    Code Switching in Social Media Twitter

    The study deals with the types of code switching and reasons why people switch their language in social media Twitter. The objectives of study are to find out contextual type and the grammatical type of code-switching which is mostly used in social media Twitter and to explain audience's reasons switch the code in social media Twitter. The research conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The primary data collected by tweets from the timelines of Twitter users, the secondary data were the questionnaires to collect information about audiences's reason switch the code on Twitter. The result showed that the dominant type of grammatical types that used by the user is Inter sentential code switching, then it is followed by tag code switching type and intra sentential code switching. The dominant type of contextual types that used by the user is metaphorical code switching and it is followed by situational code switching. There are eight reasons why people switch the code in the social media Twitter, the most common reasons for people switch the languange is due to the lack of equivalent lexicon in the languanges.     AN ANALYSIS ON CODE-SWITCHING USED BY PRESENTERS OF “MTV WHAT`S UP” ENTERTAINMENT NEWS PROGRAMON GLOBAL TV

    Code switching is a bilingual communication strategy consisting of the alternative use of two languages in the same utterance. The main objective of this study is an analysis on code switching used by presenters of MTV WHAT`S UP entertainment news program on GLOBAL TV. They always use Indonesian-English code switching during broadcasting. This study was aimed at getting answer of the research problem, namely (1) What are code-switching that are used by presenters of MTV WHAT'S UP entertainment news program on Global TV? And (2) How does code-switching influence to audience languages? This study is descriptive qualitative methods because, the data do not have any the statistically procedure like those found in the quantitative research. And related to the problem of how to describe what goes on linguistic level when presenters of MTV WHAT`S UP entertainment news program produce code switching on air. The research was conducted on the date of 2, 4,6and 9of August 2004. To collect the data the writer recorded the utterances of the presenters when they are on air, then transcribed them from cassette, and identifies them based on their form. The data analysis is the code-switching used by presenters and how code-switching influence audiences’ language. The presenters often use code-switching while they are performing on TV and based on the functions they use regulatory, interpersonal, personal, imaginative, representational, and ideational function in their conversation. The code- switching influence to audiences’ language which have close relationship with conversational function that used by presenters. The conversational functions are direct quotation, addressee specification, interjections, message qualification, personalization and objectification, and facility of expression

    CODE-SWITCHING AND CODE-MIXING ON PERSUASION IN INDONESIAN TELEVISION ADVERTISEMENTS

    Bilingualism and multilingualism have been a popular topic to discuss recently. Two the examples of the phenomenon are code-switching and code-mixing. This research is aimed to describe the usage of code-switching and code-mixing in Indonesian television advertisements. Further, it also investigates the factors affecting the code-switching and code-mixing in the area. The research used descriptive qualitative method. The data collection was done by recording television advertisements focusing on English-Indonesian advertisements taking place from 6 May until 14 May 2017. The techniques of analyzing data were the interactive analysis that consisted of four steps, namely data collection, data reduction, data analysis, and verification or drawing the conclusion. The result of the study showed that there were 80 data consisting of 42 code-switching and 38 code-mixing. From the data, inter-sentential code-switching and intra-lexical mixing were commonly used in the advertisements. The most products using code-switching and code-mixing were from cosmetics, medicines, and hygiene stuff group. The factors affecting the usage of codeswitching and code-mixing were language facility, language economy, euphemism/communication distance, stylistic purposes in communication, and expression of multiple identities. The study concludes that code-switching and code-mixing are highly used in Indonesian television advertisements. It shows that bilingualism and multilingualism have been accepted in Indonesian people’s daily lives

    A Study of Code-switching Used by an English Teacher in Teenagers\u27 Efl Class

    This study is aimed to analyze the types of code-switching used by the teacher and under what circumstances the switching occur to identify its function. Using qualitative approach, the writer did this study based on code-switching theory of Wardhaugh (2006) and classroom interaction of Walsh (2011). The findings revealed that the teacher used both types of code-switching, intra-sentential and inter-sentential switching. The function of the code-switching identified through the four features of classroom interaction were control of interaction to control the participation, content, procedure of the lesson; speech modification to clarify meaning, to ensure the students\u27 understanding; elicitation technique to elicit response for checking comprehension; repair to correct error directly or get the students to correct the errors. From this study, it could be concluded that the teacher used code-switching to make the learning process clearer, so the students would not get confused and would not have misunderstanding in the classroom

    Code Switching in Classroom Discourse: a Sociolinguistic Study

    This research attempts to find out the most frequently used type and the function of codeswitching, also the implication of code-switching towards the teaching and learning situation in two classrooms of the fourth semester at English Education Department, University of Mataram. The descriptive qualitative method was adopted in conducting this method. The data collection was done through observation, recording and interview. The results of this study showed that three are types of code-switching are found in 129 utterances which contain code-switching in the classrooms. The most frequently used type was Intra-sentential switching, which appeared in 70,5% of the utterances, followed by tag switching (16,2%) and inter-sentential switching (13,1%). There were two functions of code-switching found in this study, they ware translation and communicative function which included motivating, giving feedback, checking comprehension, joking, and expressing state of mind. The implication of code-switching in teaching and learning situation was considered as one of the good strategies to built an efficient and conducive teaching and learning situation in the classrooms, as it is necessary in certain condition and still hard to avoid since it is helpful for material explanation as well as an ice breaker

    Afghan EFL Lecturers’ Perceptions of Code-Switching

    Code-switching is explained as switching between two languages at the same time while conversing in the same discourse. The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of Afghan EFL lecturers toward code- switching. This study used a qualitative research approach in which the data was collected via semi-structured interviews with five EFL lecturers. The lecturers were interviewed to explore their perceptions and reasons for code-switching, and the extent to which they practice code-switching in their classrooms. The results revealed that the lecturers in the study had positive perceptions of code-switching and believed it as a beneficial strategy in facilitating the learning process. However, they also conveyed that an excessive practice of code-switching should be avoided. The study results also disclosed that the lecturers practiced code-switching for various functions such as explaining difficult concepts (translation), explaining complex grammatical points, clarifications, and giving instructions. Finally, the paper provides recommendation for further research
