returns a list of
astronomical sources from the catalog whose positions lie within the cone,
formatted as a VOTable. This version of the specification is essentially a
transcription of the original Cone Search specification in order to move it
into the IVOA standardization process

Evaluating openEHR for storing computable representations of electronic health record phenotyping algorithms
Electronic Health Records (EHR) are data generated during routine clinical
care. EHR offer researchers unprecedented phenotypic breadth and depth and have
the potential to accelerate the pace of precision medicine at scale. A main EHR
use-case is creating phenotyping algorithms to define disease status, onset and
severity. Currently, no common machine-readable standard exists for defining
phenotyping algorithms which often are stored in human-readable formats. As a
result, the translation of algorithms to implementation code is challenging and
sharing across the scientific community is problematic. In this paper, we
evaluate openEHR, a formal EHR data specification, for computable

VOFilter, Bridging Virtual Observatory and Industrial Office Applications
VOFilter is an XML based filter developed by the Chinese Virtual Observatory
project to transform tabular data files from VOTable format into OpenDocument
format. VOTable is an XML format defined for the exchange of tabular data in
the context of the Virtual Observatory (VO). It is the first Proposed
Recommendation defined by International Virtual Observatory Alliance, and has
obtained wide support from both the VO community and many Astronomy projects.
OpenOffice.org is a mature, open source, front office applications suite with
the advantage of native support of industrial standard OpenDocument XML file
format. Using the VOFilter, VOTable files can be loaded in OpenOffice.org Calc,
a spreadsheet application, and then displayed and analyzed as other spreadsheet
files. Here, the VOFilter acts as a connector, bridging the coming VO with
current industrial office applications. Virtual Observatory and technical
background of the VOFilter are introduced. Its workflow, installation and usage
are presented. Existing problems and limitations are also discussed together
