Prey capture and meat-eating by the wild colobus monkey _Rhinopithecus bieti_ in Yunnan, China
If it is true that extant primates evolved from an insectivorous ancestor, then primate entomophagy would be a primitive trait. Many taxa, however, have undergone a dietary shift from entomophagy to phytophagy, evolving a specialised gut and dentition and becoming exclusive herbivores. The exclusively herbivorous taxa are the Malagasy families Indriidae and Lepilemuridae, and the Old World Monkey subfamily Colobinae, and among these meat-eating has not been observed except as an anomaly, with the sole exception of the Hanuman langur (_Semnopithecus entellus_), which feeds on insects seasonally, and a single observation of a nestling bird predated by wild Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (_Rhinopithecus roxellana_). Here, we describe the regular capture of warm-blooded animals and the eating of meat by a colobine, the critically endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (_Rhinopithecus bieti_). This monkey engages in scavenge hunting as a male-biased activity that may, in fact, be related to group structure and spatial spread. In this context, meat-eating can be regarded as an energy/nutrient maximization feeding strategy rather than as a consequence of any special characteristic of meat itself. The finding of meat-eating in forest-dwelling primates might provide new insights into the evolution of dietary habits in early humans
Cerebral complexity preceded enlarged brain size and reduced olfactory bulbs in Old World monkeys
Analysis of the only complete early cercopithecoid (Old World monkey) endocast currently known, that of 15-million-year (Myr)-old Victoriapithecus, reveals an unexpectedly small endocranial volume (ECV) relative to body size and a large olfactory bulb volume relative to ECV, similar to extant lemurs and Oligocene anthropoids. However, the Victoriapithecus brain has principal and arcuate sulci of the frontal lobe not seen in the stem catarrhine Aegyptopithecus, as well as a distinctive cercopithecoid pattern of gyrification, indicating that cerebral complexity preceded encephalization in cercopithecoids. Since larger ECVs, expanded frontal lobes, and reduced olfactory bulbs are already present in the 17- to 18-Myr-old ape Proconsul these features evolved independently in hominoids (apes) and cercopithecoids and much earlier in the former. Moreover, the order of encephalization and brain reorganization was apparently different in hominoids and cercopithecoids, showing that brain size and cerebral organization evolve independently
Grooming Dynamics Among Captive African (Colobus angolensis) and Asian (Trachypithecus cristatus) Colobines
Allogrooming, or attentive manipulation of the fur or skin by other individuals, has both utilitarian and social functions. Evidence for the latter includes reciprocation of mutual grooming or alliance formation, conflict reconciliation, and social mobility in hierarchies. A large body of evidence from numerous primate taxa indicates that grooming tendencies are strongly associated with feeding competition, emigration patterns, and social structure.
In this study, I examined differences in grooming frequencies within and between one group each of captive African (Colobus angolensis) and Asian (Trachypithecus cristatus) colobines at the Columbus Zoo. Data were collected from June – August 2010 using focal sampling methods which yielded approximately 50 hours of data for each group.
Both groups are female-bonded (generally associated with strong female philopatry, kin support, and frequent female-female social behavior), and I predicted that grooming between females would be more frequent than female-male grooming in both species. However, because these species have different behavioral patterns in the wild, I predicted that there would be some differences of grooming partner preferences between these two populations (with a null hypothesis of no difference between groups). As previous research has shown a reduced amount of grooming exhibited in some wild Asian colobines, I predicted grooming frequencies would be higher in African colobus (C. angolensis) females than in silvered langur (T. cristatus) females.
Using a chi-square statistic to test significance, female-female grooming was found to be significantly higher than female-male grooming among both T. cristatus (χ2 = 7.166, p = 0.007) and C. angolensis (χ2 = 43.183, p < 0.0005). The statistically significant difference demonstrated that silvered langur females actually groomed other group members more often than Angolan colobus females (χ2 = 28.528, p < 0.0005). I conclude that the female-bondedness exhibited in wild groups of both species is pervasive in these captive populations as represented by grooming. Infanticide and infant defence by males--modelling the conditions in primate multi-male groups
Infanticide by primate males was considered rare if groups contain more than one adult male because, owing to lower paternity certainty, a male should be less likely to benefit from infanticide. Guided by recent evidence for strong variation of infanticide in primate multi-male groups, we modelled the conditions for when infanticide should occur for a group with a resident and an immigrant male. Setting the parameters (e.g. infant mortality, reduction of interbirth interval, life-time reproductive success, genetic representation) to fit the conditions most commonly found in nature, we develop a game-theoretic model to explore the influence of age and dominance on the occurrence of infanticide and infant defence. Male age strongly impacts the likelihood of an attack which is modified by the father's defence. If the new male is dominant he is likely to attack under most circumstances whereas a subordinate male will only attack if the father does not defend. These model scenarios fit the conditions under which infanticide is known to occur in primate multi-male groups and offer an explanation why infanticide is common in some multi-male groups and rare in others. Overall, the benefits for infanticidal males are strongly governed by a reduced interbirth interval while advantages via improved genetic representation in the gene pool contribute but a minor fraction
Stable isotope evidence of meat eating and hunting specialization in adult male chimpanzees
Observations of hunting and meat eating in our closest living relatives, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), suggest that among primates, regular inclusion of meat in the diet is not a characteristic unique to Homo. Wild chimpanzees are known to consume vertebrate meat, but its actual dietary contribution is, depending on the study population, often either unknown or minimal. Constraints on continual direct observation throughout the entire hunting season mean that behavioral observations are limited in their ability to accurately quantify meat consumption. Here we present direct stable isotope evidence supporting behavioral observations of frequent meat eating among wild adult male chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in Taï National Park, Côte d’Ivoire. Meat eating among some of the male chimpanzees is significant enough to result in a marked isotope signal detectable on a short-term basis in their hair keratin and long-term in their bone collagen. Although both adult males and females and juveniles derive their dietary protein largely from daily fruit and seasonal nut consumption, our data indicate that some adult males also derive a large amount of dietary protein from hunted meat. Our results reinforce behavioral observations of male-dominated hunting and meat eating in adult Taï chimpanzees, suggesting that sex differences in food acquisition and consumption may have persisted throughout hominin evolution, rather than being a recent development in the human lineage
Dietary Profile of Rhinopithecus bieti and Its Socioecological Implications
To enhance our understanding of dietary adaptations and socioecological correlates in colobines, we conducted a 20-mo study of a wild group of Rhinopithecus bieti (Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys) in the montane Samage Forest. This forest supports a patchwork of evergreen broadleaved, evergreen coniferous, and mixed deciduous broadleaved/coniferous forest assemblages with a total of 80 tree species in 23 families. The most common plant families by basal area are the predominantly evergreen Pinaceae and Fagaceae, comprising 69% of the total tree biomass. Previous work has shown that lichens formed a consistent component in the monkeys' diet year-round (67%), seasonally complemented with fruits and young leaves. Our study showed that although the majority of the diet was provided by 6 plant genera (Acanthopanax, Sorbus, Acer, Fargesia, Pterocarya, and Cornus), the monkeys fed on 94 plant species and on 150 specific food items. The subjects expressed high selectivity for uncommon angiosperm tree species. The average number of plant species used per month was 16. Dietary diversity varied seasonally, being lowest during the winter and rising dramatically in the spring. The monkeys consumed bamboo shoots in the summer and bamboo leaves throughout the year. The monkeys also foraged on terrestrial herbs and mushrooms, dug up tubers, and consumed the flesh of a mammal (flying squirrel). We also provide a preliminary evaluation of feeding competition in Rhinopithecus bieti and find that the high selectivity for uncommon seasonal plant food items distributed in clumped patches might create the potential for food competition. The finding is corroborated by observations that the subjects occasionally depleted leafy food patches and stayed at a greater distance from neighboring conspecifics while feeding than while resting. The palaeontology of Haasgat a preliminary account
Haasgat is a cave on the steep western slope of the upper reach of the Witwatersrand Spruit, on the farm Leeuwenkloof 480 lQ, in the Brits District. It was heavily mined for flowstone (calcite). The cave contains a deposit offossiliferous cave silt and breccia that was partially removed by the miners and dumped on the steep slopes of the valley. The original entrance was probably a shallow inclined pit, leading into an upper chamber and then into the preserved depository. Both porcupines and carnivores served as accumulating agents for the bones. Fossils of the primates Parapapio and Cercopifhecoides, hyaena (Chasmaporthetes), fox, porcupines, several species of bovids and two species of Hyrax have been recovered. An insufficient number of fossils have been prepared to determine the age of the deposit with certainty. The deposit was provisionally thought to be of Pliocene age because of the occurrence of Parapapio. At this stage it would be unwise to correlate this occurrence with any other caves in this age range. Evolutionary determinants of modular societies in colobines
Modular societies are structurally characterized by nuclear one-male units (OMUs, or harems) embedded within larger relatively coherent social bands. Within the order Primates, modular societies are uncommon, found in only a few species, including humans. Asian colobines (Presbytini) principally form either unimale groups that forage independently and are often territorial, or modular associations, which range from tight bands composed of OMUs to loose neighborhoods of OMUs. A phylogenetic reconstruction of modularity in the Presbytini revealed that the single OMU pattern is probably the ancestral state while the modular pattern is derived. The selective forces favoring the evolution of modular societies have thus far been virtually unexplored. Although some ecological explanations cannot be ruled out at the moment due to lack of comparative and quantitative data, preliminary circumstantial evidence does not seem to support them. Instead, a social factor, bachelor threat, is consistent with many observations. This hypothesis argues that where the pressure from nonreproductive bachelor males is unusually high, OMUs aggregate as a means of decreasing the amount of harassment and the risk of takeovers and infanticide. A comparative test found an association between modular societies and bachelor threat, as proxied by sex ratio within social units. The concentration of modular systems in colobines may be due to their unusual ecology, which leads to unusually low intensity of scramble competition. Modular colobines rely more on nonlimiting ubiquitous resources than nonmodular ones and thus can afford to gather in bands. Moreover, by comparing the slopes of regressions between group size and daily travel distance for several groups of one modular and one nonmodular colobine, we found slopes in the nonmodular to be steeper by a factor 30, indicating that ecological constraints associated with scramble competition prevent higher level groupings in nonmodulars.
