Closed-form waiting time approximations for polling systems
A typical polling system consists of a number of queues, attended by a single server in a fixed order. The present study derives closed-form approximations for the mean waiting times and mean marginal queue lengths of polling systems with renewal arrival processes, which can be computed by simple calculations. The results of the present research may be very suitable for the design and optimisation phase in many application areas, such as telecommunication, maintenance, manufacturing and transportation

Heavy traffic analysis of a polling model with retrials and glue periods
We present a heavy traffic analysis of a single-server polling model, with
the special features of retrials and glue periods. The combination of these
features in a polling model typically occurs in certain optical networking
models, and in models where customers have a reservation period just before
their service period. Just before the server arrives at a station there is some
deterministic glue period. Customers (both new arrivals and retrials) arriving
at the station during this glue period will be served during the visit of the
server. Customers arriving in any other period leave immediately and will retry
after an exponentially distributed time. As this model defies a closed-form
expression for the queue length distributions, our main focus is on their
heavy-traffic asymptotics, both at embedded time points (beginnings of glue
periods, visit periods and switch periods) and at arbitrary time points. We
obtain closed-form expressions for the limiting scaled joint queue length
distribution in heavy traffic and use these to accurately approximate the mean
number of customers in the system under different loads.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figure
A survey on performance analysis of warehouse carousel systems
This paper gives an overview of recent research on the performance evaluation and design of carousel systems. We discuss picking strategies for problems involving one carousel, consider the throughput of the system for problems involving two carousels, give an overview of related problems in this area, and present an extensive literature review. Emphasis has been given on future research directions in this area
Analysis of a queuing model for slotted ring networks
We study a multi-server multi-queue system which is intended to model a local area network with slotted ring protocol. Two special cases of the model are analysed and the results are used to motivate an approach to approximate mean queue lengths in the general model
