    Named Entity Extraction and Disambiguation: The Reinforcement Effect.

    Named entity extraction and disambiguation have received much attention in recent years. Typical fields addressing these topics are information retrieval, natural language processing, and semantic web. Although these topics are highly dependent, almost no existing works examine this dependency. It is the aim of this paper to examine the dependency and show how one affects the other, and vice versa. We conducted experiments with a set of descriptions of holiday homes with the aim to extract and disambiguate toponyms as a representative example of named entities. We experimented with three approaches for disambiguation with the purpose to infer the country of the holiday home. We examined how the effectiveness of extraction influences the effectiveness of disambiguation, and reciprocally, how filtering out ambiguous names (an activity that depends on the disambiguation process) improves the effectiveness of extraction. Since this, in turn, may improve the effectiveness of disambiguation again, it shows that extraction and disambiguation may reinforce each other.\u

    The Wikipedia Image Retrieval Task

    The wikipedia image retrieval task at ImageCLEF provides a testbed for the system-oriented evaluation of visual information retrieval from a collection of Wikipedia images. The aim is to investigate the effectiveness of retrieval approaches that exploit textual and visual evidence in the context of a large and heterogeneous collection of images that are searched for by users with diverse information needs. This chapter presents an overview of the available test collections, summarises the retrieval approaches employed by the groups that participated in the task during the 2008 and 2009 ImageCLEF campaigns, provides an analysis of the main evaluation results, identifies best practices for effective retrieval, and discusses open issues

    Image sense disambiguation : a multimodal approach

Most successful object recognition algorithms require manually annotated images of objects to be collected for training. The amount of human effort required to collect training data has limited most approaches to the several hundred object categories available in the labeled datasets. While human-annotated image data is scarce, additional sources of information can be used as weak labels, reducing the need for human supervision. In this thesis, we use three types of information to learn models of object categories: speech, text and dictionaries. We demonstrate that our use of non-traditional information sources facilitates automatic acquisition of visual object models for arbitrary words without requiring any labeled image examples. Spoken object references occur in many scenarios: interaction with an assistant robot, voice-tagging of photos, etc. Existing reference resolution methods are unimodal, relying either only on image features, or only on speech recognition. We propose a method that uses both the image of the object and the speech segment referring to it to disambiguate the underlying object label. We show that even noisy speech input helps visual recognition, and vice versa. We also explore two sources of linguistic sense information: the words surrounding images on web pages, and dictionary entries for nouns that refer to objects. Keywords that index images on the web have been used as weak object labels, but these tend to produce noisy datasets with many unrelated images. We use unlabeled text, dictionary definitions, and semantic relations between concepts to learn a refined model of image sense. Our model can work with as little supervision as a single English word. We apply this model to a dataset of web images indexed by polysemous keywords, and show that it improves both retrieval of specific senses, and the resulting object classifiers.by Kate Saenko.Ph.D

    The organization of HTML into a tag tree structure, which is rendered by browsers as roughly rectangular regions with embedded text and HREF links, greatly helps surfers locate and click on links that best satisfy their information need. Can an automatic program emulate this human behavior and thereby learn to predict the relevance of an unseen HREF target page w.r.t. an information need, based on information limited to the HREF source page? Such a capability would be of great interest in focused crawling and resource discovery, because it can fine-tune the priority of unvisited URLs in the crawl frontier, and reduce the number of irrelevant pages which are fetched and discarded

    Reliability and effectiveness of clickthrough data for automatic image annotation

    Automatic image annotation using supervised learning is performed by concept classifiers trained on labelled example images. This work proposes the use of clickthrough data collected from search logs as a source for the automatic generation of concept training data, thus avoiding the expensive manual annotation effort. We investigate and evaluate this approach using a collection of 97,628 photographic images. The results indicate that the contribution of search log based training data is positive despite their inherent noise; in particular, the combination of manual and automatically generated training data outperforms the use of manual data alone. It is therefore possible to use clickthrough data to perform large-scale image annotation with little manual annotation effort or, depending on performance, using only the automatically generated training data.     Content-based access to spoken audio

    The amount of archived audio material in digital form is increasing rapidly, as advantage is taken of the growth in available storage and processing power. Computational resources are becoming less of a bottleneck to digitally record and archive vast amounts of spoken material, both television and radio broadcasts and individual conversations. However, listening to this ever-growing amount of spoken audio sequentially is too slow, and the bottleneck will become the development of effective ways to access content in these voluminous archives. The provision of accurate and efficient computer-mediated content access is a challenging task, because spoken audio combines information from multiple levels (phonetic, acoustic, syntactic, semantic and discourse). Most systems that assist humans in accessing spoken audio content have approached the problem by performing automatic speech recognition, followed by text-based information access. These systems have addressed diverse tasks including indexing and retrieving voicemail messages, searching for broadcast news, and extracting information from recordings of meetings and lectures. Spoken audio content is far richer than what a simple textual transcription can capture as it has additional cues that disclose the intended meaning and speaker’s emotional state. However, the text transcription alone still provides a great deal of useful information in applications. This article describes approaches to content-based access to spoken audio with a qualitative and tutorial emphasis. We describe how the analysis, retrieval and delivery phases contribute making spoken audio content more accessible, and we outline a number of outstanding research issues. We also discuss the main application domains and try to identify important issues for future developments. The structure of the article is based on general system architecture for content-based access which is depicted in Figure 1.
