Recent movies (e.g., Geronimo, Last of the Mohicans, and Dances with Wolves) have generally shown a sympathetic, if yet still stereotypical view of Native Americans. These cinematic treatments are replete with furious battles, frenetic romances, and the stuff of heroic legends. Hollywood, however, would not know what to do with M. Inez Hilger\u27s Chippewa Child Life and Its\u27 Cultural Background. It is a quiet book, a narrative of the everyday culture of the Chippewa Indians as she observed them on nine Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan reservations between 1932 and 1940

Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Inhabiting Stands of Reed Canary Grass Phalaris Arundinacea on Islands in the Lower Chippewa River, Wisconsin

We used pitfall traps to assess ground beetle diversity (Coleoptera:Carabidae) on two islands in the lower Chippewa River, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, with rapidly expanding populations of reed canary grass, Phalaris arundinaceae. We collected 233 individuals belonging to 17 species over four, 3-9 day sampling periods, May-August 1994. All species have been documented in Wisconsin and most are considered habitat generalists. Agonum fidele, A. extensicolle, Anisodactylus harrisii and Bembidion quadrimaculatum oppositum comprised 70% of all species collected. Seven species were common to both islands, with 13 species collected on Canarygrass Island and 11 species on Ski Jump Island. Carabid species diversity (Shannon’s H=2.01) was greatest on Canarygrass Island

Moth Species New to Michigan

This is a compilation of moth species previously unrecorded from Michigan. Moore\u27s (1955) publication has been critically examined necessitating some specific changes. All questionable material has been determined by present day specialists in their particular fields. The McDunnough (1938) checklist is followed in the arrangement of the new data together with most of the recent changes in nomenclature as presented by Forbes (1948, 1954, 1960), Hardwick (1970), Hodges (1971), and Covell (1970, 1971). With the advent of more sophisticated collecting equipment and the easier access to Michigan\u27s Upper Peninsula a total of 154 species has been added. Many institutional and private collections have been examined including the large collection at Michigan State University which was not considered in the Moore publication

Impact of the Great Recession on Social Assistance Programs in the Eau Claire Area

National data reflects a continuing demand for social assistance programs. This suggests that, despite a modest recovery based on labor market measures such as employment and unemployment rates, there seems to be a continuing need for social assistance. Three new synonymies in \u3ci\u3ePhyllophaga\u3c/i\u3e Harris, 1827 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), with lectotype and neotype designations

In the course of working on new species of North American Phyllophaga Harris, 1827 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) some synonyms have been found and are proposed here. New synonymies: Phyllophaga knausii (Schaeffer, 1907) is synonymized with Phyllophaga sociata (Horn, 1878); Phyllophaga chippewa Saylor, 1939 is synonymized with Phyllophaga rugosa (Melsheimer, 1845); and Phyllophaga falta Sanderson, 1950 is synonymized with Phyllophaga bipartita (Horn, 1887). Lectotypes are here designated for the following species: Listrochelus knausii Schaeffer, Listrochelus sociatus Horn, and Lachnosterna bipartita Horn. A neotype for Ancylonycha rugosa Melsheimer is here designated from the Horn Collection

Employing a broad multi-disciplinary approach which includes history, anthropology, economics, demography, ecology, and political science, Meyer, a U.C.L.A. historian, has created a sensitive and sweeping analysis of the creation and metamorphosis of the Anishinaabeg ( Chippewa or Ojibwe”) who eventually located in contemporary Minnesota on the White Earth Reservation. Eschewing stereotypes of Indians as mere victims of Euro-American history, Meyer shows how the Anishinaabeg -- themselves internally heterogeneous -- transform, adapt, innovate and respond according to their own interests and to changes around them
