    Create-A-Culture: An Experiential Approach To Cross Cultural Communication Dynamics

    This small group activity uses a pseudo-simulation approach to explore dynamics of enculturation, acculturation, third culture, and diaspora and the resulting influences upon cross-cultural communication competence. All human communication contexts are influenced by perceptual patterns which, in turn, are shaped by culture-based norms and views. Furthermore, as asserted by E.T. Hall, significant linkages exist between a group’s cultural influences and its communication practices. This guided, collaborative learning exercise also draws on the inherent diversity within the students’ personal cultural backgrounds and previous culture-based studies as they work together to create new (hypothetical) co-cultural groups. Through this multi-step exercise, students “experience” the long term processes by which a group develops its culture—as manifested in its observable elements, values, and contextual sensibilities. Students are encouraged to use their imaginations as informed by their historical, geographical, and anthropological knowledge in order to consider beyond their own personal cultural realities. This activity, which can be adjusted to a wide variety of class sizes and session-lengths, accomplishes several additional pedagogical objectives, including: collaborative learning, exploration of culture-based principles, and the application of systems theory to human communication practices (input-throughput-output)

    Summary: This is a paper that reviews and outlines the academic basis behind leadership in the post-compulsory setting. Description: Leadership has been for some years a key area of strategic and operational importance in the UK post-compulsory sector - this publication aims to addresss some of the issues surrounding this topic. It discusses theories and definitions of leadership, leader professionalism and post-compulsory education. A collaborative model of professional leadership is recommended, informed by authentic, democratic dialogue with practitioners. Coalitions that foster professional networking and collaborative leadership can be creatively developed through the establishment of intentionally designed communities of leadership practice. The CAMEL (Collaborative Approaches to the Management of e-Learning) JISC infoNet HEFCE/LGM-funded model for communities of practice is discussed as one model which provides a useful template for the development of shared knowledge through professional communities of practice in collaborative leadership. It is argued that this provides a helpful way of enabling and supporting leaders to advance their understanding and ‘know how' in leadership practices in a sector currently facing significant challenges from demanding external targets and continuous monitoring in an ‘audit culture’.     Operationalisation of the organisational orientation and culture construct in service value networks

    Todays service organisations increasingly operate as part of a larger service system or Service Value Network (SVN). This requires organisations to develop a work culture which encourages collaboration, communication, creativity, risk taking and empowerment among their members, and motivates employees to question fundamental beliefs and work patterns. This paper develops the Organisational Orientation and Culture (OOC)-construct for building a sustainable SVN, and comprises four key cultures and orientations from the literature: entrepreneurial orientation, collaborative culture, learning orientation, and market/customer orientation. Using empirical data from a large Australian telecommunications SVN, and through the use of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) (using a holdout sample), this paper demonstrates that Collaborative Culture, Entrepreneurial Orientation, and a newly merged factor Freedom of Speech Culture emerge as the predominant underlying factors of culture for contemporary collaborative service organisations
