    Speaker Identification Based On Discriminative Vector Quantization And Data Fusion

    Speaker Identification (SI) approaches based on discriminative Vector Quantization (VQ) and data fusion techniques are presented in this dissertation. The SI approaches based on Discriminative VQ (DVQ) proposed in this dissertation are the DVQ for SI (DVQSI), the DVQSI with Unique speech feature vector space segmentation for each speaker pair (DVQSI-U), and the Adaptive DVQSI (ADVQSI) methods. The difference of the probability distributions of the speech feature vector sets from various speakers (or speaker groups) is called the interspeaker variation between speakers (or speaker groups). The interspeaker variation is the measure of template differences between speakers (or speaker groups). All DVQ based techniques presented in this contribution take advantage of the interspeaker variation, which are not exploited in the previous proposed techniques by others that employ traditional VQ for SI (VQSI). All DVQ based techniques have two modes, the training mode and the testing mode. In the training mode, the speech feature vector space is first divided into a number of subspaces based on the interspeaker variations. Then, a discriminative weight is calculated for each subspace of each speaker or speaker pair in the SI group based on the interspeaker variation. The subspaces with higher interspeaker variations play more important roles in SI than the ones with lower interspeaker variations by assigning larger discriminative weights. In the testing mode, discriminative weighted average VQ distortions instead of equally weighted average VQ distortions are used to make the SI decision. The DVQ based techniques lead to higher SI accuracies than VQSI. DVQSI and DVQSI-U techniques consider the interspeaker variation for each speaker pair in the SI group. In DVQSI, speech feature vector space segmentations for all the speaker pairs are exactly the same. However, each speaker pair of DVQSI-U is treated individually in the speech feature vector space segmentation. In both DVQSI and DVQSI-U, the discriminative weights for each speaker pair are calculated by trial and error. The SI accuracies of DVQSI-U are higher than those of DVQSI at the price of much higher computational burden. ADVQSI explores the interspeaker variation between each speaker and all speakers in the SI group. In contrast with DVQSI and DVQSI-U, in ADVQSI, the feature vector space segmentation is for each speaker instead of each speaker pair based on the interspeaker variation between each speaker and all the speakers in the SI group. Also, adaptive techniques are used in the discriminative weights computation for each speaker in ADVQSI. The SI accuracies employing ADVQSI and DVQSI-U are comparable. However, the computational complexity of ADVQSI is much less than that of DVQSI-U. Also, a novel algorithm to convert the raw distortion outputs of template-based SI classifiers into compatible probability measures is proposed in this dissertation. After this conversion, data fusion techniques at the measurement level can be applied to SI. In the proposed technique, stochastic models of the distortion outputs are estimated. Then, the posteriori probabilities of the unknown utterance belonging to each speaker are calculated. Compatible probability measures are assigned based on the posteriori probabilities. The proposed technique leads to better SI performance at the measurement level than existing approaches

    Toward on-demand deep brain stimulation using online Parkinson’s disease prediction driven by dynamic detection

    In Parkinson’s disease (PD), on-demand deep brain stimulation (DBS) is required so that stimulation is regulated to reduce side effects resulting from continuous stimulation and PD exacerbation due to untimely stimulation. Also, the progressive nature of PD necessitates the use of dynamic detection schemes that can track the nonlinearities in PD. This paper proposes the use of dynamic feature extraction feature extraction and dynamic pattern classification to achieve dynamic PD detection taking into account the demand for high accuracy, low computation and real-time detection. The dynamic feature extraction and dynamic pattern classification are selected by evaluating a subset of feature extraction, dimensionality reduction and classification algorithms that have been used in brain machine interfaces. A novel dimensionality reduction technique, the maximum ratio method (MRM) is proposed, which provides the most efficient performance. In terms of accuracy and complexity for hardware implementation, a combination having discrete wavelet transform for feature extraction, MRM for dimensionality reduction and dynamic k-nearest neighbor for classification was chosen as the most efficient. It achieves mean accuracy measures of classification accuracy 99.29%, F1-score of 97.90% and a choice probability of 99.86%

    REGION-BASED ADAPTIVE DISTRIBUTED VIDEO CODING CODEC

    The recently developed Distributed Video Coding (DVC) is typically suitable for the applications where the conventional video coding is not feasible because of its inherent high-complexity encoding. Examples include video surveillance usmg wireless/wired video sensor network and applications using mobile cameras etc. With DVC, the complexity is shifted from the encoder to the decoder. The practical application of DVC is referred to as Wyner-Ziv video coding (WZ) where an estimate of the original frame called "side information" is generated using motion compensation at the decoder. The compression is achieved by sending only that extra information that is needed to correct this estimation. An error-correcting code is used with the assumption that the estimate is a noisy version of the original frame and the rate needed is certain amount of the parity bits. The side information is assumed to have become available at the decoder through a virtual channel. Due to the limitation of compensation method, the predicted frame, or the side information, is expected to have varying degrees of success. These limitations stem from locationspecific non-stationary estimation noise. In order to avoid these, the conventional video coders, like MPEG, make use of frame partitioning to allocate optimum coder for each partition and hence achieve better rate-distortion performance. The same, however, has not been used in DVC as it increases the encoder complexity. This work proposes partitioning the considered frame into many coding units (region) where each unit is encoded differently. This partitioning is, however, done at the decoder while generating the side-information and the region map is sent over to encoder at very little rate penalty. The partitioning allows allocation of appropriate DVC coding parameters (virtual channel, rate, and quantizer) to each region. The resulting regions map is compressed by employing quadtree algorithm and communicated to the encoder via the feedback channel. The rate control in DVC is performed by channel coding techniques (turbo codes, LDPC, etc.). The performance of the channel code depends heavily on the accuracy of virtual channel model that models estimation error for each region. In this work, a turbo code has been used and an adaptive WZ DVC is designed both in transform domain and in pixel domain. The transform domain WZ video coding (TDWZ) has distinct superior performance as compared to the normal Pixel Domain Wyner-Ziv (PDWZ), since it exploits the ' spatial redundancy during the encoding. The performance evaluations show that the proposed system is superior to the existing distributed video coding solutions. Although the, proposed system requires extra bits representing the "regions map" to be transmitted, fuut still the rate gain is noticeable and it outperforms the state-of-the-art frame based DVC by 0.6-1.9 dB. The feedback channel (FC) has the role to adapt the bit rate to the changing ' statistics between the side infonmation and the frame to be encoded. In the unidirectional scenario, the encoder must perform the rate control. To correctly estimate the rate, the encoder must calculate typical side information. However, the rate cannot be exactly calculated at the encoder, instead it can only be estimated. This work also prbposes a feedback-free region-based adaptive DVC solution in pixel domain based on machine learning approach to estimate the side information. Although the performance evaluations show rate-penalty but it is acceptable considering the simplicity of the proposed algorithm. vii

    Representation Learning with Adversarial Latent Autoencoders

    A large number of deep learning methods applied to computer vision problems require encoder-decoder maps. These methods include, but are not limited to, self-representation learning, generalization, few-shot learning, and novelty detection. Encoder-decoder maps are also useful for photo manipulation, photo editing, superresolution, etc. Encoder-decoder maps are typically learned using autoencoder networks.Traditionally, autoencoder reciprocity is achieved in the image-space using pixel-wisesimilarity loss, which has a widely known flaw of producing non-realistic reconstructions. This flaw is typical for the Variational Autoencoder (VAE) family and is not only limited to pixel-wise similarity losses, but is common to all methods relying upon the explicit maximum likelihood training paradigm, as opposed to an implicit one. Likelihood maximization, coupled with poor decoder distribution leads to poor or blurry reconstructions at best. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) on the other hand, perform an implicit maximization of the likelihood by solving a minimax game, thus bypassing the issues derived from the explicit maximization. This provides GAN architectures with remarkable generative power, enabling the generation of high-resolution images of humans, which are indistinguishable from real photos to the naked eye. However, GAN architectures lack inference capabilities, which makes them unsuitable for training encoder-decoder maps, effectively limiting their application space.We introduce an autoencoder architecture that (a) is free from the consequences ofmaximizing the likelihood directly, (b) produces reconstructions competitive in quality with state-of-the-art GAN architectures, and (c) allows learning disentangled representations, which makes it useful in a variety of problems. We show that the proposed architecture and training paradigm significantly improves the state-of-the-art in novelty and anomaly detection methods, it enables novel kinds of image manipulations, and has significant potential for other applications

    Interoperability of fingerprint sensors and matching algorithms

    Biometric systems are widely deployed in governmental, military and commercial/civilian applications. There are a multitude of sensors and matching algorithms available from different vendors. This creates a competitive market for these products, which is good for the consumers but emphasizes the importance of interoperability. In fingerprint recognition, interoperability is the ability of a system to work with a diverse set of fingerprint devices. Variations induced by fingerprint sensors include image resolution, scanning area, gray levels, etc. Such variations can impact the quality of the extracted features, and cross-device matching performance. This is true even when dealing with fingerprint sensors of the same sensing technology. In this thesis, we perform a large-scale empirical study of the status of interoperability between fingerprint sensors and assess the performance consequence when interoperability is lacking. Additionally we develop a method to increase interoperability in fingerprint-based recognition systems deploying optical fingerprint sensors. A set of features to measure differences in fingerprint acquisition is designed and evaluated. Finally, different fusion schemes based on machine learning are tested end evaluated in order to exploit the designed set of features. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is able to reduce cross-device match error rates by a significant margin

    Apprentissage automatique pour le codage cognitif de la parole

    Depuis les années 80, les codecs vocaux reposent sur des stratégies de codage à court terme qui fonctionnent au niveau de la sous-trame ou de la trame (généralement 5 à 20 ms). Les chercheurs ont essentiellement ajusté et combiné un nombre limité de technologies disponibles (transformation, prédiction linéaire, quantification) et de stratégies (suivi de forme d'onde, mise en forme du bruit) pour construire des architectures de codage de plus en plus complexes. Dans cette thèse, plutôt que de s'appuyer sur des stratégies de codage à court terme, nous développons un cadre alternatif pour la compression de la parole en codant les attributs de la parole qui sont des caractéristiques perceptuellement importantes des signaux vocaux. Afin d'atteindre cet objectif, nous résolvons trois problèmes de complexité croissante, à savoir la classification, la prédiction et l'apprentissage des représentations. La classification est un élément courant dans les conceptions de codecs modernes. Dans un premier temps, nous concevons un classifieur pour identifier les émotions, qui sont parmi les attributs à long terme les plus complexes de la parole. Dans une deuxième étape, nous concevons un prédicteur d'échantillon de parole, qui est un autre élément commun dans les conceptions de codecs modernes, pour mettre en évidence les avantages du traitement du signal de parole à long terme et non linéaire. Ensuite, nous explorons les variables latentes, un espace de représentations de la parole, pour coder les attributs de la parole à court et à long terme. Enfin, nous proposons un réseau décodeur pour synthétiser les signaux de parole à partir de ces représentations, ce qui constitue notre dernière étape vers la construction d'une méthode complète de compression de la parole basée sur l'apprentissage automatique de bout en bout. Bien que chaque étape de développement proposée dans cette thèse puisse faire partie d'un codec à elle seule, chaque étape fournit également des informations et une base pour la prochaine étape de développement jusqu'à ce qu'un codec entièrement basé sur l'apprentissage automatique soit atteint. Les deux premières étapes, la classification et la prédiction, fournissent de nouveaux outils qui pourraient remplacer et améliorer des éléments des codecs existants. Dans la première étape, nous utilisons une combinaison de modèle source-filtre et de machine à état liquide (LSM), pour démontrer que les caractéristiques liées aux émotions peuvent être facilement extraites et classées à l'aide d'un simple classificateur. Dans la deuxième étape, un seul réseau de bout en bout utilisant une longue mémoire à court terme (LSTM) est utilisé pour produire des trames vocales avec une qualité subjective élevée pour les applications de masquage de perte de paquets (PLC). Dans les dernières étapes, nous nous appuyons sur les résultats des étapes précédentes pour concevoir un codec entièrement basé sur l'apprentissage automatique. un réseau d'encodage, formulé à l'aide d'un réseau neuronal profond (DNN) et entraîné sur plusieurs bases de données publiques, extrait et encode les représentations de la parole en utilisant la prédiction dans un espace latent. Une approche d'apprentissage non supervisé basée sur plusieurs principes de cognition est proposée pour extraire des représentations à partir de trames de parole courtes et longues en utilisant l'information mutuelle et la perte contrastive. La capacité de ces représentations apprises à capturer divers attributs de la parole à court et à long terme est démontrée. Enfin, une structure de décodage est proposée pour synthétiser des signaux de parole à partir de ces représentations. L'entraînement contradictoire est utilisé comme une approximation des mesures subjectives de la qualité de la parole afin de synthétiser des échantillons de parole à consonance naturelle. La haute qualité perceptuelle de la parole synthétisée ainsi obtenue prouve que les représentations extraites sont efficaces pour préserver toutes sortes d'attributs de la parole et donc qu'une méthode de compression complète est démontrée avec l'approche proposée.Abstract: Since the 80s, speech codecs have relied on short-term coding strategies that operate at the subframe or frame level (typically 5 to 20ms). Researchers essentially adjusted and combined a limited number of available technologies (transform, linear prediction, quantization) and strategies (waveform matching, noise shaping) to build increasingly complex coding architectures. In this thesis, rather than relying on short-term coding strategies, we develop an alternative framework for speech compression by encoding speech attributes that are perceptually important characteristics of speech signals. In order to achieve this objective, we solve three problems of increasing complexity, namely classification, prediction and representation learning. Classification is a common element in modern codec designs. In a first step, we design a classifier to identify emotions, which are among the most complex long-term speech attributes. In a second step, we design a speech sample predictor, which is another common element in modern codec designs, to highlight the benefits of long-term and non-linear speech signal processing. Then, we explore latent variables, a space of speech representations, to encode both short-term and long-term speech attributes. Lastly, we propose a decoder network to synthesize speech signals from these representations, which constitutes our final step towards building a complete, end-to-end machine-learning based speech compression method. The first two steps, classification and prediction, provide new tools that could replace and improve elements of existing codecs. In the first step, we use a combination of source-filter model and liquid state machine (LSM), to demonstrate that features related to emotions can be easily extracted and classified using a simple classifier. In the second step, a single end-to-end network using long short-term memory (LSTM) is shown to produce speech frames with high subjective quality for packet loss concealment (PLC) applications. In the last steps, we build upon the results of previous steps to design a fully machine learning-based codec. An encoder network, formulated using a deep neural network (DNN) and trained on multiple public databases, extracts and encodes speech representations using prediction in a latent space. An unsupervised learning approach based on several principles of cognition is proposed to extract representations from both short and long frames of data using mutual information and contrastive loss. The ability of these learned representations to capture various short- and long-term speech attributes is demonstrated. Finally, a decoder structure is proposed to synthesize speech signals from these representations. Adversarial training is used as an approximation to subjective speech quality measures in order to synthesize natural-sounding speech samples. The high perceptual quality of synthesized speech thus achieved proves that the extracted representations are efficient at preserving all sorts of speech attributes and therefore that a complete compression method is demonstrated with the proposed approach
