Reconsidering Cohesion Policy : the Contested debate on Territorial Cohesion
The incorporation of territorial cohesion as a regional policy objective has focused attention on the potential role of territorial cooperation in pursuing this goal. However, the broad agreement on the positive effects of territorial cooperation is not always matched by the same enthusiasm when funds are being allocated. The concrete impact of territorial cooperation is often difficult to identify. At the same time, in terms of the qualitative impacts of territorial cooperation, the added value of INTERREG for territorial cohesion is difficult to dispute
Relational Cohesion Theory
[Excerpt] Relational cohesion theory explains how and when people who are exchanging things of value develop stable, cohesive relations. It starts from the idea that people tend to interact or do things with others because they get something they value or want from those others. They give something to the other and receive something in return. This is termed a social exchange. The valued goods” that are exchanged may be tangible or intangible. Employees exchange their labor for pay, clients exchange money for services, neighbors exchange assistance with each other\u27s yards, coworkers exchange advice and information, roommates exchange respect for each other\u27s belongings, and friends exchange emotional support for each other
Education, Equity and Social Cohesion : A Distributional Model [Wider Benefits of Learning Research Report No. 7]
This report - the first from the Centre’s comparative strand of research - focuses on the effects of education on social cohesion at the societal level. The research involved two elements. The first was a theoretical analysis and critique of models in the existing international and comparative literature on education, social capital and social cohesion. This led to the development of a new hypothetical model relating skills distribution to social cohesion. The second part of the research used cross-national, quantitative techniques to test the model on aggregated data for 15 countries. The analysis suggests that educational distribution may be a very significant influence on societal cohesion in certain contexts. Improving levels of education alone may not foster social solidarity if inequalities of skill and income persist. The findings here have important policy implications. Existing policies focus on developing the individual resources and competences which will help to build social capital and community cohesion. However, these will not necessarily impact on cohesion at the societal level. Creating a more cohesive society is likely to require policies that are also designed to increase equality through narrowing educational outcomes
Understanding the Use of Cohesion Devices and Coherence in Writing
To make sense of the writing, the writer needs to understand the use of cohesion devices and coherence. It is important that writing be coherent as well as cohesive. A text is cohesive if its elements are linked together, and a text is coherent if it makes sense. This paper titled “Understnding the use of Cohesion Devices and Coherence in Writing”. This study is aimed to know and understand the using of cohsion devices and coherence in students‟ writing. To make sense of the writing, the writer needs to understand the use of cohesion devices and coherence. It is important that writing be coherent as well as cohesive. This article discuss the concept of writing, cohesion devices, and coherence. The last, this article describe the importance of understanding the use of cohesion device and coherence in writing
COHESION AND COHERENCE IN ARTICLES ABOUT PTNBH IN UNPAD’S WEBSITE: A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS STUDY
PTNBH (Perguruan Tinggi Negeri Badan Hukum/Corporate University) is an independent
status of universities that have their own authority. Many internal system of universities
are undergoing changes, but these changes provide an opportunity for universities to
improve their quality. Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) inaugurated the change of status to
corporate university (PTNBH) in January 2017. The change was officially marked through
the signing of declaration by the Minister of Research and Technology. The event is written
in an article published in www.unpad.ac.id. The article is considered as important news
relating to the topic and it influences the appeareance of time in website. In article or
discourse, cohesion is the relationship between sentences in a discourse, both grammatically
and lexically. Using good cohesion, a speaker or writer will be able to produce good
discourse. This study will look at (1) how lexical cohesive devices appear in this article and
then see (2) whether the lexical cohesive devices affect the number of readers of the article.
This underlies the selection of research objects that are closely related to the change of
Unpad status to PTNBH. Halliday and Hasan use cohesion to refer to relations of meaning
that define it as a text (1976: 4). The definition is thus a semantic one, and like all the
components of the semantic system, cohesion is realized through grammar and vocabulary.
According to Halliday and Hasan, cohesion can be divided into grammatical and lexical
cohesion. Grammatical cohesion includes devices such as reference, substitution, ellipsis
and conjunction, while lexical cohesion is divided into reiteration (repetition, synonymy
etc.) and collocation (co-occurrence of lexical items). The result of this study will give
recommendation to Unpad website maintainers relating to writing style in news
A study of team cohesion and player satisfaction in two face-to-face games
In this paper we investigate the link between game rules, team cohesion and players’ satisfaction with their teams within face-to-face team-based games. To measure team cohesion, rules from two games were analysed from the perspective of Social Identity Theory in order to form a hypothesis as to which game would be more likely to lead to more cohesive teams, where team cohesion is measured by the extent to which each player identifies with their team. Player satisfaction was measured by looking at three factors: communication within the team, player outcome versus team outcome, and fairness. Significant differences were found in the team cohesion measure suggesting that, as predicted by Social Identity Theory, team cohesion can be fostered by game rules. Team cohesion also correlated positively with player satisfaction. Taken together, this suggests that for games in which team cohesion is an important part, game designers can incorporate game rules in such as a way as to increase the likelihood of both team cohesion and player satisfaction
Staff Engagement for Cohesion
This chapter in a book on small and rural libraries looks at issues around why staff engagement is a concern. We discuss the barriers to staff engagement and the role professional development plays in lowering the barriers. We look at events programming and the library's impact on other campus departments. Concludes with advice to other small academic libraries on developing a staff engagement plan.Ye
Globalism, transformation and social cohesion. Bertelsmann Stiftung Interview 2019
Globalization and the changes it brings pose challenges for
social cohesion. Uncertainty is growing as many people are
concerned about their economic future, social inequality
and growing diversity in societies as a result of global
migration. At the “Trying Times” conference addressing
the issue “Rethinking Social Cohesion” hosted by the
Bertelsmann Stiftung in Berlin from September 4-6 in
2019, thought leaders from around the world convened
to discuss the future of social cohesion. Ian Goldin,
Professor of Globalisation and Development at Oxford
University and Director of the Oxford Martin Programme
on Technological and Economic Change, gave the keynote
speech at the High-Level Round Table kicking off the
conference. In his speech “Globalisation, Transformation
and Social Cohesion,” he discussed the effects of
globalization and its potential in shaping the future. In
the following interview, he explores various aspects of
his argument in further detail and emphasizes the key
pillars of strengthening social cohesion in the future:
demonstrating solidarity with others and rediscovering
our own capacity for action
Explaining the EU's Policy Portfolio: Applying a Federal Integration Approach to EU Cohesion Policy. Bruges Political Research Paper No. 20, December 2011
This paper engages with the debate about why the nature of the EU's policy portfolio is as it is. It does so by taking cohesion policy and asking the question, why has it come to occupy so important a position in the EU‟s policy portfolio? It is argued that the two most common conceptually-based approaches applied to cohesion policy – intergovernmentalism and multilevel governance – do not adequately explain either the timing or the dynamic of cohesion policy. A model that combines economic integration approaches and federal approaches is developed in the paper to provide a basis for a new explanatory framework for the prominent position of cohesion in the portfolio. We suggest that our approach – which we call a federal integration approach – has the potential to be applied to other policy areas
